  • WHY WAS THIS NEVER MADE FOR THE PUBLIC? It would sell way better than the 2-wheel Segway.

  • Very cool. Great job segway. Would love to see SideDriver wheels on this. ;) wwwDOTsidedriverDOTcom

  • i have seen this on discovery channel

  • quiero uno

  • do some tricks

  • i want one where can u get one ?

  • It appears to better than an ATV in several ways, its quiet, light weight and you can pop a wheelie!

That thing looks awesome, I want one.

  • why not just get an atv?

  • where can I buy it and how much does it cost?

  • excellent!! My disabled son would love this as he cant ride a regular bike!

  • I want to like this, but I can't help but think that this device is just a bicycle for lazy people!

  • actually, the quad is what the seg should look like :/

  • wher can i buy it>???

i need one its well cool.

  • how much is that thing cost

    ??

  • It was released to the public about 7 years ago and has done nothing but become one of the biggest punchlines of the decade. There are definitely uses for it, such as helping people who otherwise couldn't walk or drive get around short distances, but they're just not practical in a lot of areas. A number of large cities have banned them from being used on sidewalks, which is what they were intended for, due to safety concerns. It's the "IT" in shit.

  • wow FaeXylona you are so lame for writing that

  • Thanks. I really excel at being lame, but what part of the message was lame. Because I did not write the chain letter. Anyways, thank you for the lovely complement. You may do it any time.

  • im not critisisng but y do u send people that crap , u do know it isnt true

  • That is ok. The reason why I send it is due to the luck I had during that time. I just kinda panicked, and this was the result.

  • have u got facebook

  • I think it's cool. It looks like only the rear wheels drive the machine and the steering controls cause the rear wheels to independently rotate in order to turn it. I would like to know the max range of it on a paved surface. Although I highly doubt it would be allowed on sidewalks or the road.

  • Does the Centaur go faster than 12 mph, or is the video speeded up for sales purposes? Are Segways and Centaurs noisy like this video, or is the whirring, whizzing acceleration noise just for hype?

  • I think in some parts the video was speeded up, not by much though.

As for the sounds I think they're pretty "real" (Is that the word?).

  • the centaur went about 20 for testing so i dont know.

  • 20mph and it'd cost $35,000 if they made it. It's got no name anymore (Centaur was trademarked) and only two exist. One's at Innoventions in Epcot.

  • Why the hell dont they mass produce this already?? They announced the prototype in like 2004. I'd buy it in a second if it didnt cost an arm & leg.

  • zachlupton:

Why would you say that to me, besides the fact that you are just an obnoxious 17 year-old kid?

I made a few statements that are undeniably true about this 4-wheeled Segway as being unnecessary for any practical application that anyone can come up with.

Can you come up with a use for this type of Segway that isn't already being filled just as well by existing vehicles?

Your dad must be an unemployed Segway salesman and as a result you have some anger issues to deal with.

  • look dude, i dont care if you call me an obnoxious 17 year old, but i do care about what you said about this eco-friendly machine. it happens to be that my grandfather is the co-chairman of Segway LLC Innovation. so again go fuck yourself

  • hey neil. stfu

  • I'm surprised at how many people are dismissing this thing as utterly pointless... I find it neat, myself. Even if it's not the most important piece of transportation today, it could be a bridge to plenty of interesting inventions in the future.

  • I guess I really don't see the point of a 4-wheeled Segway. A.T.V.s have already solved the problem of pulling into a tight spot and needing to pull back out - it's called a REVERSE GEAR!!!

Leave it up to some genius to come up with a high-tech solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

  • This would be even better if it could scissor up into a seated version of the original.

  • Seems like if it had 4 wheel drive it could really climb... Pivoting on the back wheels would be great if you could use the front wheels too...

  • Imagine the military uses for this, silent -practically, compared to a quad bike- as in Special Forces use, speedy arrival and exit to a carrier vehicle, lighweight, and think of the fun those guys would have arsing about on them.

  • Why don't they sell these? They would make a killing. You're lucky I don't have the patent for this. I'd be rich!

  • DUDE! I want one! Thats wicked!

  • You're either jealous or stupid.

    1) It's electric.

    2) It can pretty much pivot on a dime in a tight spot, look how he pivots inside the warehouse between boxes (56 seconds into video)

    3) Some warehouses may use this as an alternative to golf carts, as well as big corporations. Oh wait, Segway may have taken that market share. I'd bet that this is more stable on constant 2 wheel riding as opposed to your quad.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, you may be both - probably are. :)

Never said it was news or not.

But the application of the vehicle for ITS TYPE is news.

You never addressed the issue of pivoting on a dime, unlike your quad.

"It's a solution looking for a problem" <---Who hasn't heard that line before, especially those who like to knock electric.

Enjoy your gas guzzling quad, this baby looks way more fun. :)

  • Comment removed

  • That's nice.

Regardless, the quad-bike won't do most of the stuff this Centaur will do. Back to your original comment.

    Leaving it at that.

  • Comment removed

  • Did you not notice how much fun that looked?... then again, a segway is already a few grand which I suppose you could just get an ATV at that point.

  • TheMangetout:

    "It's a solution looking for a problem."

I think you are right. This invention is about as useless as tits on a boar.

You know what beats this thing all to hell for being energy efficient, quiet, and transports people around warehouses, factories, parks, and goes in and out of tight places real easy?

    A BICYCLE.

  • But it's like an ATV, you don't have to balance it.

  • bocado:

"It can pretty much pivot on a dime in a tight spot"

Why bother to pivot, why not just put the thing in reverse and back out??? I think they have had vehicles that already have a reverse gear for about the last hundred years haven't they?

Electric is not a new idea either, that one is also close to a century old.

In short, maybe you and the inventor of this thing are the stupid ones.

  • shut the fuck up quads r fun but off road so this will be fun on the road its basiclly the same thing but ones for off road and the other is on the road comprende dumb ass?

  • They should equip it with an four wheel drive

  • i hav an electric scooter....but i would replace this with it in a heartbeat.....to bad they arnt being produced......yet

  • i mean replace it with this in a heartbeat not the other way around...this thing is way cooler

  • I think this would be a fun way to commute to work. Especially with the traffic in my area. I would certainly get to work faster...and in style. :-)

  • What's the advantage to - let's say - a Mountain Bike?

Except that you grow fat and ugly?

    Can cope with less terrain?

    Are slower?

    Need more space?

    Have to recharge?

    Are barred from narrow width?

  • How long can the battery last ? 2 hours? 3 hours?

  • segway does not yet even have plans of producing them commercially. The centaur so far is all just concept. But my guess is that within the next 5 years the centaur will be available to purchase.

and the comment below by mathiastheok. Cops know what segways are, they were among the first to use them in public. You would not have to tell them to piss of because its electric power. they know already. And if you told a cop to piss off... you probably wouldnt be riding the segway for much longer

  • It goes so fast :|:| I can't imagine the Xcentaur xD

  • Id love to take it to the park and run it around, and then tell the cop to piss of as its battery powered! Green Toys are getting cooler and cooler!

  • nope, an actual Segway production. Unfortunately, their not producing them yet. still, I'd jump for this over any HT, no matter the cost.

It was featured in the November 2004 issue of PopSci, but this is the first video I've seen of it. Looks even better than in the magazine. great vid
