These are terrible brakes. Not long had them (came on a new bike) Once bedded in, they only worked a couple of times, a cheap set of V brakes work better than these did
The information is good, thanks for that but I've never seen the front brake lever on the left hand side before. Is that the American standard? In Aus we have the front brake lever on the right and rear lever on the left, and a bike I imported from England had the same configuration as Aus.
In countries that drive on the left, the front brake is on the right, and vice-versa. This is (I believe) so you can use your non-front brake hand to make hand signals without putting your arm into traffic, so you can signal and still have your hand on your most powerful brake. Don't know about Oz, but in North America, all hand signals are done with the right arm.
i dont know where in NA you live but in America hand signals are done with the left arm. subsequently, motorcycles keep the front brake on the right side.
Yeah, my mother-in-law got me a cheap bike from the US air base Lakenheath here in England, the front brake was on the left side (sitting on the bike), a quick cable swap and all was back to normal. This confuses me as would the front brake be on a motorcycle or moped (twist 'n' go) be the same? If not why confuse people with bicycle brakes?
I own a Trek 4300 (no disc) for 5 years now and I wanted to upgrade it and install some disc brakes on it. I bought the Avid BB5 disc brakes, but I can only install the front one without an extra mounting bracket. Can you help with the mounting bracket I need for the rear one?
i had the same exact problem today in fact, you need to just go to your lbs and they will probably just give you one (depending on whether or not you bought them there)
yea man i have a simmillar problem. no matter how much i set up my disk breaks they wont stop rubbing :( but it feels fast i like the way it feels so i dont really care. because i love the way they are. but if you tell me what your brakes are doing maybe i can help you.
well it happened to me also but you have to wear the brake pads a bit and after that they will have a greater grip on the disc.. i think this in common with disc brakes. i hope that this would proove usefull.
Nice video. Would love ot see one on how ot replace Avid BB5 brake pads.

Really? I have had these brakes on a mountain bike for 4-5 years now and have just replaced the pads 2 or 3 times. And I really do ride hard.

Really? I've always been doing them with the left. I googled it, and it turns out all hand signals are done with the left in the US.

so, does anyone know if I can install hydraulic disk brakes (Avid Juicy 5) on a Mongoose Blackcomb?
masso172 2 years ago
Just buy a new bike. The brakes would probably cost more than you payed for the bike.

thanks for this... saved me a lot of time and I suspect cash. very clear instructions. I look forward to more.

are you stupid or something y do you have the front brake on the left
epten2 3 years ago
The front brake is supposed to be on the left side of the bike (when you are sitting on the bike, the brake should be on the left side).
This is true for both the front and the back.
You may want to rephrase you comments too.

Are the discs suppose to bend even when you're not squeseing the brake lever? or Is it because I have to true my rims again?

Finally went to my local to fix it. Now they're very powerfull, but alway need adjustement after sometime, to realign the brake pads.
RaisedFist418 3 years ago
feels snappy, i'm sure it's powerful - you did fantastic!
nixego 3 years ago 25
Seem more easy than it's. After 4h of setting and testing. I can't even get the braking power equal to my previous V-brake.

Actually mechanical disc brakes are not much better than V-brakes.
If you want real breaking power, get hydraulic brakes...
i got MAGURA julie(210/190mm) atm and they are SICK!
