Bruce Lee as the inspiration behind Liu Kang obviously, Cynthia Rothrock who played China O'Brian in the mid 80's inspired the Sonya Blade character. This is all in relation to MK1.

China was taken advantage of for a long time by the West (i do believe they were called the Sick Men of Asia in real life) so they struggled w/ a sort of inferiority complex for a while. However in modern times, they're getting their revenge....

In my opinion it just makes Chinese film-makers look a bit arrogant. I'm not trying to justify the atrocities that were committed in WW2 (I'm German so I know a bit about remembering history) but I thought we were long past trying to one up each other based on old grievances, especially through martial arts.
