I like this song, but I am going to have to agree with my friend (who hates it): this sounds generic, like something that would be on a National Geographic underwater special.
In my opinion, it is very much similar to some generic music, just much better. If all National Geographic generic music was as good as this, I would totally listen to it, but it doesn't.
On another note, Fridge is probably the least genre-oriented band I have ever heard. They have normal acoustic stuff, krautrock, insane dissonant random techno, and then stuff like this.
This is really a chicken versus egg argument since a lot of music featured in documentaries weren't originally scored for them or are inspirations of existing works. A lot of folks dislike Mahler and Wagner because they say their music sounds like the stuff you hear in movies. Well, those composers existed before movies even existed, and their works are the source of much emulation among film score composers. It's perfectly reasonable to dislike the song, but the logic behind it isn't.

I don't think it sounds generic at all.
you need to take into account how hard it is to create these kinds of sounds.
I can see what you mean though, but imo, its amazing.
