The beginning was definatly untrue. The South felt their rights and way of life was threatened, and felt Lincoln would continue to derail them, so when Lincoln was elected, they seceded. Only 6% of Confederate citizens owned slaves. Lee renounced slavery early into the war. Stonewall Jackson completly hated slavery. It was pride and defense. Now, slavery is wrong, but to tag the whole South as "racists rebels" is untrue.

The south was using all the men it could. Independence from Lincoln and his "one people indivisible" ideology was the south's goal. The south believed that each state was a nation like the founding fathers and anti-federalists. It was a cultural and ideological clash.
