I remember when Knotts Berry Farm was a family's social event; kids panning for gold, simple rides & homemade jam....those were the good ole days

We lived in SoCal for several years in the early '80s after being transferred there from the Midwest by my employer at the time, Uncle Sam. We had never heard of Knott's Berry Farm before that, and not yet knowing its history, thought it was an odd name for an amusement park. However, it soon became one of our favorite places to go, even more so than Disneyland. We liked its Old West theme and family atmosphere, and our two preschool-aged sons (they're now in their 30s) loved Camp Snoopy.

At least it's not like Magic Mountain, yet! My favorite park about theme parks is you must be scanned as if you're going on an airplane ride. Little thugs have ruined all the good times I had at Magic Mountain. What Magic Mountain did wrong was to get rid of the family themes like the troll train ride. Once that ride got yanked out, it all turned to shit.

i never knew the other side to Knott's Berry Farm. I went there once a few months ago and doesn't really seem as close as it is to this video. It's all rides and rides and stuff, but back then it seemed like a million bucks

It's sad now. Since the Knott family sold it it seems to be competing with Six Flags. Lost it's original "family feel." :(

they sold it? wow. California history is something. I'm from colorado and you know tourists.. but that is true how all the major theme parks are losing their family feel to it and just going for the rides. but now-a-days. those rides are what families are basically into.

They sold it in 1997. Cedar Fair Entertainment Company currently owns it -- I don't know if they were the original buyers. My dad took me to see Myron Floren (famous accordian player on "The Lawrence Welk Show") at the "John Wayne Theatre" in Knott's Berry Farm in the early 1970s. I remember seeing Walter and Cordelia Knott sitting in the audience.

When the family were selling Knotts in 1997, Disney was interested. If Disney bought Knotts, it would've been converted into Disney's America. The Knott family feared that Disney would've eliminated most of what Walter Knott brought in. Ironically, Cedar Fair eliminated more than what Disney would've eliminated.

Knotts was great back in the 60's and 70's. Today it's not worth a visit. Magic Mountain and Disneyland are much better now Knotts just want's to be a ride park.

I agree all the classics like The Soap Box Racers, Knott's Bear-y Tales, Kingdom of the Dinosaurs, The Haunted Shack, and all the other great classics are eliminated and with their absence the park today is just much more less than it was back then even though i wasn't around in the 80's,70's, or the 60's. I went in the 90's and 2000's

Ah the memories. I remember my Dad walking on the old boards in his boots and pretending to be a cowboy. The mule rides, the gardens with wood "animals", panning for gold, the snake oil salesman and old Indian, the biiig redwood tree with it's history written in its rings, and oh yeah, the devil diorama where he's turning a wheel and making a volcano look aggressive. So many memories . . . and all for FREE!

My 87 year old mom has an autographed book of Walters that he gave her when she worked in the chicken kitchen way back when. She loved the Knotts and always speaks very highly of them. My grandma was there house keeper and Mrs. Knott always treated her great and like a good friend for many years.
