  • Great tune but sorry to say my opinion only and we all know about opinions Keith Carlock does not do it for me on this tune , shuffles Ok but dynamics and just overall feel of how he executes this tune seems it drags

  • 5:38... oh man...those horns.... eargasm

  • The original version of this tune was not so much produced as it was sculpted. Every single bar is different, accents that change, a vibraphone comping harmony, early synth use, horn calls that always add complexity, double/triple tracked vocals, and razor sharp crisp releases. It is a masterpiece of the studio. Its funny how the live performances seem quite empty in comparison after listening to Aja for over 30 years, particularly at this more leisurely tempo that seems to even slow down.

  • I love Steely Dan but does Becker have to continually noodle? Sorry folks. Honestly, I'm a huge fan. But the songs were great the way they were. If he has to play all the time then get rid of the other guitarist (who is outstanding) and take full responsability for the guitar duties. Even though he's hiding somewhat behind that anemic Strat tone it's still annoying. All those clashing notes when everyone starts noddling just ruin it.

Love ST. Don't fix it (see "noodle") if it aint broke.

  • @72911RS yeah I hear you on that one. Becker is great but it's a bit over the top sometimes.

  • Cornelius Bumpus RIP

  • Walter Becker is shredding! He usually hides behind the other guitarist.

  • Goddamn they are thee shit!!!!

  • haha i totally loved how the black chick was jammin out with the guitar solo, i would of totally done the same if i was on stage with the one an only legdend, stelly dan will never die he was also a perfectionist when it came to his music and all his songs tell a story, keep rocken on.steely dan, you will be missed when you go

  • awesome group with no weak tracks, but my favs are deacon blues, caves, kid charl, and this.

  • I'm like TheRorybteaker... I love them all !!!

  • Was that Jon Herrington at the end with that nifty run, with WB playing a bit on top?

  • chill after chill runs down my spine.

  • when I heard this live at Fox theater up in Detroit, it sent chills across me, just like the first time I heard it, It's a song about finally going back to New York, I only lived there for three years, but the east coast has a sense of belonging, it's where my whole family is from (and mostly still is) I have no roots in Michigan, but it maybe where I live for the rest of my life, I need to die in Jersey though, after seeing Greenwich Village one last time.

  • Donald Fagan likes the F-Sharp note in his music. What an amazing and unique band!! No band can match this quality of imagination and lyrics like this band!! A band ahead of its time!!!

  • One of the best! I was reminded of this song when one of the questions in my exam mentioned about Odyssey and his story..

  • so cool(・∀・)

  • If you notice, the studio version has the words: "she serves the smooth retsina" (an ancient Greek or Roman wine - google it), whereas this live version has "she soothes the smooth patina" (in which 'patina' refers to a "finish" of sorts, antiquated gun barrels or furniture that that is aged, with a certain character. Smart mofos! Undoubtedly! ;)

  • those horns after the last vocals.....shmexy

  • I find it amazing how, as the show progresses, Fagen's singing improves, specially doing the ensemble work with the background singers.

Agree with the 'groovemeister' comment! Different frorm the album, but cooooler, more open.

  • always and ever a musician's band, one of the greatest treasures of american electric music!

  • great great guitar work

  • Probably my favorite of all tunes by SD. Remember SD emerged from the studio to play live in 2003. They were studio Rats. Nonetheless. I wish they played live extensively prior too! SD always had top tier session musicians for all albums. Also they played a better/faster version at home when they played this at Blossom Music Center. D Fagans parents live near me. They go to Corky and Lenny's alot on Chagrin BLvd.

  • Love Becker's improv but 4:43 seems to just.. not work

  • @ColmIncendinall I agree.... weird note choice... i wonder if his hand was just not where he thought it would be.... that happens to all of us from time to time haha.

  • @BadTanLines i think he actually meant to do it, but it sounds like it was floating along dreamy and next minute its like diminished and evil or something :/ then fagen came back in and i just burst out laughin... Weird!!

  • @ColmIncendinall

I see what you mean, but by the 'rules of improvisation', it was allowable and, or so I thought, worked in a kinda discordant way.

  • All there GREAT, OUTRAGEOUS TUNES BY sd AND THEY WIN A GRAMMY FOR 'Two Against Nature'. Well, 'Cousin Dupree' is the finest song on that album, but why that album? Because they got out of re-hab and won the lifetime achievement award? I dunno. I don't get it. They should've won a long time back!

  • they don't make music like this anymore. I hope someone will in the future... Caves of Altamira, Rikki and my fav Any World.

  • @lukemanify They do, it's just that it doesn't have the ass and tit's factor, It's actual music, so it's ignored.

  • @lukemanify search ministers of cool. they're similar

  • The lady in the middle brings on my erectile dysfunction.

  • @23moksha X'D

  • THree people are fucking tone deaf.

  • Love it!

  • I have "Aja" in my car's CD player. I listen to it every day on my way to work and I no longer need to buy coffee before I start work! Steely Dan keeps me going until my first coffee break! How good is that? "Home at Last" even made me happy to go to work on Friday!

  • good music for thesoul.from marit norway

  • Let's write a blues about Ulisses... in Donald Fagen words... cool

  • The bass on the studio version is ten times better!

  • Nice job guys.

  • How do you pick a favorite SD song, I can't even pick a top ten, I love them all.

  • @TheRorybreaker how rue!!

  • @TheRorybreaker To me Haitian Divorce and My Old School will always be extra special.

  • How do you film Home at Last live and show everybody but the drummer (until the end)? The drum beat is integral to this song.

  • This music is BY FAR the most soulful music I've ever heard and I've never grown tired of it. Only one question I have: who is that beautiful backup singer in the middle? She's a very nice addition for the senses.

  • Comment removed

  • Backing vocalist in the center at 1:40.....mmmm.

  • outstanding group the best ever had the pleasure to experience their brillant, explosive quality

  • outstanding group the best ever

  • I always liked Becker's solos. The clean tones, linear playing with odd notes and chunky sounds thrown in. Anyone know what kind of Strat that is? Anderson?

  • The two people who put this video as "Thumbs Down" obviously have NO taste for REAL music!

  • wake up - Walter aint the singer - but the half creation. dudes cool as Donald

  • cool just cool

  • Is there ANY bad Steely Dan song out there? Never found one.

  • Comment removed

  • @The2BallisticBrother The Last Mall, Slang of Ages, Book of Liars. Way too many cheesy lyrics in those songs. But that's about it

  • @ilikeyguitar only agree with Slang of Ages, because Becker simply isn't a Steely Dan singer

  • @The2BallisticBrother I don't really like "Can't Buy a Thrill Much". All of their best stuff is from "Katy Lied" forward...

  • they like the george lucas's of music

  • @aaronamccoy I would say that they're the Stanley Kubrick of music :-)

  • There can never be a better band than Steely Dan. Their music is the music of kings the heartbeat of jazz. if you listen closely you can hear the rainbow of sound. Bowled over fantastic music that will be played in eternity. Keep on writing guys Thank God for your talent.

  • this should have 1,000,000 views by now... wtf?

  • Always loved this song!

  • Walter Becker (Guitarist ) is up there with Eric Clapton - So Smooth, it just flows for them and I am a big Steely Dan fan since I was about 12, have all their albums, well c.d's now and never lose my respect and perfection for them. Ju xxx

  • this would be so much better if walter becker didn't noodle over the entire song! it drives me crazy. he used to have such awesome solos like the studio version of this, pretzel logic, bad sneakers. and black friday. what has happened mr. becker

  • @ilikeyguitar W. & D. are over 60. I ask myself where are the new groups in the vain of S.D.? The old groups like S.D. are all going on the road to bring good music to the masses. They have some very good musicians in these videos but Walter & Don are the linchpins so why don't the young guys bring some new stuff?

  • The horn section on this piece are KILLIN'!!!

  • I am home.. This song makes me remember the times of youth and splendor...home at last!

  • i love how when fagen starts singing, his head is surrounded by all those colors, like hes a god in the sky haha. which he IS :D

  • @kell1reilly2 He reminds me of Ray Charles who had this kind of tick when he was playing.

  • @nor888vast695 u mean like with the whole head shaking & his body movements?

  • Steely Dan always at their best.......

  • R.I.P. Cornelius Bumpus! One of the true artists playing an instrument.

  • I like this version better than the original Aja recording. It's alittle slower that non the record and has more of a bluesy feel.

  • My favorite tune from the awesome "Aja" album!

  • Wow, the live version of THIS? Love it.

  • I have been a fan since high school (35 yrs) ago and this is probably my favorite song. When I listen to this song it seems like everything in the world is OK.

  • Carolyn Leonhart is the middle backup singer on this. Check out some of her own CDs. The woman is amazing!

  • @jimpenchant -Absolutely agree.Great great jazz singer.And soul,rock,etc

  • saw them in concert twice, they are blistering. theres a reason bar bands dont cover steely dan songs.., baffling chord structures, complex melody lines, tricky bass lines, difficult harmonies...do it wrong it sounds like curdled shit, do it right it sounds majestic. This aint "Smoke on the Water". Its beautiful jazz rock fusion. respect to The Dan.

  • GREAT!

  • well my dad's a big fan, and i wanna surprise him with me playing this song on guitar next time he's over here. Well now that you mention doobies...When i was young I used to hear this music all the time in the car. My dad's never smoked, but now that im older, and an experienced smoker, i can see that, ironically, my dads favorite music is clearly inspired by long bouts of smoking maui. it has this introspective air that you sometimes get when smoking.

  • I've seen this a few times live and it's a highlight, partly because it falls right in the middle of DF's vocal range.

  • Harold.....work with me here, lol....i truly think that youth has no clue how good this is....

  • Beautiful piece of music

  • Nice to see Walter has learned a bit more Guitar..well done mate..

  • Damn! Those sixths after the chorus bring tears to my eyes every time

  • His lips are massive!

  • I love how they changed the rhythm of the original - when you're ready to sing along in the first chorus you discover you have to wait just a lil' bit )))

  • In over 35 years of being a fan, this is one of my absolute favorite SD tunes.

  • from the album I've listened to more than any other...superb. first band to get me listening to things other than straight rock type chords. so cool

  • has anyone else tried watching cat bloopers while listening to this? needless to say, i heartily recommend it xP

  • Best of The Best -- Fagen Rules

  • Beautiful Jazz/ Rock fusion. Love it!!!!

  • I love Walter Becker's soloing. This time around at the very end of the main solo (4 note hit sequence) he strayed and hit a couple blue notes. "Jazz" ;-) I'm such a fan of the album version of the solo I couldn't help but notice.

  • this one I think I overlooked over the years, but thankfully have rediscovered...gorgeous horn lines ,sublime shuffle, solid vocals... SD has always inspired me and continues to do so...

  • Love Carlock's endless groove on this tune. What a groovemeister!

  • @chungiemunchin that's actually bernard purdy's shuffle.you can also hear it in led zeppelin's fool in the rain.bernard shaw is probably one of the most recorded drummers in history.

  • The really nice thing about his music is that while it appeals to a wide audience (thus Becker and Fagens' well earned riches), it is sophisticated enough to support two guys as old as these two guys, performing for an audience and they don't look ridiculous doing it. I put them in the same category as Duke Ellington although I am sure both B and F would take issue with that statement given their respect for the Duke!

  • The EPITOMY OF MUSIC it dosn't get any better

  • Amazing performance!

  • haha i love those background singers....you seldom see them doing their own dancin thing like that....

  • god i fuckin love SD

  • Had to learn this on the piano! Fantastic song :D

  • Surely the opening brass riffs must have been inspired by Nat Adderley's composition "Jive Samba".

  • Odysseus obviously loved Steely Dan

  • It is beautiful to see musicians that not only compose such masterpieces such as this, but also that the same musicians care so meticulously about live sound quality.

    These men are true musicians.

  • Those first chords send a chill up my spine.

  • going to see these guys 11/10/09 cant wait to hear how they do this one!

    !

  • i use to smoke doobies to this

  • @samanthakespinoza Yes indeed, I remember back in the day when I was on the road alot. This was my song when I was on the road late @ nite coming back home! Great song. Got a chance to see them in Vegas.....EXCELLENT SHOW!! GREAT MUSICIANS!!!!

  • @samanthakespinoza

I think that's the only thing most of us did when we listened to Steely Dan. What beautiful times those were. Now it's a glass of chardonnay if I'm lucky. Someday when I retire...I'll fire one up!!! ha! ha!

  • @samanthakespinoza i still smoke doobies to this

  • @samanthakespinoza

    i still do

  • @samanthakespinoza You know what's really funny? The fact that I didn't post this because: A.) I was born in 1994, and B.) I have a weird feeling that my dad or one of his friends may have posted this while unkowingly being signed into my YT account. Which makes this situation that much funnier. I did grow up on this music, however =]

  • @samanthakespinoza You and everyone else

  • @samanthakespinoza Why'd you stop?

  • @samanthakespinoza I am right now to it bud!

  • @samanthakespinoza i still do... :)

  • Outstanding song from an unbelievable album. Thanks or posting!

  • Glad to see that Walter Becker is still alive and well and able to shred like that after those years back in the day of the horrible leg injury and the chasing of the dragon.

  • My grandson is watching with me (I let him stay up late, Bad Grandma!). He just said, 'That man makes creepy-crawlers on the guitar!' LOL Yeah, I think he's right.

  • smart kid :)

  • Fagen has crossed over into troll land...great song though

  • woahh I just had a musical orgasm. Becker is damn crazy in this song...

    Good show.

  • That's gotta suck lugging that key-tar around on stage. That thing has got to weight 30+ pounds.

  • It's killing me now that I just read an online review for the 9/4 Internet Request show in Chicago, and seeing they played this song that night! I was so saddened that I was not able to make that show that night, since me and a friend of mine couldn't find tickets in the price range we were hoping for. :(

So happy someone uploaded this, since I continue to hold out hope that one day I get to a Steely Dan show....

  • There is a documentary on the making of the album "Aja," the album that contains the original version of this song.

Bernard Purdie was the original (studio) drummer, and he came up with the shuffle drum beat, not as obvious here on the live version. At the time he was one of the most in-demand studio drummers around.

"Aja" is a masterpiece as it combines the best songwriters (Fagen + Becker) with the best studio musicians at that time. Winning formula - 32 years and still amazing.

  • this drummer is great, but he ain't no Purdie

  • Purdie is a monster player many many a great tracks he has recorded w/ his shuffles & laid back style.. he's funny quite a personality..

  • lol another big bernie fan

    :)

  • SAW them they rocked this like no other! destroyed this version

Fagen's vocals were spot on! and the band was unreal

  • Look at those horn players, playing it note for note, exatcly the way they were told.

  • They wrote part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank God for Steely Dan. I LOVE THEM.

    bt

  • lets make A mooovie

  • ...I guess that I'm the..lucky one....

  • great musicianship... to be able to play live to that standard, just excellent.

  • I saw them live at the ARLINGTON in Santa Barbara,

    EPIC, Life Changing.

  • for Ridiculous -

    How was your life changed?

  • Saw them do this song, and the rest of the AJA album two weeks ago in NYC. Don't have the words to describe how great a show it was......

  • The Aja album is a masterpiece. With all the incredible tunes it contains, it's near impossible to choose a favorite one. However, if I absolutely HAD to do so, THIS would be it.

  • "Steely Dan is the shit."

If you mean "Shit" as good, then they are the stinkiest wettest slimiest just slipped in it and no way to wash it off kind of shit.

And i mean that in the best possible way. I've been a fan since ever.

  • This is not a song, this is a hymn!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Why does this only have 53k views? Its a fine video - thanks!

  • I'm making a Youtube warm-up for the Steely Dan gig of this evening, in Rome...

  • Sure he loves to noodle, but... I dunno how this sounds, but... I love his noodles!

  • Almost makes you want to give up being a musician because it's quite impossible to write a song this good, and then find players to make it sound this good.

    Steely Dan is the shit.

  • @TheRumptonTrio o.O Played this chord combination by the age of 5 without even knowing the track.... Isn't that hard imo

  • @GrafPsychofarmaca

Good for you, bro. Please point out to me which one of the musicians onstage you are next time Steely Dan is on tour.

    Grab a cookie for yourself.

  • @TheHallzer Yeah.

Grab a book if you have to read comments on the 2nd page.

  • wel put!

  • i mean well. :D

  • Yes!!

  • Amazing. A bit slower than the record but who cares. Magnificent!

  • cant git mo betta than this, this is da kind jazz 4 sure

  • Becker sure loves to noodle doesn't he ....

  • his solos are so profound.

  • Steely is the truth. Period.

  • classic groove !!! ... but not quite the same without bernard purdie driving the beat

  • this is obviously amazing, but does anyone else think it seems a little too slow compared to the record, and seems to not groove as well like this???

  • Seems this piece highlights how well Fagen works at blending with the background singers in the chorus.

  • Isn't Pine Knob called DTE Theater now? Nice video!

  • Yea named after the stupid electric utility co

  • Ah... but I have some really good memories of shows at Pine Knob, even if DTE is a silly name! And it is a silly name.

  • love this SD song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A Norwegian rap group samled this song on their first single. but they had to chage it...
