If you can aim, this weapon is soo useful in the Arena and VSH modes. This way you can help take down the other team/Saxton Hale and get your metal back.
@PheonyxImperius my other idea is that it should act like a portable dispenser, that is dispense metal every 5 seconds for a total of 400 metal when it becomes lvl3, should probably heal too. Shooting people whould cost metal but not give it back right away, instead, getting kills (with it or with the sentry) upgrades it up to level lvl3.
The Widowmaker made me a better player - not only with the Engineer, but with the Scout, Pyro, and even Soldier too. In return, when I play engineer it allows me to take down stuff I normally can't. I've taken down a heavy singlehandedly with the Widowmaker.
The buff the Widowmaker received (now only uses 30 metal per shot instead of 60) makes the weapon more forgiving, but it still forces you to take on TF2's learning curve. This weapon will make a man out of you whether you like it or not.
@PheonyxImperius I like it, it's cool. It's still a bad gun. The extra metal barely covers its own cost of use no matter what a good shot you are, and the lack of reload barely justifies exposing yourself like a weak heavy or soldier, it needed a buff but rather than making firing cheaper it should have rewarded good shooters better, I'd said, nerf it back to 60 metal per shot but let you reclaim up to 400 metal.
@rgzdev You said that the lack of reload is a bad thing... I don't see what you mean. You're not reloading, so that's less time running around helpless and more time dealing damage.
As for covering it's own cost, you need to get some good meatshots for that. It's practically useless for a standard engineer loadout - to get the most out of the Widowmaker you have to use the gunslinger. Most people find the gunslinger useless anyway, so the Widowmaker is not an upgrade from the shotgun.
@PheonyxImperius Oh no, lack of reloading is good, but staying out of cover is not when you have the health, speed and mobility of a humble engie. If you have good aim and play aggressively, you can break even in metal, but that's it, for all your effort.
The WM should let profit from your aim, let you keep any extra metal you get from shooting, like a metal overheal.
@rgzdev Still, if you're using the gunslinger you're already playing the class like a slower, bulkier scout. As long as you can deploy a mini-sentry, you can likely escape. A lot of people make the mistake of assuming the sentry is the main threat and attack it instead, others are too tempted by free points.
@PheonyxImperius but if you need to escape with the WM you likely can't build a minisentry, and the infinite amo and lack of reloading only helps if you never take cover and resupply and you have to get very close for it to work.
The old shotty gives you 32 shots which is more than enough to get to next amo crate, can be used at mid range, let's you keep your metal and has 6 consecutives shots before taking cover.
The WM is only excells at mincing distracted heavies.
@rgzdev If your aim is bad enough that at such close range you don't have enough metal to place a mini-sentry, then you kinda don't deserve to escape in the first place.
With any class, you have to know your limits, and no class and loadout emphasizes that more than a Gunslinger Engineer. Until you can get good enough meatshots to give you a net gain on metal, you need to play it safe and stick to picking off weakened targets. As for range, why are you using a shotgun from so far away?
@PheonyxImperius Because sever incompetence is the only reason to lose metal with the WM? What if the other player, you know, dodges? And the shotgun is effective at mid range, not as much as at close range, but at least you don't run out of ammo. Yes you need to know your limits, but the WM increases them and offers little in return.
@rgzdev If the other player dodges, then they know you're there. When playing a Gunslinger engineer, that's when you deploy a mini-sentry (if possible), cut your losses and get the hell out of dodge.
The Widowmaker is a bad gun on paper. I don't deny it. However a GOOD (I stress that word) player can make use of it. I've never had a problem with running out of metal.
(Continued - Youtube's policy of 500 characters max serves little point)
@rgzdev (continued from last post) In a game full of borderline OP weapons, the Widowmaker is quite a contrast. Like the Axestinguisher and Gunslinger before it, the Widowmaker emphasizes one counter-intuitive play style at the expense of an easier one.
Finally, I have a question. Have you actually used the Widowmaker, or are you just going by on-paper stats? As I said before, the Widowmaker doesn't necessarily shine on paper. I hated it until I actually got one, then I loved it.
@PheonyxImperius I have it, I like it, I troll the hell out of ctf_turbine with it; with no metal in that big room you kinda have to. And it is the only way to ambush a heavy as an engineer. But as soon as people catch up I need to retreat, with the shotgun I have *at least* 6 shots and 2 mini-sentries ready to make my escape. The WM forces me to retreat earlier so I stopped using it because the shotgun kills anything the same as the WM, except distracted heavies.
@rgzdev On the question, I was just checking. I run into a lot of people who don't like a weapon simply because it looks bad in its description.
As for when you have to retreat, I guess it ultimately boils down to playstyle. I tend to try and flank the enemy, then stick a mini-sentry in a really annoying spot and make a slow, fighting retreat. When my Sentry is destroyed, I usually have enough metal to build a second, either from some really good meatshots or an ammo crate. (continue)
@rgzdev (continued) Of course, if the enemy expects me to retreat or if I'm dealing with scouts, I'll rush them. It usually takes them by surprise. I also tend to use my pistol a lot more if I'm not close enough to get any good shots with the Widowmaker. I don't and will never use the Short Circuit, nor do I use the Wrangler. The first I don't use because it's just worthless (it's the only item I say no to without using), and the second because it just never really fit my playstyle.
@swarteman Yeah, the enemies are F2P. Thats true. The enemies, yeah, you know. The player, STAR, no, but yeah, the other team yeah, sure sure. But STAR has some weps and stuff yeah, but premium tho, got it in 2007 I guess, yeah..
I've just tried the widowmaker out for a bit since its been buffed and holy hell is it broken now. I find myself rarely having to reload, and sometimes go on a spree of about 10+ shots in a row, its amazing. A far shot will be about 15-30 damage so thats 1 shell back, a close shot around 85 damage so thats 2 shells right there, and a critial will refill your gun completey. And when you do run out of shells its almost quicker to find dropped ammo then it would be to reload the normal shotgun.
My first use of this gun was when it had 60 ammo usage and i found it useless because it always returned less then it used (like 30-40). Now that they lowered the ammo on im going to have to try it again. Im one combat engie thats not afraid to run straight up on a hvy, so not having to reload that might make things much easier xD
I have it, and I love it. I'm more of a defensive engie, so, I make a Level 3 Sentry and stay by it, but I love not having to reload my gun when there's a demo or soldier around the corner who is too fast for my sentry. My dispenser does the reloading for me.
I love my widow maker. For offrensive engy it's the only gun I use now. I also find I get a large number of ubers and kirtkriegs with it which is awsome. Most downsides are only downside's if you aren't good at aiming. The one thing I don't like about it (but that doesn't make it not the best offensive engy gun) is that you can't really spy check it and if a spy cloaks you probobly won't want to waste metal on finding him unless there is some lying around close by.
for those interested, use this on plr_hightower. on the part where you just go vertical for the final push stand on the cart and voila, unlimited shotgun to shot the enemy until you win.
@TheValiantBob I don't know about that, you can go there as heavy also, and you stil got the unlimited ammo. I've used the short circuit for last pushes, and had several rage messages from players for using that :p
The widow maker can be used nicely as a back up for protecting your sentry with. When ever I use it I actually gain metal from doing so which I use to repair my sentry back after breaking way to kill a spy or something.
The Widowmaker sounds like tactically it would be good for using alongside a dispenser and minisentries. I really should try using it since I have it.
Then again, my FPS is for crap so I suck with every weapon I use.
@tetraddison That's what I was saying, 30 for one shot up close to a Heavy, get more for more shots to fill your metal, so you can get a dispenser for more, metal that is.
Honestly, I've found this is a good weapon for defending an Engie nest. Close quarters means most of your shots hit if your relativly good at aiming, and the reclemation mechanic means that you can pretty much fire nonstop until your enemy drops.
The thing is, the Frontier Justice pretty much teaches you the same thing when using mini sentries. If your using the Gunslinger, your sentry has a horrible habit of getting destroyed and getting revenge crits are easy. Frontier Justice teaches you to better your aim because you won't want to waste those crits. Normal Engi could use this fine, but Justice is usually better for Gunslinger.
You play engie exactly like i do... so this video was perfect for me! i suppose now with the change to 30 metal this weapon is considerably more useful.
Got to disagree, I can clear a whole server with the widowmaker, also the sound is just glorious, thats why I love the widowmaker and the reserve shooter.
Right now, the Widowmaker is incredibly awesome. It's still better to carry around a pistol with it, considering that you always want to have metal to maintain your buildings, but that's not that huge drawback.
After the big update in 12 oct, this weapon became pretty good. Considering now you fire 30 metal, you can reserve that much metal and shoot people till you get 200 metal again
I was trying to use this weapon today and i find that it does make u think about where your shooting. I killed a heavy and the good thing is u dont need to reload so i constantly shot him
Well good news for the Widowmaker, in the Beta, it costs 30 metal to shoot rather than 60. Dunno if the change will apply in the main game, but it's something.
I just don't like this shotgun, I like everything but the mechanics. I mean it's a cool idea but you can flat out miss to lag and then that's 60 metal out of your pocket. I wish I could just use this model and sound over the regular shotgun, it's so neat.
Think about it man! only 30 metal for each shot meaning you can using at medium range without having to take careful aim, basic damage will allow you to shoot constantly without giving a second thought! 50 metal per shot would make it a nice even 4 shots and make it more possible to get hits that give you enough metal.
@cloftus4 bud, the only way this will become OP is if it gets crits, like the frontier justice. do u want this thing to suck? 50 metal would suck, cuz its likely you wont do 50 damage, let alone 30 damage, especially considering that most people who play this dont hav a great hit scan. -30 metal per shot would make it a great beginner weapon, which the deus-ex update was trying to do. so rly, this wont be OP. you are already making a sacrifice using metal to shoot your gun in the first place!
Think about it! Up close the shotgun reachs aroun 85 damage, with 50 that would make the it easy enough but -30 would make it take no effort whatsoever, and who says the Dues Ex weapons are for beginners?
I think the widowmaker is used to pressure a opponent since reloading in tf2 is quite a big thing and as long as you have a good aim and close range it is extremely succesful (This Is My Opinion By The Way) however it would be much better if the damage firing rate or if it takes less metal to fire a shot this weapon would be much more useful
Miserable? That's how someone with bad aim describes it, I've killed many many people with. I've even gone on multi kill raids away from my mini sentry using it, so long as you have good aim and good timing, you can outclass nearly anyone.
@cloftus4 Having only 3 shots and putting both yourself and your team in danger or losing/dying just to get metal is not that good.You could rather use the default shotgun and get 6 shots.
@ThisISaUserName1337 couldnt u said once more now ? Oo I cant hear a shit when he is talking. And im not asking for HUD, im asking for hit sound dickhead. I wont watch every video over and over again to find where is he saying that...
@SandyBallizization No NO! :D :D you got it wrong. Its just that i watched a lot of his videos and cant imaging how he looks like. Is he fat is he skinny, glasses ? I dont know .
does any one know if that i buy the game on disk, it will run better? it runs like 20-30 fps with more than 15 people when im using the f2p download. In APB people say that the game ran better on the disk and not the f2p, same applys here?
It seems like the Conniver's Kunai for the Engineer. A Weapon which if you've got enough skill or luck it has no downsides, but it's so hard to have that amount of skill.
Im So Jealous About your computer it had a great grapics card you can play games without lag

Right now, the Widowmaker is incredibly awesome. It's still better to carry around a pistol with it, considering that you always want to have metal to maintain your buildings, but that's not that huge drawback.
stalk8r 4 months ago
sometimes i wish that you could overheal metal with the widowmaker

30 metal per shot .. that would be a good partner of aggressive engineer!
teagod2004 4 months ago
After the big update in 12 oct, this weapon became pretty good. Considering now you fire 30 metal, you can reserve that much metal and shoot people till you get 200 metal again
benjamin8846 4 months ago
@benjamin8846 still u are still using metal !! 30

Well good news for the Widowmaker, in the Beta, it costs 30 metal to shoot rather than 60. Dunno if the change will apply in the main game, but it's something.
OneWithTheNight 5 months ago
I just don't like this shotgun, I like everything but the mechanics. I mean it's a cool idea but you can flat out miss to lag and then that's 60 metal out of your pocket. I wish I could just use this model and sound over the regular shotgun, it's so neat.
Snotnarok 5 months ago
Okay, I will use the Widowmaker with Southern Hospitality... stand next with the dispenser... protecting the sentry and waiting for Spies...
maxisacrace 5 months ago
@maxisacrace Southern Hospitality is terrible because of weakness to Pyros
davidajmartinez 5 months ago
@davidajmartinez Thanks for the information...
maxisacrace 4 months ago
god im glad it will only take -30 metal to shoot this
Gxrocks123 5 months ago
@Gxrocks123
That will amke it OP, 60 is very good as it is. 50 would be good, 60 is ok and anything below 50 would be way to easy to use
cloftus4 5 months ago
@cloftus4 not really.
Gxrocks123 5 months ago
@Gxrocks123
Think about it man! only 30 metal for each shot meaning you can using at medium range without having to take careful aim, basic damage will allow you to shoot constantly without giving a second thought! 50 metal per shot would make it a nice even 4 shots and make it more possible to get hits that give you enough metal.
cloftus4 5 months ago
@cloftus4 bud, the only way this will become OP is if it gets crits, like the frontier justice. do u want this thing to suck? 50 metal would suck, cuz its likely you wont do 50 damage, let alone 30 damage, especially considering that most people who play this dont hav a great hit scan. -30 metal per shot would make it a great beginner weapon, which the deus-ex update was trying to do. so rly, this wont be OP. you are already making a sacrifice using metal to shoot your gun in the first place!
Gxrocks123 4 months ago
@Gxrocks123 also, most people use this from mid-range, which wont do that much damage at all.
Gxrocks123 4 months ago
@Gxrocks123
Think about it! Up close the shotgun reachs aroun 85 damage, with 50 that would make the it easy enough but -30 would make it take no effort whatsoever, and who says the Dues Ex weapons are for beginners?
cloftus4 4 months ago
is that a wicky cap
Crazyhardcoredude1 5 months ago
in beta it only takes 30 ammo to fire ITS AWSOME
Mitsywolfe 5 months ago
increase the damage on the widowmaker would make it more balanced.
YenYenYenYenYenYen 5 months ago
still prefer frontier justice!
purpleownz176 5 months ago
I think the widowmaker is used to pressure a opponent since reloading in tf2 is quite a big thing and as long as you have a good aim and close range it is extremely succesful (This Is My Opinion By The Way) however it would be much better if the damage firing rate or if it takes less metal to fire a shot this weapon would be much more useful
CrackyourskullBitch 5 months ago
Miserable weapon.
Alex1421001 5 months ago
@Alex1421001
Miserable? That's how someone with bad aim describes it, I've killed many many people with. I've even gone on multi kill raids away from my mini sentry using it, so long as you have good aim and good timing, you can outclass nearly anyone.
cloftus4 5 months ago
@cloftus4 Still needs some balancing.
Alex1421001 5 months ago
@Alex1421001
I admit 50 metal per shot would be good, but 60 still works
cloftus4 5 months ago
@cloftus4 Having only 3 shots and putting both yourself and your team in danger or losing/dying just to get metal is not that good.You could rather use the default shotgun and get 6 shots.
Alex1421001 5 months ago
My meatshots are augmented.

How do you like this as compared to the Frontier Justice? That primary seems more well suited to the combat engie playstyle

Just wondering, do you think playing on a no-spread server makes the widowmaker better? (reliable shotgun pellet patterns and all).

I think this weapon isn't meant for combat engies, more along the idea of engies who sit back with their fully upgraded buildings.

Also, i can use widowmaker really well, but frontier justice is still the best.
Puddimans 5 months ago
does any one know if that i buy the game on disk, it will run better? it runs like 20-30 fps with more than 15 people when im using the f2p download. In APB people say that the game ran better on the disk and not the f2p, same applys here?
B52JOE 5 months ago
Maybe reduce the spread of it a bit so the pellets are more accurate.
Undechypheredcrab 5 months ago
i'd say they should either implement the two changes in the top two comments, or mke it do more damage so that you get more metal back.

Mortipede 5 months ago
Use your pistol at all times, until you are in meatshot range.
I never use the regular shotgun most of the time anyways, you get so much ammo with your pistol that it doesn't really matter.

It seems like the Conniver's Kunai for the Engineer. A Weapon which if you've got enough skill or luck it has no downsides, but it's so hard to have that amount of skill.
WoodenZigzagoon 5 months ago
I suggest using it in Payload or Payload Race.
Of course, in Payload I suggest you PUSH the cart and use it.
The Ammo you get from the cart does make this weapon a bit more worth while.
