I think all people need to stop being victims and start being strong men/women. If you're white- quit bitching about the inferior "monkeys" that are ruining your world and just "Man up" like the powerful Aryan-super-men that you are and correct the problem.
Proud Blacks- quit waiting on the white man to "come around", atone for the past or accept you, improve your own life. Help your own people.
i think america has to make views of racial inequality false before cry's for equality will be silenced. its only common sense. you you want a man to not to tell you to stop hitting him the first step is to stop hitting him.
The public curriculum stinks. It give history from a very Euro-centric point of view and then throws in a bunch of white guilt nonsense; although, slavery and segregation were VERY important parts of American history.
These are great vids. I mean, I feel uncomfortable around many African-Canadians because of tensions, and I'm not white. I don't like that. I crack racial jokes constantly with my white and brown parents, but I couldn't in front of certain colours of people because of grudges.
Blacks didn't inherit the benefits but we did inherit the deficits: our elders were not allowed to go to school, no generational wealth, no land, etc. You want peace today. You want everyone to be happy. But, isn't that convenient for you to say that while you (perhaps not you specifically but your ilk) benefit from our blood and death? I'm not complaining. but, doens't it make it easy for you to have this world view as long as your race holds all the gold and land?
@norcalnupe Thanks for writing! Yes, I do enjoy a pretty comfortable existence. I also recognize that white people really do seem to run the world. The point I'm trying to make in this movie is that white people run the world because everyone expects them to run the world. That expectation makes whites feel threatened and afraid of everyone else, and because of that fear, there's so little cooperation between the races and so much segregation today.
Whites run the world because everyone else EXPECTS them to? So, they were looking for a white savior to come along and save them? Rather, I think whites rule the world because they had guns when others did not and whites forced trade and culture on others. Does that sound reasonable? What nation have whites gone to where they did not bring rule or violence?
@norcalnupe Whoops. Poorly-phrased on my part. People expect white Americans to be tyrannical, and as long as they expect them to be tyrannical, they'll keep being tyrannical.
I don't know what it is about white society that makes it so destructive. Maybe it's the Protestant Ethic, or something. But it's a terrible thing. I'd like to think we can change that.
I do agree with you 100%. I absolutely expect whites to be tyrannical. I expect that from no other race than white people. I'm not a racist against anyone. I could care less about the color of anyones skin. But, from my view, white people created the concept of race. Before whites created race there were not cast systems based on skin tone. So, because the entire world knows whites have a thing about color, we obviously protect ourselves from violence which appears to be imminent or predictable.
@norcalnupe Shelby Steele, a black professor at Stanford, says in his book "White Guilt" that there is so much segregation today not because whites are racist, but because black people use "white guilt" as a method for getting what they want. For example, if a black man and a white man apply for a job, and the white man gets the job, if the black man accuses the employer of being racist suddenly they lose all their business. That's not a great example, but it's the general idea.
I read his book and I don't agree with Shely Steele. I think there is segregation today because it's natural for people (both black and white) to want to live with their own. There is nothing wrong with that. you don't have to hate others just because you prefer to cooperate with your own people. The real question is how you view and treat others. Segregation is natural.
@norcalnupe I digress. Yes, I suppose I benefit from your ancestors' blood and death - everyone in America does, I guess. No, I'm not comfortable with that. It depresses me to no end that there's still segregation in our society, probably as much as there was before the Civil Rights Movement. The thing causing this is white and black people being too afraid or too angry to talk with each other and see that we're all human. Whites are put down, blacks are feared.
Have you ever been to China Town in San Fran? Do people get up in arms about that level of segregation? Have you ever been to Iittle India, Lital Italy, or Korea Town? There are ethnic enclaves all over the United States. However, everyone is so concerned about blacks living by themselves. Why is that? Blacks ALWAYS wanted to live together. We just didn't want to be told by our government that we couldn't live or work with you if we wanted to. We wanted freedom just like anyone else.
@norcalnupe You're absolutely right. Once again, I'm poorly-phrased. Segregation's a natural thing; absolutely, people live with whom they're comfortable. Segregation of blacks and whites, though, more than other races, seems to bring about cultures of crime and concentrations of poverty in black areas.
Blacks live in poverty because we don't have an economy. We don't believe in trade. We don't own merchant stores or small businesses. Our focus is on getting jobs from whites. That is not an economy. That is dependency.
@norcalnupe Blacks produced an economy during slavery and during Reconstruction. Blacks owned shops, stores, and ran community centers in the South until Reconstruction ended and the white redeemers and the Ku Klux Klan, and the federal government organized and destroyed. I hate to say it but I kind of believe blacks would have been better off if they had federal lands set aside for them where they could have had their own separate society.
@norcalnupe I imagine you've read the Autobiography of Malcolm X. I believe he encourages people to live "among their own kind," but because they're comfortable with their own kind, not because they fear the other kind.
I've read that bookk as well. He belives in economic self sufficiency. Why shouldn't he believe in that? Everyone else does. Blacks are the ONLY people in America that do not control an economy of their own. Blacks are a nation of employees that completely depend on whites for jobs. After 1964, we should have stayed in our own communities and built them up so well that some whites would want to work for us, go to our schools, and live in our neighborhoods.
Integration was a one way street. All the blacks leaving the black community and coming into the white community. However, whites never attend HBCUs (historically black colleges), black churches, eat at black restaurants, live in black neighborhoods, or work for black companies. Integration is a one way street. Is that fair?
@norcalnupe I grew up in white, rural southern Ohio, and have always been terrified of black people. Not because they're scary, but because I've been so afraid of saying something stupid and being labeled a "racist" that I've never taken the time to get to know them. So I'm making small steps to change that, I think. I'm an Urban Studies student. I'm living in the black dorm at Stanford. I'm going to South Africa in March. And I'm less and less scared all the time.
How do you think African-Americans feel about white people? We grew up afraid of whites because of what your parents (you know what I mean. essentially, whites in general no your family specifically) actually did to my parents and ancestors. It's one thing to be afraid of words like you. But, it's another thing to be afraid of actually being lynched, or raped by white men. We are afraid of what you have and or will actually do to us because of your power and past actions.
@norcalnupe When you speak of "we," I feel like you're trying to speak for your entire race. I also feel like you're asking me to speak for my entire race, and I feel uncomfortable doing that, because everyone's so different.
I have trouble believing there's still fear of being physically hurt by white people. There are hate crimes on both sides today. I think white people do use their "power" to marginalize black people, but because they feel threatened. I'm may be mostly speaking for myself.
Do you remember Jena 6, Abner Louima, or Shawn Bell? These are all black men who were either killed or put in prison for life. There are still black men that are attacked for simply being black. In America, it's easy to get killed for having a cellphone in your hand. If you get into a fight with a white guy, it's easy to go to prison for the rest of your life for simply giving him a black eye.
@norcalnupe There are many Blacks who are attacking whites for the same thing. There is more violence by blacks against whites today, especially against women.
When you go to South Africa, I want you to focus on who owns the wealth and land in SA. There are millions of black Africans who live in abject poverty while the minority white population enjoy a very comfortable life of wealth and power. whites could care less about the political power as long as they control the wealth. That's why I say it's easy for you and your ilk to say "hey, let's all get along and have fun" when you have gold in your hand and we have dirt.
It was against the law for blacks to even read a book. My grandparents would be killed for just reading. Think of all the black people in my family that could have and would have gone to college if they had the opportunity. However, they did not but your grandparents and ancestors did (whites in general. not you specifically). You have an advantage thus you are at one of the best schools in the nation: Standford. It's easy to be where you are today with a 400 year head start.
@norcalnupe Hopefully, it will inspire others to open dialogues between black people and white people about racism, so we can all stop being afraid of each other.
freedom in their land as well. However, the "freedom" came witha cath. The whites still own 80-90% of the land, all the business, and natural resources: gold, oil, diamonds, agriculture, etc. America is like that as well. Whites kept blacks as their slaves for 400 years and got a major head start. We literally built the foundation of this country that you enjoy the benefits of and we did it for free. Today, you have access, promise, and resources as a direct result of my slave ancestors.

@norcalnupe You expect only whites to be tyrannical... why? People of all races have had hierarchies.
The caste system in India came about way before Europeans supposedly invented race.
