Hey, guess what... there's this fantastic new invention called 'gears' - by jove... they're a veritable wonder of the modern age! Bikes with this miraculous invention might not look as "cool" propped up against Starbucks as you buy your grande skinny latte, but boy do they make light work of hills.
What an astonishingly arrogant assumption! I suppose every generation thinks they invented the wheel, let alone the fixed gear bicycle ('fixie' in your modern speak). We used to use them as kids in the 1970's, we built what we called 'trackers'... usually a Raleigh Bomber frame, fixed cog and bullhorn handlebars. I am more than proficient in the art of using one, I just grew out of it in adulthood and realised that gears serve a very important purpose. Especially on hills.
@GhibliFan1 Oh, you're preaching about arrogance, while you're implying that fixie riders don't know about gears.
Most fixie riders are very experienced in bicycle riders - I've been riding with gears daily for 20 years. After all that hassle I wanted something light, simple, fast and hassle free. A fixie. A Raleigh Bomber really has nothing to do with the usual fixies we see today. The weight, geometry, everything. Sorry.
Btw, I used do interval training as well, now I just call them hills ;)
The original comment was left for "most fixie riders", which actually isn't people like you... it's the people buying multicoloured overpriced fixies from Urban Outfitters (YES, the clothes shop!) and not even considering other bikes because that's what all their Starbucks quaffing chums are riding. It's a fashion... people who've been riding them years and use them to improve their abilities are a minority. I even see fashionistas *pushing* them through the trendy parts of town!
... and as regards the Raleigh Bomber or similar styles, literally the frames were the only thing we'd use, we'd also use roadie frames, the rest we added ourselves and they were not so different to the modern equivalent. You just never bought them off a pompous bike snob or from a clothes store, you got your hands dirty and made one. The riding principle was the exact same, and we never used brakes. They were for leisure. Commuting is another story, and gears are important.
@GhibliFan1 I love it how you almost made sense, and then bluntly lose all objectivity in the last sentence "Commuting is another story, and gears are important."
I use my fixed gear bicycle for commuting 16-40 km daily (incl. a few bigger hills), loving it. Obviously it's not the only way out, but it works for me and I wouldn't want anything else.
On my either my racer or hybrid, I'd wave back at you up a hill and then find a nice gear ratio to make sure you never got the chance to answer me back on the way down it. But one thing I'll give you, you probably have stronger legs than me (and will probably require knee replacement a lot sooner) ;)
@GhibliFan1 Yeah sure you would - if I was obsessed with speed, I'd commute with a geared bike as well. And I'd wave back at you when you're servicing your gears, lubing your chain, or wondering who stole all your fancy components. There's pros and cons in everything.
I run Shimano Alivio, once set up, they run for years with a quick clean and a drop of lube. Being one down from Deore, no one's gonna steal them as it wouldn't be very profitable. However, the currently TRENDY and in vogue fixie is at a very big risk of having the whole bike stolen. Also, have you seen the prices some are commanding? For what? A steel frame with minimal components? The price of any other bike is arrived at via components. A fixie from it's trendyness. It's crazy!
hey all you fags, i am just getting into this now, and i am not some pussy ass hipsters, so keep judgin every aspect of these fixie riders, one day i might be rollin by and ill crack your fucking head for just some minor stress relief, what a world we live in where people get out do something creative for stress relief and every little armchair general can talk sit, ive never seen a subject with so many judgemental rich kids making fun of every aspect of another, you fags kicked the horse2death
Lol who the fuck walks a fixie uphill?? And dont say come to SF and ride it, cause i live and ride in SF. Try the Marin Highlands on a fixie, shit is no joke.
@piratapan haha you think the money goes to the people and to the cities? hell no. the top 5 percent of the rich in the usa own over half of all the wealth in the country. that's capitalism for you
@piratapan and since when is asphalt a measure of wealth? thats why we are the richest nation on the planet. we understand these things. or maybe the 24K gold underneath it shifted. no way of telling, at the moment. but we will get back with you on this wonderful website we created so the rest of the world could talk shit about us.
@driftunit Not a bad little hill, but if you're going to be calling the guy out, shouldn't you be finding something steeper and longer than what he's already got?
Here's the thing - it's technically impossible to do a manual on a bike that won't let you stop cranking. Therefore these guys aren't doing manuals, they're doing..... WHEELIES! AHAHAHAHAHAHA! WHEELIES! So lame.
People can do what they want, but I do agree with you that trying to do tricks on road or track bikes is abit silly, kind of like running a race with dress shoes on.
People can do what they want, but I do agree with you that trying to do tricks on road or track bikes is abit silly, kind of like running a cross country race with dress shoes on.
Very cool. I can see that you are on Embarcadero in front of the Ferry building where Market dead ends. Been there many times. I wish I was there right now
I'm trying to understand the fixed gear stuff. This style comes from france right? It's just a 10-speed bike with cranks/gears like a bmx bike? fixed gears correct?
@JimboMLG you kindof have it figured out. first of, no gears. its not like a bmx because it does not freewheel..meaning, when the bicycle is moving the crank must be rotating(pedaling). if the bicycle moves backwards, the cranks petal backwards. imagine that the cogg(gear) on the rear wheel is welded in place so when the wheel moves, the chain is moving in the same direction.if you lock your legs up, the back wheel locks up:)
besides walking up san fran hills, i am sure these guys walk down just as many san fran hills when cars are around. too cool for brakes. give em a brake. when their bikes are locked up, install a brake on their bike surreptitiously just for fun.then take a video of them coming out of the gay bar discovering it."what the heck". they will be too embarrassed to ride with a brake, because a crew member might spot him and clown on em for it. post it on u tube.oh dang what a laugh we will all have.
i see your dilemma, sweetabix3. and i thought i would have the same problem, but its a matter of getting used to it, and you hardly get put in situations where you need to take dangerously sharp turns. and also, various storebought bikes have flipflop hubs, so you can do freewheel or fixie. a good one would be maybe an SE Draft Lite, or a SE Lager, both of which are fixed / freewheel. they should also be on incredible sales because the 2010 models are almost out ( i got mine 40% off)
im not sure if i shoudl get a fixed gear or a single speed, because i liek the idea of the pedals continuosly going around , but like if i was to take a bend to sharp then the pedal would hit the group and then throw me off the bike, which obv doesnt sound so good (N) so shall i get a single speed or a fixed gear ? can someone get back to me on this please ? thank you x
If you decide to get a fixed gear, you will fall in love. You will feel like one with the bicycle. To combat your cranks scraping the ground, you can get your hands on a compact crankset. Eventually, you will learn how to corner easily without hitting the ground.
its way easier to climb hills on fixed gears than single speeds. plus, you can do tricks and track stand on fixed. sharp turns don't really occur that often.
Honestly, singles have almost all the weaknesses of fixed (1 gear) but none of the advantages.
I can't agree more! I was there this weekend and every time I saw a hill like this, I about shit my pants!! Haha (not really) And there were some steeper than this, too!
....as i was saying; is a successful roulette player awesome or stupid? suck on that when a fixed gear rider gets smacked at 20mph by someone's side mirror cuz they couldn't stop.
@Pandacycle I agree , i have nothing against the bikes or riding one , its the trendy little conforming fags that are all pretentious about them riding one.
Beautiful...simply marvelous. Thanks very much for posting this video. I love it. You guys are so amazing. I'm a bicyclist myself. great stuff you got here.
I'd recommend 46 or 48t big ring and a 16 rear sprocket, this is a good gearing for most urban riding... But be warned, you can seriously destroy your knees riding too big of a gear. I'd also recommend installing a front brake for emergencies... and always wear a helmet! It only take one fall to make you hate life.
make sure u feel comfortable with that handlebar..just dont get the short handlebar where it only have space for ur 2 hands and no more space..that 1 is dangerous,,
Awesome bikes but the fixed gear culture is mostly a fad filled with outrageously expensive bike parts and more than a handful of pretentious club members.
I've been riding a velodrome (track) bike for quite a while, but i didn't consider riding it in the city.. too dangerous.
and i suppose those aren't track gear ratios like 53-13 or 60-15 or other.. more like 40-15 otherwise i don't see how you can get started and not be so slow at starts, and braking would be so hard to do.
I'll consider making my own fixie, but still it's a dangerous thing to do so.
If that dude had a real bike he wouldn't have to walk it up the hill at the beginning of the vid. "Fixies" are the one distinguishing mark of the true douchebag hipster.
i know how to skid by getting up of fthe seat and putting your weight on the from wheel, but how do you skid while sitting on the seat and going down a hill?
As someone who has been riding mountain bikes and jumping my whole life, fixie riders think they are WAY too good...get on a real bike and show me what you can do.
I agree with sonjunkie. I just got a fixie, and trust me, I've gotten a lot of crap from people that have been riding for like a year and can do a trackstand. I don't use it to do ticks, merely to get around.
Ya, wish there were no fixed social stigmas with fixed gears... These guys have enough riding talent that I doubt they ride for an image. I ride because of the direct drive. No drifting- must pay attention at all times. A denser ride.
people on here are right, some people do it just to fit in. So it sucks for the people just starting out, for everyone assumes they are doing it to be cool, when they are doing it because they fell in love with it.
Man once i got on a fixed gear i fell in love with it and im no hipster it just feels so natural and its a fucken rush weaving in and out of traffic in NY
a track bike is completely different than a moutain/road/bmx bike because it has a direct drive train. there for it would be very unfair and unprecedented to compare between these two.
haha more then half of the population in SF rides a fixie. I personally hate them. but a lot of my friends have them and they seem gnarly, they dont walk them down the hills. one of my friends gets hit by a car almost every day.
i live in SF dummy, i see all the hipsters riding them with their sick hipster bike hats. i also see kids steal them too. kinda funny, you spend thousands of dollars on this cool looking bike to fit in and have it get stolen. who hoo
hipsters huh.........funny, and we don't get fixies to fit in we do it to ride and have fun and i know a lot of people who used it to fit in but they ended up having it run thier lifes so shut the fuck up beforeyou start runnin ur bullshit mouth if you don't even ride fixie, and yah of course there are bikes that are going to get stolen it happens all the time w/ all bikes, skateboards and scooters

big chainring small cog [:

I'd recommend 46 or 48t big ring and a 16 rear sprocket, this is a good gearing for most urban riding... But be warned, you can seriously destroy your knees riding too big of a gear. I'd also recommend installing a front brake for emergencies... and always wear a helmet! It only take one fall to make you hate life.

AELsteez 2 years ago

Awesome bikes but the fixed gear culture is mostly a fad filled with outrageously expensive bike parts and more than a handful of pretentious club members.

I busted my arse three times trying all the tricks and they were worth it.

I'll consider making my own fixie, but still it's a dangerous thing to do so.

i just got a fixed gear and it soooo much fun
10spicymeatballs 2 years ago
If that dude had a real bike he wouldn't have to walk it up the hill at the beginning of the vid. "Fixies" are the one distinguishing mark of the true douchebag hipster.
saintmatthieu 2 years ago
you dont need to be a hipster to have a fixed gear bike. they are just more exciting than regular bikes. it feels more natural.
marlo916 2 years ago
You're an idiot and he shouldn't have walked up that hill either way. He's just out of shape. Not a douche simply because he rides fixed.
zeppelingroupie13 2 years ago
Haha I love how people are saying "you can't ride fixed" well you get on the bike and you start pedaling. There ya go, you're riding fixed. :)
GEKProductions 2 years ago
i know how to skid by getting up of fthe seat and putting your weight on the from wheel, but how do you skid while sitting on the seat and going down a hill?
rangers94cup 2 years ago
stop pedaling.

As someone who has been riding mountain bikes and jumping my whole life, fixie riders think they are WAY too good...get on a real bike and show me what you can do.
sean9820 2 years ago
get a real bike?
fuck off dude
hellpirate666 2 years ago
I agree with sonjunkie. I just got a fixie, and trust me, I've gotten a lot of crap from people that have been riding for like a year and can do a trackstand. I don't use it to do ticks, merely to get around.
kimsterjizznugget 2 years ago
Ya, wish there were no fixed social stigmas with fixed gears... These guys have enough riding talent that I doubt they ride for an image. I ride because of the direct drive. No drifting- must pay attention at all times. A denser ride.
jasoncreek 2 years ago 3
people on here are right, some people do it just to fit in. So it sucks for the people just starting out, for everyone assumes they are doing it to be cool, when they are doing it because they fell in love with it.

These vids makes me want to get a fixie, but I'll wait till I move to somewhere more flat...I'm too fat and out of shape to ride one in the city...

a track bike is completely different than a moutain/road/bmx bike because it has a direct drive train. there for it would be very unfair and unprecedented to compare between these two.
billtranman 2 years ago
San Francisco seems like a dumb place for fixies. A lot of very steep hills. Spend half your time off the bike.
MattyBison 2 years ago 2
haha more then half of the population in SF rides a fixie. I personally hate them. but a lot of my friends have them and they seem gnarly, they dont walk them down the hills. one of my friends gets hit by a car almost every day.
chadillac745 2 years ago 2
This comment has received too many negative votes show
fixies are for hipster wannabes
chadillac745 2 years ago
your proof is?????
conor512 2 years ago 2
i live in SF dummy, i see all the hipsters riding them with their sick hipster bike hats. i also see kids steal them too. kinda funny, you spend thousands of dollars on this cool looking bike to fit in and have it get stolen. who hoo
chadillac745 2 years ago
hipsters huh.........funny, and we don't get fixies to fit in we do it to ride and have fun and i know a lot of people who used it to fit in but they ended up having it run thier lifes so shut the fuck up beforeyou start runnin ur bullshit mouth if you don't even ride fixie, and yah of course there are bikes that are going to get stolen it happens all the time w/ all bikes, skateboards and scooters
conor512 2 years ago
