Colm Meaney and the character of Miles O'Brien was one of the best in TNG and also DS9. I don't know if it was Meaney's acting ability or the way the character was written, but he always seemed to be the most "real" of the ST characters--a personable guy you would like to have a drink with at the nearby bar or hang out with. He was an earthy yet practical man and not like the wusses the other characters were. A strong Irish guy. A natural leader. A real man's man!
I have found that chief O'Brian is the most respected and believeble chareters in this serires not only because my family is from Ireland but because he is more capable than anyone else through hard work, faith and dedication.
To the person who complained about the singing: They weren't supposed to be doing excellent singing, only putting their hearts in it. They were supposed to be starfleet officers, not folk singers.
I think this is one of the half-dozen or so most touching versions I've ever heard. Funny, I've never even *thought* about whether they *sang* particularly well or not...so their *acting* must've been fairly decent. (Or, as my college theater teacher used to say, "Watch my face, I'm dancing." ^_^)
Good heavens. Jewish AND Irish AND a Star Trek fan? ^___^
Same here. ^_^
(Admittedly I'm not *very* Jewish, except for my ancestry on my father's side being mostly Jewish, and I probably wouldn't know about "vey is mir" if it weren't for a Jewish friend online. But...still.)
Kitty (who has a mix of many ancestries...including but not limited to Jewish, German, English, Irish, Scottish, etc.) (they can all fight with each other ^_~).
Oh my glory, Mary Jane. I must be getting senile. How do I not remember this episode? Minstrel Boy was one my grandfather sang to me every year on St. Patrick's Day, along with a few other songs from the many years of the Troubles. Vey is mir!
Thanks for this. One of if not my all time favourite moment in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's just so human and there were few moments in TNG that touched me as much as this little scene did.
Miles Edward O'Brien became one of my favourite Star Trek characters because he was just a regular, salt-of-the-earth, working guy and family man. Definitely one of the most human humans in ST in my humble opinion because he just seemed like he could have easily been a 21st century guy too.
@Alan1701b I think that was intentional. He was a Chief Petty Officer, meaning he didn't go to the academy. He was an enlisted man, so appealed to those of us who were less refined than say Wesley Crusher ;)

Eh. Don't bother. They rewrite the character and we find out he's actually a Dominion spy (he's a shapeshifter) when he shoots Sisko in ops. It's pretty ridiculous. Other than that it's a great show. You should see it.
That's not true. It was a shapeshifter pretending to be O'Brien. And only one Episode.(Or small group of episodes, can't remember.) In DS9 O'Brien was all right.
Thx for posting...i have been looking for this song forever and had the tune in my head but could not find it...then i remember O'Brien singing it in one of the tng eps..Cheers

@piratebri LOL I am in total agreement.

@piratebri
Wesley Crusher wasn't supposed to be "refined", he was supposed to be young and innocent.
(I get your point, though.)

@KittyStarlight and here I was thinking Wesley was actually supposed to be torn apart by Klingons

@Alan1701b I liked him because he grew up about 15 minutes away from me. Go on the Meaney!
TehCheese 1 year ago
@TehCheese Cool. The guy should have something dedicated to him in Dublin. He's probably one of , if not THE, best actors to come out of Ireland.

Awful singing. They don't do this great song justice at all.

I'm pretty sure that the O'Brien that shot Sisko was a replacment and the Dominion had captured the real O'Brien but it's been awhile so I'm not sure
