Yes, you can do that, but it's not really necessary. Your macro mode is really just an automatic setting to tell your camera to keep the focal point very close to the front view, in the foreground. I'd day you'd get better results with a manual setting and a macro lens separately, that way you can control the depth of field yourself, instead of the camera dictating it to you. Well done and thanks for a great question.
i do all my product photogaphy in my tortoises vivarium which is lighted by a uv bulb all i do is lay the flower or object on a piece of paper and stick the camera to macro mode :)
Another thing you can do is try your flower shot in black and white and then shoot with a red or orange filter on, it will make for some interesting tone. If you don't have a filter, try some coloured cellophane and a rubber band over your lens. A bit basic I know, but good if you are just starting out.
Don't forget to put your camera setting on macro. This "tells" the camera to focus up close. That way, you'll get a closer depth of feild and your flower will be more sharp.
Sure, I think you should experiment and get creative. You can do some good things with changing your depth of field if you have an SLR but that's another tutorial for another time! Thanks for your interest. Happy shooting.

Just for the record- you can put your camera on macro mode if you don't have a manual setting. Just to clear up any confusion about what I say.
