Your both right and wrong. Yes this song is pre christian and its also written by an english man who heard the song thought he liked it and so weote words for the music that didnt at all resemble the previous song. When he wrote the version that you just listened to christianity was everywhere and no christians didnt steal christmas. They were told that jesus was born on 25 december and believed it the pagans celebrated over their event for over a week and it starts midway through the month
@yomama56789 im not sure you read wikipedia correctly but this song definately isnt pre-christian. the english language they are being sung in isn't that old. the tune was written in the ukraine before the introduction of christianity to that country, however some of the other things you said are true. Nice try, though.

@FireEmblemMaster28 I'm an atheist and I love this song and this version of it. And I call it xmas...or as I like to say, taking the christ out or christmas.
@WedgeOfSpite Non believers say religion isn't fair to them because it's everywhere, but then they petition to have Christ removed from everything and forcing believers out of the freedom of religion. On top of that they try to take Christ out of Christmas, which is a religious holiday celebrating Jesus' birth. If you don't believe then why do you celebrate Christmas or Easter? All of that seems pretty hypocritical. lol Believe what you want, but don't take away our right to religion.
@luckybear3822 im not an athiest, but it's starting to become more known that Christmas is of pagan origins. There's norse, roman, goth (not emoish goth, but like visigoth), and catholic influence. So it's everyones holiday.
@ozzman628 Well I am Christian and Christmas is not a pagan holiday it is a religous holiday celebrating the birth of Christ. If your religion follows the story of Christ' birth then it's your holiday. People become hypocrites when they say there is no God and then turn around and celebrate Christmas, which is the celebration of Christ' birth. Doesn't make any sense to me.
@luckybear3822 historically the chrisitans took the holiday from another religion/pagans look it up! ^^ Every heard of Yule logs or yuletime carols? In a few countries the holiday is still refferred to as yule rather than christmas.
@Idiomatick Yule means period extending from Dec. 24 to Jan. 6. Many different religions celebrate holidays during this time, and have adopted terms like yule, from paganism, in their holiday celebration but they did not take the holiday itself from pagans. Christmas celebrates an event which happened 2000 years ago. Yule celebrates an annually recurring event, the rebirth of the sun. I suggest that you actually read the article closer.
@luckybear3822 Christmas of today is an amalgam. Chistmas until very recently (less than 100 years) referred to Christmastide which is the time period you gave. Jesus' birth is christian though it is debatable whether or not the date was chosen to align with past pagan celebrations or not. Much of the traditional foods are from pagan tradition. Christmas trees come from guild celebrations in Latvia. The presents/Santa come from the Dutch traditional sinterklass.
@Idiomatick Yes but the holiday called "CHRISTmas" is a celebration of Jesus CHRIST' birth and nothing else. Whether they adopted terms, food, or symbols it doesn't change the meaning of Christmas itself.
@luckybear3822 Think of it this way, the Christians adopted terms, food, and symbols. Everyone else adopted the name. There is room enough for us all on such a grand celebration. :)
@luckybear3822 The red and white jolly Santa was an invention of Coca-cola corporation. Christmas cards are a corporate invention as well. Mistletoe is a a scandinavian tradition only a few hundred years old! So really christmas belongs to everyone these days. It is made up from all parts of the world. And each year traditions will grow and shift. Asia and the middle east will be adding their own traditions which may spread and add to the winter solstice celebration. It is really a joyous event~
Hi. I agree but don't you think that celebrating Christmas today has little to do with God or Jesus? I think that Christmas is more and more a comercial issue. In this circumstance, I don't see the problem to celebrate Christmas even if you don't believe in God, precisely because it has become mainly a comercial celebration. To ironize gently, I use to say "Have a Good Winter Solstice" instead of "Have a Merry Christmas" because of its true origin: the celebration of the rebirth of the nature.
@HimuraOro No I think people these days have to suck God out of everything because they don't think it's fair to them since they don't believe yet they are taking away others freedom of religion and their rights. Believe what you want, but I am saying that Christmas has terms and some pagan things but the church made the holiday Christmas, which most people celebrate, as a celebration of Christ' birth. Yule is the celebration of the rebirth of the sun. 2 very different celebrations.
@luckybear3822 You say 2 very different celebrations, I say 2 very similar celebrations, the celebrations of the rebirth of the sun preceding by far the celebration of Christ's birth (commonly accepted that Christ's birth was institutionalised by Liberio in 354). The Church smartly used the first ones to its benefits, in the same way as the figure of Christ is based on the myth of Mithra. Christmas is a celebration like any other. Why only Christians could celebrate snow, winter time and family?
@HimuraOro I never said that only Christians should celebrate Christmas. It just has been more recognised as a christian holiday than anything else so I said that it was hypocritical of people to diss christians then celebrate a christian tradition. I doesn't matter to me were christians got certain traditions from. It still doen't take away what christmas means to christians, which is a celebration of Christ' birth. Believe what you want I don't care.
@luckybear3822 If you follow history it is apparent that Jesus wasn't born on dec. 25th and coincidentally the rebirth of the son god Saturn is on dec. 25th. Every ritual Christian's observe for Christmas was created long before Christ was born. If you choose to do pagan rituals in lieu of doing biblical rituals then so be it. I lke Roman history and celebrate Christmas the way intended (minus the orgies). Also, it might even be against a commandment (worship false idols.)
@ozzman628 Well everyone is going to have their own opinions I am happy to learn new things and I have by these conversations. I love discussing things cause I usually walk away with new information. I already new that it was apparent that Christ wasn't born on Dec. 25th. I still stand by Christmas as a religious holiday as well as a holiday for everyone it's all at how you observe it.

@luckybear3822 We don't try to take Christ out of Christmas, because he never belonged there to begin with. Christmas was a winter holiday for pagan religions for thousands of years before a certain pope decided to name it for Christ, to make it easier for pagans to convert. Jesus was born in the summer anyway, so he can just leave my winter alooone.
@TheMuffinBurgler you think of a different holiday, similar to Hanukkah, that lasted close to a week, that was pagan. jesus was found in the summer, but born in the winter. he was close to three years old before the wise men from the east found him. get your facts straight.

Just wanted to share a fond memory with you all. Every time my older sister baby sat us we would watch these films or the Wayne's World films and have a mini party in the dark with Pringles, mini oranges, sweets etc. Very happy memories :D
