I'm 50 years old and still get the same buzz from this as I did when i was 18, last record I played before heading out on a night of youthful abandon, when the world was your oyster and everything was stress free, every time I hear the opening the snare drum kick it off and the first few chords the hair still stands up on the back of my neck

Even if JPJ was playing bass, it wouldn't be Zeppelin. Never can replace Bonham, although you can get pretty close. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were the bread of Led Zeppelin, and JPJ was the peanut butter holding everything together. Having Bonham was equivalent to the difference between making a peanut butter sandwich yourself, or eating one your mom made for you as a kid. He just made it perfect, for no apparent reason.
This song wouldve been really awesome as an opener.. It has been quite a long time since they've rock and rolled.. But there's no other song I could think of to end this show better than some good old RNR..
@GearFiend it was (professionally) filmed for the band itself to review, but there has been no intention of a release yet. Jimmy Page himself said perhaps one day but it will be something that he will spend a lot of time on. So, we just play the waiting game and pray.
Jason Bonham is on the set.... John's son. He played that night with the rest of the band. Robert, Jimmy, and JPJ treat him literally as a son. He's actually doing a "Led Zeppelin Experience" tour with him on drums and a few other guys he picked up. They sound incredible, I saw them live in Boston early November. Amazing show. The singer and guitarist were simply identical.
Oh man, that's sweet! Ask him anything? I love how Robert, Jimmy, and JPJ treat him as a true son. They actually helped promote his tour to some extent and they approved it 100% telling him it's what his father's legacy should have behind it.
@jsox94 I think my sister asked him a few things. I was mostly taken by his warm, friendly demeanor :) I can tell how close he and other guys are. He spoke of them fondly several times during the show.
If you close your eyes you can almost picture them in the 70's. Who cares of the key was different, its still great to listen to. I wish I'd been there thats all I'm saying.
i think they dropped the key cause he had been singing a very different sort of material. plant is wiser these days and knows from past mistakes. listen to live aid. then compare his voice in 2002 in moscow singing rock'n roll. 2002 he sounds better then he did in 1973! Reason? cause his voice is ready for it. this concert was a one off, and although they did practice, his work with Alison took up the majority of his time.
i just LOVE the end when Jason Bonham does the last drum part and robert, jimmy and john just all look at him nail it! they probally felt John Bonhams soul in Jason that night!
Keith Richards has learned what Jimmy Page never did: A good guitar player knows when NOT to play. All of Jimmy Page's soloing over and over makes me wanna sleep after 4 songs.

OMG this was AWFUL!!!! How can anybody on here think this was good? Try listening to it without watching it and it will be painfully obvious. Don't get me wrong, Zep is my all-time favorite band, and every album, and damn near every song they recorded is still great. JPJ is the best bass player ever, and Bonzo is my favorite drummer. Plant used to wail back in the day, and Page is a huge influence. But, I've heard bands in dive bars perform better than this. This was really bad, folks.
Ummm governor remember these guys are not 25 anymore there 65 lets see you get up and do this at there age. I think they played pretty dam good. Yes it wasnt perfect but give them credit.
@mrcarpetmuncherman I understand they're not 25 anymore, nor would I expect them to play like they were. I'm sure John Elway can still throw a football better than most, but he would embarrass himself playing in the NFL now, as would any other older athlete who was once on top of their game. That's why they retire. I'm just saying these guys shouldn't do songs they can't perform at a professional level. They should be proud of their careers, but should be embarrassed of this performance.
Led Zeppelin were(and to some measure, still continue to be) one of the most influential rock bands ever.....even some 30 years after the original demise of the band(RIP Bonzo...one and only), they still command respect that a lot of today's top acts could only dream of. Anyone that doesn't get goosebumps hearing "Rock and Roll" is either higher than a flea on a buzzard's ass, or is completely full of shit.
50% agree cuz as frontman Freddie Mercury was the best ever but as singer plant blows my mind. Page and May rocks great but i have to vote for page. Roger Taylor cant be compared with Bonham. John is the best! .i think the only one who is better is John Deacon than John Paul Jones cuz the bass in zeppelin doesnt have too much relevance, but in Queen they are too much songs that without the bass wouldnt be anything (Another one bites the dust, under pressure, A kind of magic etc)
Surely you jest...Deacon plays just fine but JPJ pretty much defined heavy rock bass with his heavy tone, articulate playing, and R&B-influenced groove. They're in different leagues entirely.
Listen to the "What Is & Never Should Be", "Lemon Song", and then re-evaluate the "relevance" question.
@spartankilltacular LOL, that's the biggest crap i've heared in ages... Deacon is NOTHING compared to JPJ. If you ever listen to How The West Was Won, you can hear JPJ prefectly does what a bassplayer should do: provide balls! Something the whole of Queen lacked!
Elton John had to do the same thing and sure it does take a little of the nostalgic magic out of it but its still Elton John and, in this case, it's still Robert F**king Plant!
Agreed. He has changed music time and time again, been part of four bands (Band of Joy, The Honey Drippers, The Strange Sensation, and of course Led Zeppelin), had a hugely successful solo career, changed styles of music multiple times and rocked them all, even at the reunion concerts that blew major, he still sounded better than most, and has had fun through the years enjoying it all. Then he switched to bluegrass/folk/blues with an American country girl, and then rocked us with a reunion.

It just doesn't sound right in that dropped key. It was obviously done to accommodate Plant's limited range. I mean cripes these guys are 60. It just sounds so disjointed.
that's odd.. I think I heard a song from this concert.. trying to remember which one - and I noticed how identical it sounded to the record. So I don't think it was for all the songs. But why anyway? This repertoire doesn't seem to require one to sing absolutely on top of his voice.
@Punorss seriously dude, give him a break, hes 60 years old, and his guitar playing will probably never be like it was in the past, nonetheless, HES FUCKING JIMMY PAGE!!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For fucks sake it's been 30 years! One would think Page would've learned to play his own damn song live. I swear only him and Chuck Berry can get away with being a shit live players! It's really a shame that 30 years later Zepp keep the title as worst live band!!!
May be Mr.Plant's voice could not hit the high note like used to be, so "Sir" Page kindly put down the key.... But this is the new headache for us like cover players... How to play the first riff on key G?? (Because original riff uses few open strings as the part of the riff code.) Tune the guitar itself down to D from E?
Ah, No I am not againsting the play, just wondering how it was played with the guitar tuned as standard E, since the guitar riff had lot of open strings. But someone told me whole this concert Jimmy used the guitar tuned on D not E.
i wish i was born in the 60's so i could have heard these guys when they first came out. nowadays, jimmy paige is pretty old, but he stills plays guitar like a fuckin beast
Oh who cares about all those little details about Robert's voice - so what? Led Zeppelin were/are the best band in the world and Robert definitely the best singer, not to mention SEXIEST! This concert was fantastic and I was so close to the front that I was in eye contact distance of them!
it's about the overall intensity of the performance, and anyway he sounds great for like 90% of it overall. it's just way different from how he performed it in the early 70s. this is one of the better live versions of this song that i've heard. in all fairness, they played 16 songs in two hours and this was the last one. at least he sounded better than the drummer from the foo fighters lulz.
This version sounds a bit strange because it is tuned down a whole step. OK, it really gave Robert the opportunity to sing like he does on the studio version and the guys still rock!
its simple science really... plant is like 40 years older now. You can sing as good and strong at that age if your lucky, but pushing your voice near the point of distortion is hard when you get to that age...
fantastic job tho they sound great!
btw this is fucking led zeppelin... be lucky they even got together! :D
Plant's voice started wearing away long before then due to just downright poor technique.
Dio is still going strong in his mid-late 60s and sings a very difficult style, but he's a trained vocalist and knows exactly what he's doing, which is why he hasn't damaged his voice to that much of an extent.
@sonorpaiste702 his voice didnt wear down due to poor technique, it wore because at one point he had to get a surgery, and it kinda fuked up his voice, although it was still amasing
his ability first started to diminish due to booze, cigarettes, pot, and wailing his ass off five nights a week for years. it's acquired a few different forms throughout his career, actually. i think he sounds pretty good here, if not quite as intense as he used to. in all fairness, he hasn't sung this one like he did on the album in about 35 years, and his voice has seen considerable improvement from the disappointing state it was in when he toured with page during the 90s.
I agree with everything you're saying except about when he was touring with Page in the 90's. Having looked over tons of those videos, I'd have to say he had up times and down times during those years. Sometimes during those tours he was surprisingly strong vocally. Check out Rock and Roll from Rio 1996and Shepherd's Page Plant 1998 How Many More Times. He's singing as high as he did in the early 70's, even if not with as much crispness.
I do love Zep's work, but Page is one huge mosh of distortion to me. Saw him in '74 and '77 (or '78) and felt the same way. I must say he did compose some incredible pieces, but Page live was always one swash of distortion... Sorry to the fanatics and let your comments begin...
I 100% disagree and think you need your hearing checked because in 75 (they didn't tour in 74 or 78) and 77 even 73 Page used very little distortion especially 75 his distortion was barley different than his clean. Although today he does use a large aomunt of distortion but I would definatley not day it is just one giant swosh of gain
I can't believe they didn't make a music dvd of this concert.

Surely you jest...Deacon plays just fine but JPJ pretty much defined heavy rock bass with his heavy tone, articulate playing, and R&B-influenced groove. They're in different leagues entirely.
Listen to the "What Is & Never Should Be", "Lemon Song", and then re-evaluate the "relevance" question.
makitfunkee 1 year ago 2
@spartankilltacular LOL, that's the biggest crap i've heared in ages... Deacon is NOTHING compared to JPJ. If you ever listen to How The West Was Won, you can hear JPJ prefectly does what a bassplayer should do: provide balls! Something the whole of Queen lacked!
arnoldvld 1 year ago
@spartankilltacular What a bunch of crap. Some of my favorite songs in Zep II had great bass parts that helped carry the song.

Elton John had to do the same thing and sure it does take a little of the nostalgic magic out of it but its still Elton John and, in this case, it's still Robert F**king Plant!

they dropped a key for the whole concert cause hes gotten old big deal.. robert plant can do whatever he wants

not the whole concert
KopperhedVideo 2 years ago

AceOfHeart2012 2 years ago
that's odd.. I think I heard a song from this concert.. trying to remember which one - and I noticed how identical it sounded to the record. So I don't think it was for all the songs. But why anyway? This repertoire doesn't seem to require one to sing absolutely on top of his voice.
assa123assa123 2 years ago
I personally think Zeppelin should just have this show be there last EVER.
This was SUCH a special event why cheapen it by going on tour for 80 dates in a year.
This was such a GOOD NOTE to go out on.
Not saying, I wouldn't go if they toured. But I'm not pissed off in the least if they never play together again.
evh5150316 2 years ago 2
Yeah you are right they run the risk of killing th whole thing.
ledzeplad 2 years ago
I LOVe how Plant slowly gets more and more into it as the song progresses. Especially close to when Page's solo ends.
evh5150316 2 years ago
If he did not have that Les Paul around his fucking knees he would have be able to reach the strings.
Punorss 2 years ago
@Punorss seriously dude, give him a break, hes 60 years old, and his guitar playing will probably never be like it was in the past, nonetheless, HES FUCKING JIMMY PAGE!!!!!

For fucks sake it's been 30 years! One would think Page would've learned to play his own damn song live. I swear only him and Chuck Berry can get away with being a shit live players! It's really a shame that 30 years later Zepp keep the title as worst live band!!!

Ah... this one transposed to the key on "G"!
The original was keyed on "A".....
May be Mr.Plant's voice could not hit the high note like used to be, so "Sir" Page kindly put down the key.... But this is the new headache for us like cover players... How to play the first riff on key G?? (Because original riff uses few open strings as the part of the riff code.) Tune the guitar itself down to D from E?
ttakenaka2001 2 years ago
dude, the guy's 60 give him a fegging break!
specialness16 2 years ago 4
Ah, No I am not againsting the play, just wondering how it was played with the guitar tuned as standard E, since the guitar riff had lot of open strings. But someone told me whole this concert Jimmy used the guitar tuned on D not E.
ttakenaka2001 2 years ago
that's the different between them and you. they can change the key and still rock like they used to do

The moment when Robert tosses the mike on the ground is ultra-cool. It's like, "we came, we played, we kicked your ass - now goodbye"
Vahagnll 2 years ago 3
Oh who cares about all those little details about Robert's voice - so what? Led Zeppelin were/are the best band in the world and Robert definitely the best singer, not to mention SEXIEST! This concert was fantastic and I was so close to the front that I was in eye contact distance of them!
puddledoo 2 years ago
it's about the overall intensity of the performance, and anyway he sounds great for like 90% of it overall. it's just way different from how he performed it in the early 70s. this is one of the better live versions of this song that i've heard. in all fairness, they played 16 songs in two hours and this was the last one. at least he sounded better than the drummer from the foo fighters lulz.
shadowofmorgoth 2 years ago
This version sounds a bit strange because it is tuned down a whole step. OK, it really gave Robert the opportunity to sing like he does on the studio version and the guys still rock!
staernpeder 2 years ago
its simple science really... plant is like 40 years older now. You can sing as good and strong at that age if your lucky, but pushing your voice near the point of distortion is hard when you get to that age...
fantastic job tho they sound great!
btw this is fucking led zeppelin... be lucky they even got together! :D
marshman500 3 years ago
Plant's voice started wearing away long before then due to just downright poor technique.
Dio is still going strong in his mid-late 60s and sings a very difficult style, but he's a trained vocalist and knows exactly what he's doing, which is why he hasn't damaged his voice to that much of an extent.
sonorpaiste702 2 years ago
@sonorpaiste702 his voice didnt wear down due to poor technique, it wore because at one point he had to get a surgery, and it kinda fuked up his voice, although it was still amasing

Robert had throat problems years ago. He had surgery on his vocal chords years ago, has never been the same since.
ludwigking 3 years ago
his ability first started to diminish due to booze, cigarettes, pot, and wailing his ass off five nights a week for years. it's acquired a few different forms throughout his career, actually. i think he sounds pretty good here, if not quite as intense as he used to. in all fairness, he hasn't sung this one like he did on the album in about 35 years, and his voice has seen considerable improvement from the disappointing state it was in when he toured with page during the 90s.
shadowofmorgoth 3 years ago 2

Sorry to the fanatics and let your comments begin...
dlawrick 3 years ago
I 100% disagree and think you need your hearing checked because in 75 (they didn't tour in 74 or 78) and 77 even 73 Page used very little distortion especially 75 his distortion was barley different than his clean. Although today he does use a large aomunt of distortion but I would definatley not day it is just one giant swosh of gain
