Its not time for the jokes guys. If you were on that plane, i bet you d shit ur pants big time! Thanks to the experienced pilots and maybe God the passengers are ok!
@shahzebamin Fact : Only for military applications, it's a myth otherwise. My friend is a pilot and he's nearly blind. You need 2 pairs of glasses, or 6 pairs of contact lenses. (At least in Canada)
@atariforever2002 Same reason truck drivers drive so hard... there is a schedule to keep and folks don't like hearing about reasons for being late. Most landings are in a crosswind of some kind. This was an extreme case, however you don't see plane parts all over the place, so it can be done safely. These pilots train for just such events and this pilot learned well. Go around, let a couple flights behind you land (they have schedules too) and go at it again. Miss it again, head to alternate.
@TheJJluv123 A 'Go Around' is aviation talk for going around and trying again. Typicaly done when the cross winds are to strong, as the wind is constantly changing the plane may fair better on the next attempt.
@wajikhan1 After this attempt, while the plane went around to get back in line to land, this was heard over the intercom: "Ladies and gentlemen, the pilot has authorized everyone on board a free shot of whiskey as a way of saying "We're sorry, your landing has been delayed temporarily." Also, please stop crowding the lavatories. Thank you for dying with... I mean.. flying with us... !!! ... huh huh.... "
u wouldn't believe it .. That was a Lufthansa flight and the pilot in command was female.. I have a friend their who told me that the pilot was shaken by the experience but recovered and was back in the cockpit in just a few days.
I wonder why they landed there. Now all airplanes even have microburst detectors and something like this (heavy crosswind) should have been avoided without any excuse.
@ncheriyan I would definitely agree with you about the passengers part. But crosswind landing is generally a common thing. It is simply the way to land when wind is crossing the runway. It only becomes that hard when it is coupled with a sudden wind sheer or an abrupt change of wind speed on very short final.
I know what you mean. Most big airplanes have wind shear or microburst detectors. I have taken flying lessons in a Piper and Cessna and crosswind is not that hard. I check the windsock and ofcourse listen to the weather report.
How many hours do you have in an A320? A crosswind in an A320 is a bit different than a crosswind in a Piper or Cessna. I'd bet they attempted to land regardless of whether the crosswind was out of limits, based on the sharp crab angle, resulting failed attempt and left wing scrape before initiating a go-around.
I never flew a turbine or widebody but the point I was trying to make is if I take risk management with a small airplane seriously, then an ATP commanding a multimillion dollar plane which is much harder to maneuver than a piper or cessna single engine, and that too with 100s of lives onboard, shouldn't take this kind of risk.
Exactly mate! My CFI always stresses the importance of staying within the plane's handling limits...incl crosswind. I am not a pro pilot...just a beginner hobbyist but I am very risk-averse...hopefully complacency will never hit me to be sorry later on.
I reckon that pilot was playing chicken with the crosswind, because even the approach looked dangerous. Shoulda called a go-around long before. Luck saved them, not pilot skill.
ladding at the crosswinds are very dangerouse especially if your flying a Tail Dragger because I've tried landing the tail dragger plane such as a piper Cube and I've spined out and fliped over and I blow the wings apart.
passenger 1: "I never knew planes could do drifts like cars do!"
Pilot over P.A: "Excuse me ladies and gentlemen.........AAAAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!..................phew, that was close....look! a bushy thing with green leaves is getting bigger infront of the plane!
The pilot did do well to remain in control and prevent a disaster, but if I was to pass any judgement (as a non professional pilot), I'd question whether he should've aborted some seconds before he did.
Personally, I would've called "Go Around" at 0:36 - the aircraft clearly isn't under sufficient control
Been there. Done that! He nearly killed everyone. The maneuver is called side slipping. It's a normal landing procedure for cross winds. I call what he did "pilot error" He did the maneuver wrong.
I think he underestimated the situation. Seems he thought that he could pull the plane straight before touchdown, but the wind catched him. If he would let the plane's main gear on the ground, and put some weight on it, I think he would have made it.. Nevertheless, good save!
