Hey kids, stop fighting! if you read my post well, I stated that this is "just my personal opinion". It's the way I see it, the way I feel about it. It doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong according to your own opinions. Got it?
Right he is playing his slam clown solo in a varied form, not much varied from the original solo. That is surprising since I've seen other solos on different bass instruments that were pure improv within his style. He is still the man though!
@iceberg220 I don't agree with iceberg220. Its like, any guitarist that switched to bass playing (all sounded the same) though Alain is special, one can't touch Marcus re creativity).
Alain is a great player but Marcus is way much more creative, just listen to their works regardless of one's musical preference.

I've been listening to Alain since in the 80s so I know what I am saying.
he's often revolving aound a pentatonic but putting many more out-of-scale notes, that is very jazz-fusion like, after you master the pentatonic, try monkeying around with other notes, like the fifth, the third, the seventh, doing some chromatic notes and chromatic licks! have fun! :D
You are an icredible conossieur of music theory and harmony..as well as a bass virtuoso..thank you for making me believe that!! Once again..U have Class, taste, music knowledge...sense of ritihm...icredible technique..YOU are THE so called!! "PACKAGE"...thank you SIR!!
He uses an alternate thumping style. He uses down-stroke thumb with upstroke index. He doesn't upstroke on the string with his thumb a la Wooten. He said he spent a lot of hours wood shedding the technique to get the thump slap and index pop to sound the same. Bill Dickens basically uses the same technique but adds a lot of hammer-ons. A lot!
sua maesta alain caron!!! è sempre un piacere vederlo suonare...ma come cazzo fa a fraseggiare in slap in quella maniera...con quella scioltezza... mostruoso!!!
let's just say Caron can do what Miller does but not vice versa.

Marcus is much funkier... Perhaps Caron has more technique, but who cares?

Hmm. The solo he plays here sounds awfully similar to the one on 'slam the clown' from his live DVD.
There are several lines he plays which are exactly the same. Same key and everything.

Marcus Miller is a master of the bass, but Alain Caron is much more creative. Just my personal opinion...

the fifth, third and seventh are all in the pentatonic scale.

yeah, and that's those notes you wanna play around with, sharping and flatting them or playing em all chromatic
Eastsiderock 2 years ago
check out the dorian scale too, it is often used as ''homebase'' in fusion

Thanks a lot for your response, very interesting.
Wish I could master this. Seems you need lots and lots of practice, control etc to get it. Like learning to walk again.
