What a wonderful human being. I am sure this civic-minded person uses a horse and buggy. I bet he has even used solar power generated electricity to power his faggot "Sundance Film Festival". If only more people would follow his example
wait a minuite...anybody complains about what americans can afford..homes..I'm in the mortgage business. 28 years .its not spending over an above..what they can afford..Its because home prices are dropping..If the mortgage is more than what the house is worth...hello...no matter if you have good credit or not..no lender is going to allow you to refinance. The government passed a new law, to allow borrowers homes to 90% value and forgive the rest..to share 50% equity when you sell.
I think Robert Redford is correct, regardless if hes an actor or producer...however; he is famous..hes talking about energy policy..obviously we are having these current problems with the dependency in China and the middle east and this is being talked about now in the presidental debate how americans want to make that change... Americans are tired of high gas prices and also enviormental issues about global warming. I cannot stand people that are so closed minded
Mr. Redford should stick to acting. His limited knowledge on the subjects he discuss is very obvious. While he may mean well he seems to have more of a political agenda than an energy strategy. Nothing he mentioned could come close to offsetting current oil consumption.
Good point. This clown and others of his ilk might do better spending their time trying to improve the garbage coming out of Hollywood these days. What percentage of stuff coming out of Hollywood is any good? Lower than the President's approval rating I'd bet.
HelmutHedd, where are you from? Poland? Your from a different country, and probably never lived in the U.S however; the garbage we have in hollywood is doing pretty good I might say. Its hypocrites like yourself that keep on watching our American shows, movies, sitcoms and then want to put their two cents in. It is California is where the action is, best weather, movies, amusment parks...high income, high priced homes..its the american dream to live in the U.S.
My family history on the North American continent dates back to the 1700's. I also remember when the product idiots like Redford put out was half-decent. These imbeciles should learn how to make decent entertainment and stfu about their politics.
HelmutHedd, Robert doesn't make products...hes an enviromentalist..for what he believes in. Additionally, you don't come with facts..its just your opinion. Mr. Redford has created the Sundance Film Festival for all over the world..for striving artist..international pictures for artist that have a creative venue to become in the film business. No one complains about the entertainment here in the states..perhaps the bad entertainment it comes from your own country?
hey, perhaps you can become an actor and people will actually listen to you. I think Robert will do fine..he's made some good points however; if its not ethenol..perhaps make more cars that are hybrids. I don't know if it will have enough punch for a BMW or a Mercedes? There goes the idea of Luxury cars..and Ferrari's. Its just that the u.s is so depended on foreign oil. What is wrong with what he says. We also have an issue on the environment..as well..global warming.thumbs up for Robert.
I agree that energy conservation is key to delaying peak oil and hybrids are a great idea. There are other products that could accommodate crude. Such as coal to liquids, nuclear, natural gas, etc. Oil can't be totally offset. I guess what annoys me with this video is his political agenda and limited knowledge about the issue. Corn ethanol is the worst energy policy this country has had in a long time. And the main reason we're so dependent on foreign oil is we can't develop domestic reserves.
The answer is to increase drilling and refining and put the fuckin' Arabs out of business. Along with that the US government can stop subsidizing agriculture and let the price of food reflect what it's worth. Then the Arabs can eat the sand or camel shit, whichever they prefer.
An increase in drilling should only be a temporary "band aid" to our situation. I agree we need to quit depending on Middle Eastern oil. But I think putting too much dependency on such a limited product is a mistake as well. While we use up our own supplies we should use the time to implement a new form of clean unlimited energy. This should have happened in the 70's but there was, and is, too many politicians in the oil men's pockets.
An major increase in drilling and refining would stabilize world prices. The US could control price and dictate to the Arabs what the price will be, but only with a vibrant oil production and refining industry.
In the '70's everyone was told we would run out of oil. It has been estimated that of all the oil that existed, say 200 years ago, we have used only about half to this point. The oil will outlast our need for it. North American oil reserves are greater than the mid-east (Bakken formation) but the left needs to get the hell out of the way.
The mistake people make is to expect government to lead the way in energy. Governments are notoriously bad at picking economic winners.
It's a simple fact that oil is needed today - it's imperative to get the world oil markets out of unstable hands. In short, US oil production and refining needs to put the Arabs out of business.
European energy policy has created an expensive and unwieldy energy market there. Socialist governmental over-regulation and ownership has guaranteed that European energy will always be expensive. Cheap, reliable and abundant energy is necessary to maintain prosperity - conservation ensures higher prices and fewer sources. Clean energy is needed and it will come, but government needs to stay out.
Yes, I understand and agree with that accessment, however it is foolish to rely on oil for our future needs for energy. It is still, and always will be, a limited commodity. Therefore taking the steps to implement a new form of renewable energy is vital for us to begin now. It is also important that this source of energy be cleaner to reduce pollution and cut down on the buildup of greenhouse gasses.
The problem is that governments are eternal screw-ups and to expect them to lead the way on anything is not the way. Developments have been made and more are needed - agreed.
Right now, and in the immediate future, oil is needed. The US is better to produce and refine it and keep the wealth here. Continuing to allow the Arabs to call the shots is foolish. It seems the left would prefer the US maintain this relationship.
So interest in alternative energy is always the highest at the top of the petroleum cycle. A lot of investment money goes into projects that are uneconomic at the low point of the cycle. These investments are also usually subsidized but are quickly abandoned when fuel prices decline because the decisions are based on politics not on economic factors.
Ethanol is not really a great substitute for oil when you factor all the energy used to produce (fertilizer, pesticides, fuel used for farm vehicles) and transport the corn used. Having said that, every industry has a starting point where science is converted into practical use which is subject to market economics. Of course, governments use taxes and regulation to distort market conditions to promote certain industries before market conditions would allow their development.
We are in recession because we are stupid and we continue to spend beyond our means, especially the fucking poor Americans they drive SUVs and live in big homes that they can't afford. I hope the recession will be very long and painful.
moniequa, where do you live? It says on your profile on a small island..that is part of u.s territory..perhaps guam or puerto rico? First of all, my twin sister lived in guam for many years..and I used to travel to visit. Do not make comments on the U.S if you have never lived here..Additonally,its easy to say when your gas prices are not that much if you just have to drive on a small island..saves gas doesn't it. I know when I drove on that island..very small a population of 300k or more.
additonally, monique, your very young and not enough experience expecially in the mortgage business, I've been 28 years..read my message about the industry. we are not in a recession because people spend over and above what they can afford. The foreclosure fall out is a combination of bad loans, lenders not negotiating with borrowers with values dropping, banks going out of business, lenders tighting up credit to consumers.
Lower the interest then tighten up the credit is called wealth transferring. It's perhaps the largest wealthy transferring in US history and they couldn't have accomplished it without the help of stupid lower socioeconomic class Americans. The $700billion bailout maybe failed today but, you mark my word, it'll pass in the nearest future.
Thank you Mr. Redford. To David O'Reilly, YOU STINK! David knows and does NOT care that he/Chevron very much support a torturing, raping and murdering dictator. That pipeline he uses in Burma was built by FORCED slave labor, and HE KNOWS IT. BOYCOTT Chevron.
That would be true, mets4885, if we were living in the 1980's. Fortunately, it's 2008, and technological advances and improved farming practices have allowed ethanol production to yield 67% more fossil energy than put into it. Welcome to the 21st century, fucktard.
Wow that's an EROEI of 1.67 for ethanol (an optimistic estimate). Too bad that for a civilization to be sustained it needs a primary energy source with an EROEI of around 7. You can't turn a years food for one person into one tank of gas for an SUV and call that a solution.
I live in saskatchewan Canada, and the largest company by market capitalization in the country is Potash Corp of Saskatchewan. They are a fertilizer company, which is what allows the increased yields, you are talking about. The company is worth as of today over 70 billion dollars USD. So that EROEI isn't free, it is going to Saskatchewan! lol
Amidst rising bloodshed, President Bush has told the Iraqi Parliament they have till the 31st of May to pass a flawed oil law that could give multinational companies unprecedented control of Iraq's oil fields. But some Iraqi leaders are daring to resist - and they need our help.
Let's tell Iraqis the world supports their right to set their own future
All alternatives to oil require a substantial amount of energy investment, which give a poor EROEI (eroei.com) No alternative, hydrogen, biodisel, tar sands, coal, none of these will compensate for 21 mbpd. Not to mention plastics, pesticides, fertilizers, electricity, heat, asphault, manufacturing and construction are all severaly dependent on fossil fuels!
Part of your assertion is correct, certainly some energy is required to harness and make use of more energy, but also consider that fossil fuels are finite, leaving us with two options, switch to an alternative, preferably renewable energy source 1) now or 2) later, and that energy investment you're worried about will be easier to make if we do it sooner.
Yep! Sadly, we have to be pushed to the wall to do anything. We have SUN, moving WATER, and WIND, all over this country which could provide energy. The clever Japanese are trying to use subway walker's footsteps to power small motors in mats underfoot. There have GOT to be other things. Ethanol net energy loser. I generally agree with RR buy not here. Electric cars, mass transit and alge derived biodiesel are better bets.

No Ethanol. No Hydrogen.
In 2008 new catalytic converters have made Diesel cars legal in all 50 states.
Diesel Jetta is comprable to a Prius in mileage
However in the longer term, we should go Electric
greyfalcon. net/ electriccars.png
Nice part is, even if we run our cars on Coal electricity, it's still greener than a Prius
(Coal is about 3x worse than Natural Gas)

Whats more, electricity for cars can be bought for as cheap as 1 cent per mile.
