To be honest - I never really play these patterns any more
I was touring with Trilok Gurtu back in 1998 and he asked me to stop playing like John McLauhglin... (I performed his concert "The Mediterranean" some years before that. And was kinda sucked in to his "thing"
It´s a natural thing to "quote" other musicians and poets, but at some point one has to break free and find a personal inner voice.. Otherwise we would miss something really important in life and music :)
i got tired of guitarists many years ago and started listening to horn players .I can play any guitarist style but Metheny and Mclaughin ,after playing 37 years I am still learning thanks to stuff like this.thanks for posting these!!!!!!!!!!! Crippletunnelarthritsismugafugga
Took me a while to figure this out because the ascending and descending patterns are not the same.
Ascending: 1 2 3 5 (A B Db E) 4 5 6 8 (D E Gb A) 7 1 2 4 (Ab A B D) 3 4 5 6 (Db D E Gb) 5 6 7 9 (E Gb Ab B) (Notice the 3rd step does not skip a note as the other steps do)
Descending: 8 6 7 6 (A Gb Ab Gb) 5 4 5 4 (E D E D) 3 1 2 1 (Db A B A) 7 5 6 5 (Ab E Gb E) 4 2 3 2 1 (D B Db B A)
Actually it's the 4th ascending step that does not skip a note. Also note the descending steps repeat notes and the 2nd descending step only uses 2 notes. This is a good fingering exercize.
I seen him to play this scale with alternate picking, but he put a pull-off at 4 note and after every 3 notes.

I've often wondered about John's approach to playing and this has helped tremendously!
The 2 faster versions here bring to mind a banjo players sound and fluidity.
Thanks Andersen!

is it tabbed anywhere?
superhube 3 years ago
You don't need any tab... There's a video, and you can guess the note you can't see by the ear.
It's the best way to improve. Tabs are not to become a requisit.
