Did a vet ever tell you why her joints don't support her properly while asleep? My horse is falling like this every morning and has actually broken some of the boards in her stall. I'm afraid she's going to hurt herself......
@jesss227 He just said she might be too sacred to lie down after some bad experance where she couldn`t get up again and is just too tired to sleep standing up
This is really frustrating... NARCOLEPSY IN HORSES IN VERY RARE... THIS HORSE HAS SLEEP DEPRIVATION... please google" Dr. Joe Bertone DVM sleep deprivation" one of the first links that come us is called "Sleep deprivation is NOT narcolpesy in horses" is an article by Dr. Bertone who is leading research on this topic.
Your horse has narcolepsy, like mine. Mine has actually fallen over. If you have her tied up, and she starts doing that, walk her around in a few large circles, until she's woken up.

True narcolepsy itself is very rare. Please google Dr. Joe Bertone DVM . He has extensivley studies horses with sleep disorders/sleep deprivation. There is a lot of misinformation in the comments here.
i wouldnt worry about it too much unless she is actually falling over and really doing damage, but i would watch her.
my horse has narcolepsy and its a real bummer during showmanship since she falls asleep so easy and stumbles quite a bit. and when riding, you just have to be careful to just keep moving or if you have to stand quiet just make sure she doesnt fall asleep. but dont worry she cant fall asleep when she is being worked.
i found with my mare, that she never laid down to sleep either
@TroublesWorld All horses will lay down to sleep at some point, they need to in order to get REM sleep; which is just as important for them as it is for humans. I may be the only one, but this looks more like a horse that is trying to sleep standing up (As most if not all horses will), but can't get the 'lock' on it's legs and as such stumbles when it tries napping?

@loveanimalsforever Boiling hot in the spring/summer, freezing in the autumn/winter, poor for hygiene, and during the colder nights when your horse is hot but the metal is cold, it's going to cause a lot of condensation and as such, humidity, resulting in respiratory issues.
@Experiment641 Alright i see your point of view and thanks but she doesn`t use that shed anymore but has a wooden one now though she doesn`t use it alot haha
@wrangler7203 alright thanks,,dont worry her field is right beside my house so there is always people going about so would see her but its never happened before--thanks for your concern though
@wrangler7203 my best friends welsh cob suffered fm Narcolepsy. But he's no longer with us, sadly he passed away this year juz b4 Summer. He died at the grand age ov 30 + so he woz well into his late 30's x He woz a LEGEND && will be sorely missed xx
If a horses collapses at rest, it is often because there is a problem within the nervous system. If the brain is not sending the right messages, the body can't respond and will tend to topple over.
Narcolepsy is one such syndrome. This is a rare, incurable sleep disorder of the central nervous system characterised by uncontrolled episodes of loss of muscle tone (cataplexy) and sleep.
Hey nah dont worry,i understand your concern--the shed stops her from totally falling and she does it constant from night to day so i cant help her all the time but i do try and wake her up and the vet said i hould walk her around and i try but its hard--thanks for asking anyway
shes cute but i suggest you have a vet look at her leg:) i know all horses and ponys got some kind of lock thing in their legs that they can some how lock so they can stand up asleep.
In my stable, there is also one mare, who is scared of lying down, so she sleeps also standing up. She is now 17 years old, but at the age of 4 she came to our riding school, so she never really had someone she could trust..-
hello everyone-thanks for everyone who was corcerned about my pony i spoke to vet at a talk and now know whats wrong with her-it isnt that bad thanks tho
my 27 year old mare does this as well. she does it because she's arthritic and doesn't lay down often. She falls asleep standing up and has fallen over 3x's. It's not narcolepsy...only dozes off when it's quiet....not in the middle of activity
you might need to conact your vet. a horse might be getting epm. that is one of the signs. horses rarely fall when sleeping. your pony is probably lacking balance.
That is usually a sign that she is not getting enough rem sleep because she does not want to lie down to sleep. Does she have hock issues? or is she kept alone? That can make them too nervous to lie down...
this is actually a disease called sleep apniea (sorry bout spelling) my friends horse had it it can be dangorous cause the horse may fall and hurt itself so be careful....

you know, a metal shed isnt really the best thing for a horse, even if they can come and go as they like.....

YES IT IS Narcolepsy/cataplexy. There is no cure. But you do have to make sure that horse can`t get casted on that lean wall :-(

@wrangler7203 no, it's NOT narcolepsy. If this horse had it, it would fall asleep/collapse even while being ridden. That is not the case here.

Horses have things in their legs to prevent themv from falling, it allows them to stand on 3 legs with using less energy.
If shes falling, i would think stifle injury, or something.
LillysEclipse 3 years ago
I know 2 horses that do that. Its so cute and kinda strange.
