Aimard is unbelievably good!! The pieces I find very interesting and challenging and a real great contribution to piano literature music . Ligeti is great, I think. Check his Requiem!!
Ligeti has found his absolutely great own answer (own answers!) to the questions of 20th century music. When knowing a bit about his life, his merits for modern music an music in general are even more respectable. I can only recommend listening to and reading about Ligeti!
Aimard is an excellent interpreter for his works, he masters the extreme difficulty of Ligeti's etudes without any problems and is hence able to focus on the music! Absolutely recommendable duo: Ligeti played by Aimard!
@thePartita I agree with you, Ligeti is just wonderful for his unusual textures, colors, and atmospheres, unfortunatly he's not esteemed by people in "conservatories" (I don't know if we say like that in engish!), anyway thank you for your answer, i'm going to ask my teacher to play "arc-en-ciel" etude, even if rythm in it scares me! I dream of playing the devil's staircase, but it seems to be really - too - hard.
I was in Warsaw walking at night and a huge lightning storm started and it rained so hard that the rainwater pooled knee-high. Automne en Varsovie reminds me of that.
Yes, if only. I played most of these etudes for a ballet choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon..they are very difficult to learn and to play...and some of them are a bit too Cznery like for me....I would prefer to spend my time learning beautiful music on the piano....
I completely disagree about "Ligeti = Czerny like"!
Besides, I find these etudes "beautiful". Beauty in the sense of deep and at the same time sounding well (listen to Automne - isn't this beautiful? What about Vertige, Arc en ciel, Fanfares...?)
To each his own...you are entitled to your opinion...and I am entitled to mine...I did play them...after all...
There is so much in the piano repertoire...that is more grateful...some of Ligeti's etudes are quite beautiful, and some are less..., I would not choose to play these in a concert....was requested to perform them for a particular ballet...
By the way, I am also playing his etudes - that is one of the reasons why I am so much into this stuff and why I am very much interested in Ligeti's music and life at the moment. His ideas behind his compositions are very interesting and the resulting music also is in my opinion.

@ddchil41 hello, i'd like to play a Ligeti etude for my medal, and i wonder, what's the most easy Ligeti etude, your mind? (sorry i'm not english) Thank you!
I would recommend getting the book of the Ligeti etudes..and looking through them to see which you would like to learn...The first one (sounds like Czerny)....doesn't lie well under the hand...there are better ones..but to each his own....Just purchase the entire volume...and go through them...
@maternelle01 The word "easy" is not appropriate in the context of Ligeti etudes :-)
Of course they are still on a different level of difficulty - my suggestion: Have a look at etude no.5 "Arc en ciel" (1st book), it is at least not so extremely fast and not so long as "Automne à Varsovie" for example.
I think pianists are a little too freaked out by Ligeti. I've been working through a few of these, and they are not nearly as challenging as the impression they leave. You said the thought of playing one makes you want to cry... well try one out, and work hard at it. Imagine how you'll feel if you actually learn one! Tears of JOY perhaps?
I would LOVE to work on one of these, but i'm 15, I have schoolwork, and I'm already learning Scriabin's 5th sonata, Grieg's concerto, and Chopin's op. 10, no. 4 etude, plus I enjoy having a life. Someday....
One of Ligeti's finest interpreters playing some of the most challenging piano music of the 20th. century, with absolutely brilliant cinematography. Thanks so much for posting !

@maternelle01 Don't be afraid of the rhythms in arc-en-ciel, this is going to be no problem once you really understood and felt it.
Yes, devils staircase is indeed very difficult, it does not only seem so... :)
