Portugal was Spainish since 1581.
i met my first Barbet yesterday. great dog! this seems to have sent me on a search about the water dogs of europe. that's how i've come across this nice video. sorry to see so many angry argumentative posts here! for me, i've really liked and admired all the water dogs i've met. clearly they all share a lineage, i hope we can all agree on that?
IBERIAN stock of water dogs that over centuries evolved into separate lineages - one from Portugal the other from Spain. There is some speculate other European water dog types (Poodles, French Barbet, Italian Lagotto) originally came from the Iberian stock, but I would like to see evidence of this..
Portuguese Water Dog and those in what was to become Spain, became the dogs that became known by locals as "Perro de aguas", "Turco Andaluz", "Perro de lanas", etc.. The name "Perro de Agua Español" (Spanish Water Dog) didn't come into use until sometime in the past recent decades when it became officially recognized as a breed. Likewise, the PWD was originally known as "Cao de Agua" (dog of water). They are two separate breeds as others have noted, and they came from the same ancient >cont.>>>
How can anyone say "there's no such thing as a Spanish Water Dog" or "Spanish Water Dog doesn't exist"?? That's as stupid as saying for example "The Dutch Shepherd Dog is the same as the German Shepherd"! (unless it's some conspiracy made up by Portuguese nationalists who are anti-Spain?)Water dog types have existed on both sides of the Iberian Peninsula well before Spain and Portugal became countries... Those in what is now Portugal became the <continued<<
okay so i know this was post in 07, but gezz people lay off, this person made a mistake naming the dog breed wrong gosh people do it all the time..I swear no one has respect these day.
11O4de Your are in a big mistake portugues dog and spanish water dog are the same this dog are from the peninsula hiberica and are the same I have two living in my houses.. you have a big mistake!!!!
HO please! PORTUGUESE WATER DOG! isn't SPANISH WATER DOG! He is PORTGUESEEEEE! Ony portuguese. Spain is diferent than portugal. Change the title! This is a big mistake!
These dogs have to have a common ancestry with Water Spaniels, Poodles, and the Barbet. I have done a post using your dogs, and paiting by George Stubbs called "A Water Spaniel." Compare the dog in that painting with the Spanish Water dog, and you can see that some of the British Water Spaniel breeds were actually of this type. Perhaps these were the ancestors of the more spaniel-like water spaniels that got absorbed into the retrievers in the nineteenth century.
Actually, an interesting fact about SWDs and PWDs. During the 70s, the PWD breed was in danger of disappearing. So breeders went into Spain and crossbred the tallest SWDs they could find into the breed to help it survive.
All those people you named are not DISCOVERERS. They were explorers, conquerers & at times some were actually an almost complete destructive intrusion of already known lands.
After the Portuguese discovered the unknown world, there was nothing unknown for the "Spaniards" to discover. They were left to look for Gold, the Fountain of Youth (Illusion), spread diseases, murder & to map & name known places in same cases RENAME what was already named to make it sound like it was a "Spanish" conquest.
Cuba won't ring a bell to you, but long before Castro existed, and long before Cristobala Colombo got the Island, there was a small town named Cuba in Portugal. It is curious to think that Colombo was born there and named the island after his hometown.
Also there are two distinct breeds of Portuguese Water Dogs also usually in 2 colors black or Brown. One great thing about one of the breeds is that they don't shed...so no hair all over the house.
Spanish discovered the new world...maybe you have a lot sick in your mind but this is the true: Alonso de Ojeda, Pedro de Valdivia, Cabeza de Vaca, Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, Pizarro, Cortes, Juan Sebastian el Cano (first man that travel around the world), Juan de la Cosa (first man that paint a map with america), Ponce de Leon. And why you say Cristobal Colon?..was italian man, no portuguese, liar.
The "Spanish" which WERE NOT EVEN SPANISH at that time, got to places in the World following the know how and routes that the Portuguese established long before them.
Most of their voyages they had to hire Portuguese captains to lead the way.
It is WELL PROVEN that "Colon" was not Italian. The only document that said he was Genoan has been clearly proven that it was FAKE. We don't even know his real name never mind who he was.
Yes they are from Portugal. These breed was helpful to Portuguese explorer for sending messages betweeen ships and to retrieve stuff from the water etc. Fishermen also used them to untangle fishnets at the bottom of the sea etc.
yeah, he's right, there are two breeds, they're similar but still different. still the SWD here looks more like a PWD.
PWD where used by fishermen, while the SWD is a herding dog. it's possible one of the breeds originated from the other (since their original country is pretty close and they're also so similar), but you can't tell which one since both where non-standard breeds that where only standardized very recently.
I have 2 SWDs in Scotland. The younger puppy is the aunt! They play in exactly the same way as the video. Completely different personalities but very similar behaviour. They are cheekily clever and like to bend the rules. The only other SWD i have seen is Ramon (Moke Lassoc de Ubrique For Hollutrix). He is the 6 month bitch's father and the 2 yr old dogs grandfather. I will post some videos soon.
I have two Spanish Water Dogs, Bella and Barca, who are brother and sister, and they are now 9 years old. They were from one of the first litters bred here in the UK, and they are wonderful. So playful, and very obedient. Would recommend to anyone. =)

Spanish discovered the New World? You mean they discovered the New World after the Portuguese and with Portuguese know how and Portuguese explorers?
Like Cristovam Colon, Estevao Gomes, Joao Cabrilho, Fernao de Magalhaes, etc .
