Ok, the question is what else is there to do at the radio station when you show is done (in a half hour).. THere is no show prep. DO you do your own sales? Do you do maintenance at the transmitter?
They use VT for some stations I listen to, and they even use the same guys and change their names, like the listeners are morons. They VT two stations and do the highest rated one live.
@tvnetdude - I work in radio FULL TIME. (5 hrs a day) I get a very good salary. That's why I've stayed in it radio for over 20 years. Because you can make very good money working very few hours.
Wow, voice tracking is good for newcomer or wannabe DJs, so if they have to clear their throat or if they sneeze, fart, snart, hiccup, yawn, burp, hiccurp, or yurp (yawn with a mouth-wide-open burp thrown in) while talking on the mic, they can just do it over. Is there a trick to keep yourself from doing any of those on the air live (or while recording for that matter)? I did hear one guy sneeze on the air one time. That practically never happens, so I couldn't help but laugh. :)
@UtRadioGuy I believe you, but I never hear it happen. One exception is that I did hear one guy sneeze on the air, and I happened to get it on tape. This was during a fundraiser for a non-commercial station, so it's not he could hold it in until he finished his voice break. I wish I had a tape player to hook up to my puter, and could figure out how to record and post to Youtube. That would be so cool! The only other closest thing to that I've seen is a TV weather reporter with laryngitis.
hey man, if you could is there anyway u could show us how you put the jingles and audio used in the show on the buttons on the board? that would be cool! :)
Voice Tracking is getting popular where I am from, in northern Ontario. My question is about your song requests. If you're pre-recording during the daytime hours, how do you put on "same day" song requests into your evening show? And your song previews and commercials, is there a producer or does that computer run all ads and songs in their given order?
Hey interesting how you say about making requests for the 80's at 8 show. You obviously don't actually play those requests that night if it is not a live show. A local station in my area (well actually nationwide) but with a local breakfast has that breakfast show voicetracked. Yes a voicetracked breakfast and network shows afterwards.
This comment came from my litter brother Marty who Is 30 years old and was mooching off my mother by living at her home. Well I got his ass kicked out of there and he has been doing all kinds of stuff to get back at me!
What do you mean? Are you talking about my voice, or a low voice you sometimes hear on the radio? It don't matter at all what your voice sounds like now days. It's all about how well you can carry yourself on the air, and your personality!
The commenter means, I think Rick, "hitting the post"....please explain the way that the VT system tightens up that job that used to be done in the jocks head......B
You can hit the post just like you can when you are live. There is NO difference! I hear the end of all the songs, and hear as much of the start of the songs as I want.
The ONLY difference between VT-ing and live is, when you VT you don't hear the entire song, and your not in the studio for 4-5 hrs. I can even take calls & requests from right here at home. I just log into the music log from home and make the changes I want. So I still hear all the music, just not the whole song. Watch the video again. Or maybe I don't understand what it is you are asking, or saying.
you know posting vocals how you finish the intro to the song right as the words start. I know it sounds simple, but its hard to pace yourself on saying that last word so that as soon as you say it, the words to the song start.
Hey enjoyed the vids on VT'ing with Scott Studios. I'm impressed that they gave you a 360 for voice tracking purposes. I used to work for your company in Boise Idaho, but our studios weren't as nice as yours are in SLC. Must be nice to work in market 31! See ya...
This is the BEST radio group I have ever worked for. They care about the people and in the 5 years I have been here 2 people have been fired, and there was a reason for that. As far as market #31 you forget about that, but yes it is cool!
El Shanemeister; Despite the negative comments, at least you are still jocking, regardless of whether it's vt or not...Being a "production manager" on a group of five stations that are all satellite sux. Especially after six straight years live. What I still can't believe is people still call wanting to speak to "so and so", thinking they are IN the studio, and even when you give them an 800 number, they STILL don't get it...Dig your channel, keep it up. Best, b
That is still the #1 thing that gets me. The calls we get. Listeners have NO idea we are not at the station when we VT. Even my own family gets confused at times. They call me when I'm on the air and ask...Are you at the station right now? DUH! That just means we are that good! Later!
This is NOT radio,it is trying to Bullshit the listener.Fuck Robots in Radio Stations. Most Jocks today could NEVER do a live broadcast having to pull their own music and playing spots on cart as well as running a tight show.Jox nowadays are mouse jockies.
I have been doing this for over twenty years. I did a 4 person morning show for 13 of the years in the late 80's and early 90's. We hand NO computers at all!!! I had to pull spots, music, run a manual log. and pull carts in and out with all our music beds and sfx. We halled ass all morning long. The computers have made things alot better and we can now access things 100 times faster! I have done both and I like it how it is now days. I do miss the old days tho.
I did The(drake Format) i have yet to use a system that was set up so you could dovetail and mix elements at the same time like 2 and 3 punch carts . The traditional Oldies format was fun,Take the Mystery Jukbox you had to do before the 50 break,if you had a Lesley Gore song of 1:37 with a fade you had to get the 9th caller cue it up and go into the 50 with it. We used to Pride ourselves on being that tight.Anyways thnx fo the conversation.
I ALWAYS hate it when I have one short song into the :20, :40, or :50 break when doing a contest. Asking for caller #9 at the start of a 2:00 min song, getting your caller, and recording them, (Then they screw something up like the call letters - so now I have to edit) and getting their call ready to roll. It's a GREAT challenge and I can always get it done but you have to haul ass! Have a Merry Christmas!
I wish it were that easy. To record one show I have show prep to do, I need to pull up everything on the computer, have all my audio drops lined up and ready, requests and dedications to mention, get level checks on all inputs, then I can start to record. Every pre recorded show = 1 1/2 hrs show prep.
It is the best job a person could have. Get paid full time to work part time! And it sure beats working for a living! The only hard part about it is being able to talk about something while you are doing a million other things with your hands, and you need to know everything that's going on in the world. You must be good at multitasking!
If it's a HUGE news story I would have to come in. We have a station monitor here 24 hrs a day, but they do not get to go on the air. They are here to get us back on if a station goes off air.
I enjoyed every minute of these videos, it's so much fun to watch the DJs do their jobs. I love getting a close personal inside look at how you do your radio breaks, these are awesome. I'd love to see a lot of the same stuff again like your old videos. Thank you for doing these. :)
I'm fascinated by the radio studios. I have visited a couple of them and the atmosphere was always special, there was some tension in the air... I loved it.
what automation system do you recomend ? (for onair and voicetracking...)
(sorry for my bad english)
