Amazing!!! How does he come up with stuff like this? Not sure if anyone will be able to replicate this high level of musicianship again in our lifetime. People listen to an incredible amount of mediocraty these days . Please tour again with Lyle!!!! Thank you so much Pat for doing what you do!!
Hipster Radiohead fans who think they know what genius is need to watch and listen to everything by Metheny. They'll quickly realize that dick is what they know.
I'd become rather obsessed with learning Lyle's "horn section" during the marimba breakdown. It wasn't until I bought the Pat Metheny songbook and saw the music that I finally realized what was going on. Lyle is a very underrated writer and everyone should buy his albums if you can find em.
@boiledrootbeer - He uses it between tunes to keep that white smile - no really he put it on the guitar to help with the strap which broke one night in the early days of PMG. He played great that night and kept it there - as you can hear it works.

@boiledrootbeer If that is actually a toothbrush on the bridge, it's likely to be because he had one on his old Gibson, which he put there to hold the bridge when it broke. If I had to guess I'd suggest that he has it there because of how it holds his cable in place. However he has MIDI pickups on his guitars; it could be something to do with that.
How do they get the 'horn sounding riff around 5:00' It looks like Lyle is on his piano and not on any synth keyboards - it that the midi piano. Or does Pat trigger it or is it hidden with the player on the back right? Great song thanks for posting
@dlangegoogle It's most likely Lyle's MIDI piano - He's been using it for years to play parts that require simultaneous piano and synthesizer. His solo with organ and piano on Every Summer Night is another example.
After 26 years of listening to this brilliant musician and his group, I will finally see them live in two weeks. I'm AMPED. It will be awesome if they play this.
I've seen Pat a dozen times at least and this tour was the best. Paul Wertico uses all those cymbals and is great. Check out the version of this song with the orchestra....one of the best performances ever.
this song kicks ass, all guitar players should aspire to play like pat metheny, I'm starting out jazz theory lessons because he is such an inspiration
This was recorded at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California on a beautiful, gorgeous summer night. I was there, and you can see me in row #3 during some of the songs from this DVD. It was sooooooo excellent. (For those who don't know, the Mountain Winery used to be called Paul Masson Mountain Winery. I don't think they make wine there any more---it's just for concerts, weddings, etc).
i just can't acknowledge the fact he is so damn amazing. the best thing about his music is that is a pure wisdom so easy to "read". cheers, and thanks a lot4uploading
Pat will go down in history as one of the jazz greats, right there with Miles, Coltrane, Jim Hall, Wes montgomery, Ray Brown...etc I've bought every album He's put out, and play them over and over again.
I completely ruined my cd of "still life talking", played iit so much. Full blast while driving. Saw them live in 2005 at the Warner Theatre in Torrington CT. They did the whole "The Way Up". Beautiful, serene, goose bumps all over my body, the whole show. Love them to death.
@kdd3051 Man you love the music just as much as I do, maybe even more.. It's useless to say 'have fun listening' to you, because you will, if i want you to or not :)
@4difference Thank you very much for your kinds words. It's so nice to get a reply like yours. When my youngest son was in college getting his Bachelor in Music/Jazz performance the jazz orchestra he was in played Metheny's "Have you Heard and I was instantly hooked. I mean that....instantly. My son plays the upright bass & electric. Plays jazz, rock, just about everything except country. Thanks again.
@kdd3051 You know what, we are actually commenting on a PM recording that hits me instantly each time. Look at the start, no count off, they all start at the same time. I'ts amazing!
@kdd3051 Haha. Been there. I had to burn another copy, I played Still Life so much. It's my first and favorite PMG CD. Did you happen to pick up the re-master? I think it sounds very nice.

When I first listened repetitively to this song a decade ago in my home everyday, even my grandma loved it.
Today, she's 86, and when she hears this same song inside my car, she said "oi!.....this is that same song'!!!!.....and she loves it!
