You'd have to be a musician to understand why that was "soooo" fantastic. The subtle way she moves the music forward using the rhythm of the words is superb. She also honors the agogic accents in the prose to perfection, never allowing the notes to alter them, even if it gives her the chance to vocally show off. You can't just listen to the sound of the voice if you want to appreciate good singing. In fact it has very little to do with "it."
@tadcastria ...I think you are 100% right. When I heard this performance I felt like I understood what Puccini meant. Liu is no glamour puss. She is a humble scared and tragic young girl....and serious. As I said, not the gorgeous perfumey Moffo/Price/Te Kanawa ilk. Actually tebaldi does a nice version of this even though her voice bores me to tears and she sings chronically flat above the staff.
She is so beautiful and so is her voice - thank you so much for posting this. Her performance of Tatyana's letter scene in Cardiff was simply mindblowing: one of the most marvellous musical experiences I have ever had.
goozebumbs... Ive been trying to find her name for such a long time.. but i kept forgetting her name.. and i finally found her! yay! second step.. finding an album of her so i can listen to her over and over again :D
@jenson7720 ACTUALLY they do! when you get into your passagio, its important to smile, and the higher you go, lifting the cheekbone muscles has alot to do with how well/pretty the sound comes out
@tabholowka only if you sing shalowlly. If your breath support is good, you need no gimmicks on your face to have the sound come out. If Ghena Dimitrova, a large dramatic soprano could do without gimmick, so can you, probably a lyric soprano.
