I interpret it as a representation of human lives, we get to spend a short time on this planet and after that we are dead and "washed away". However, that doesn't mean we can't create something beautiful in the mean time and after we are gone, people can use the same "canvas" and create something beautiful as well. People find it intriguing because it means something different for everybody
