Hack-a-shaq SHOULD be legal. If Shaq could shoot 50%, nobody would care. How can you compete when there is nobody else to ever live who is as big and good as shaq? You find a weakness, and exploit it. That is free-throw. You have to be able to compete with the most dominant force in sports history!
It's very simple: learn to sink the free throws, they'll stop to do the hack-a-shaq. It's bad for the game? Fuck that, I find insulting that Shaq had won millions of dollars and couldn't make a decent amount of free throws.
lucky for the spurs that shaq is a patient and smart man, at least enough to not go on a rampage as everyone probably would want to...this is annoying tactic...
I would rather say that it is a disgrace to the game that some centers don't practice free throw shooting,so they shoot like 56%.To say that this is a disgrace to the game, then the same thing is when teams call a timeout to inbound from the half-court.
I actually like this strategy. It's beautiful because it's a demonstration of wisdom. People hate this is because they cannot come up with this smart play :) thumbs up if you agree
@MrCiguma if he hit free thorws, they wouldnt foul him so what really runing the game is his lack of skill....a skill every damn person who every shot a damn ball has.
@willieg54 This is not about Shaq missing free throws. The lack of skill, it isn't like Shaq is one of the top 10 centers of all time... I still think that this shouldn't be allowed, even though it's partly Shaq's fault. I think it should be a T. I just hope they don't start doing this on e.g. Howard.
Okay, I'm confused. Can anyone answer me? I was wondering why all teams don't do this. Teams foul other teams in the last 25 seconds of the game if they're losing, but they always foul the ball handler. The ball handler then goes to the line. Why don't they foul someone without the ball like a bad FT% center for example? For example: It is 95-91, 20 secs on the clock. Winning team's ball handler gets fouled at put to the line (usually makes both). Why don't they foul the center without the ball?
@iN31L under two minutes left the ball is giving to whomever the team wants to shoot it if they are not the ball handler.
That ruling may have changed. I haven't been keeping track of the league for a few years and these rule changes are mostly designed to give the offensive player an advantage. (This is done, if I'm correct, to pad the points to increase tv ratings, etc.)
I'm sure someone will correct me. I'm a Blazer fan of the 90s when Hack-a-shaq was used in the NBA.
@junk11111111 I mean no offence, but I couldn't understand your first sentence. The grammar was way off. Like I said, no offence, do you mind re-wording for me?
@iN31L Sorry about that, wasn't sure if it would make sense, no edit feature to correct it.
When an offensive player that is away from the ball is fouled, while two minutes is left during regulation play, that offensive team has the right to select any of their players (already on the court) to shoot/convert the free throws.
During the NBA Finals 2000, Sam Perkins of the Pacers fouled Shaq under two minutes. Not the best timing^^. It boosted the Laker's lead without Shaq at the free throw.
@junk11111111 If that is true, why does the ball always go to the person on the court with the best FT% (or whoever the team may want to put to the line)?
I always see this: Like I said in my first comment, when there's 25 seconds left in the game, and the winning team is put to the line because they need to be fouled, why is the ball always given to the person they want at the line? I may be wrong, but I swear that always happens.
@iN31L Other than Hack-a-Shaq, it can also be due to an accumulation of "team fouls" by the defensive team that is reached in a quarter that fouling a player without the ball allows the offensive team to select a player they want to shoot at the foul line. Some1 may correct me on that but "team foul" is key.
Wikipedia has a free throw section and a nice hierarchy diagram that may help.

A forum would be ideal to answer this question fully. :)
So if a player can't shoot 3s, and you crowd the paint to force him to shoot 3s, it's totally legit.
But if a player can't shoot free throws, and you force him to shoot "FREE" throws (FREE POINTS), it's somehow not legit?
I'm lost. Shaq had that one weakness, he lacked the skill to shoot the ball. He strength was his post game, teams are suppose to sit there and play Shaq's game all night and lose without any ability to stop it? Spurs should have just bent over and gave them the ring then.
Thats just a cheap way to win. proves that the teams cant accept defeat.. Waste of time to be honest.. They should just play the game fair and square.
Come on I knew a player shot 50% from the line and need disrupt the game tempo would hack the player for psychological advantage. It gives the player rest when a players shoots like crap from the free throw line.
lol..really? there's a video over this? u wna see a brawl out basketball stick to NCAA or the DLeague.
They've been teaching FREE THROWS the moment you decided to play basketball when you were a kid. It's called Free Throw because it's expected that those are easy baskets.
By all means this is LEGAL. If SHAQ knew how to shoot FT then this wouldn't be a problem.
ppl who dislike this tactic should relax and think again...they play basketball as a whole...they do not play lay-ups or jump shots...its a whole game...if u exploit a weakness in the opponents team then u are absolutely correct...if u know u have a weakness and u dont correct it...then blame urself for it...imagine this...if shaq had hit all his free throws...then this tactic would have rebounded on the opponent..they would lose fouls and lose points...
To be totally honest with you, I was honestly expecting Shaq to knock someone out. I bet if he threatened one of those guys that he'd break their nose if they did that to him, they'd stop. Then again, I'm sure a team would sacrifice one of their useless players to get Shaq suspended if he actually did exact revenge on them. I have to give him props for maintaining his composure, I think most people would lose it when they are trying to play, and getting fouled repeatedly.
I think this is beautiful. 1000+ offensive fouls weren't called on Shaq, nobody gives a fuck, and then the announcer dares to say it's unfair to gain advantage by the hack-a-shaq tactic.
@Slamwoo93 What? Doesn't really make sense at all....
Shaq has fundamentals in the post. Stupid fouls because a team is scared to (or just can't) guard him is not skill nor is it fundamentals. It is true that Shaq sucked at free throws and should have worked on it more, but fouling him constantly is not a good or new strategy. It was used on Dennis Rodman beforehand. It doesn't really work.

its a smart strategy. live with it. it was legal. its shaq's fault he has that weakness in his game. its the suns fault for making such a retarded trade that sent their team into a spiral. shaq didn't fit them in any way. shaq disrupted their rhythm no matter what, with or without the freethrows cuz he was slow then.
a coach's job is to win games, isn't it? the industry is geared toward entertainment, but objectively, the franchise looks for a coach to be a winner, not a showman. Popovich's methods were surely controversial, but they got the Spurs to the conference finals this year. the ends justified the means; they were winners, even if it didn't lead to a finals victory. LA and Boston were destined to collide, anyway.
Steve Kerr said it right, you should never be able to foul someone OFF the ball like that. See, if Shaq was posting up, then I don't mind the Spurs fouling him.
The darkest memory in Shaq's wonderful career...S.A Spurs is just a champion team that never deserve the title.. Popovich abused the rules to win games and series, afraid of playing the game with real strategy. I wonder if every players in the team actually agreed to this playing style. Where were their ethic and conscience? Stupid popovich. Sure he can never get another title already, old team, weak team, loser team, thanks to this loser coach.. where amazing happens
@KeanMingNeoh If you're going to type in English do it correctly. Most of the things you said made little to no sense. If they didn't "deserve the title" why do they have 4? I hate when idiot fucks like you type nonsense.
@THEXAV21 i was just expressing my thoughts, which is one of the purpose of the existence of this platform, if my thoughts do not match with yours, just dont read that, is not meant for you to read, is just for me to express only.
Anyway, little to no sense to you, but makes perfect sense for me, and the world is not revolving around you or me only. How wonderful that something which makes no sense caught the attention of the one who regard it as nonsense
@Murlescent Basically the other team purposely fouls Shaq ( A notoriously bad FT shooter) in order to send him to the line to prevent the Suns from being able to run their offense. It's a very cheap strategy, but really everybody in the NBA should be able to make their free throws. If they were able to, it would eliminate this cheap ass strategy.
@IWHBYF Usually done in late game situations. You intentionally foul the worst free throw shooter on the other team (Shaq) and that person has to shoot 2 free throws and you get the ball. Since they are a bad free throw shooter, they'll miss both shots causing them to virtually have a wasted possession. Hack-a-Shaq is no longer used because rules have changed to make it to where if you foul someone who doesn't have the ball, they shoot free throws and get the ball back.
@IWHBYF People foul Shaq on purpose so that he shoots free throws. They do this intentionally because Shaq's free throw percentage is very low, so the odds are, they will get the ball.
@zzr400cc Ofcoarse thats why he's one of the 50 greatest players of all time. You just think your Mr Rebel cause you have a different opinion. learn to respect the legends.
@vegetroyyy u sir are not are not my friend its won them the series so it works so it may not be the prettiest thing out there but its shaq fault he should have worked on his freethrow
well when you have the opportunity to stop the other teams possesion legally, you guys would have done it too if you were professional bball players. just shut up, the spurs didnt just win 4 championships because of hack a shaq, they won it because of teamwork and tough defense.
@Beicon55 But the team is not losing because it's not better than the other team. And with this we would never know who's the better team was. Some strategies actually make some games more entertaining to see how the player would overcome it. But with this, what's entertaining about Shaq making a free throw? Without it actually happening. We don't watch the games to see if Shaq would make a free throw.
the hack a shaq is genius: strategy to stop a behemoth from conquering the game, attack his achilles heel, make him shoot free throws. if Shaq was a 90% free throw shooter, dont you think the hack a shaq would be obsolete?
this is the same thing as fouling before a team has a chance to hit a three pointer... it's the way the game is played. i don't like it, but you win with whatever you can.
Since he hits about 50% on average, they score 1 point for every possession. This is equivalent to shooting 50% from the field, i.e. 2 points every other possession with the exception of 3 point shots. Thus, by fouling shaq, the Spurs guarantee that the Suns will score at least one point. Nothing cheap about that in my opinion.
@CRTtoVIP How hard is it to learn how to shoot free-throws? Well, its like a fucking tennis ball for Shaq; Try shooting a tennis ball and see how "easy" it is...
I understand why the Spurs are doing it but i dont understand how their fans are supporting it, they just dont love basketball, and they should have shame on their fuckin pussies team
and now here comes the hack a jordan (deandre)

The darkest memory in Shaq's wonderful career...S.A Spurs is just a champion team that never deserve the title.. Popovich abused the rules to win games and series, afraid of playing the game with real strategy. I wonder if every players in the team actually agreed to this playing style. Where were their ethic and conscience? Stupid popovich. Sure he can never get another title already, old team, weak team, loser team, thanks to this loser coach.. where amazing happens
KeanMingNeoh 6 months ago

All Shaq really has to do is make the free throws! This would really make the opponent think three times on whether they want to hack Shaq!
MrMidnightSpecialist 6 months ago
Wouldn't happen if shaq could make a shot....he's only earned about 50 million dollars to play ball.

3:03 LMAO shaq trynna run away ahah
TheManPizzy23 6 months ago
Not too sure of what hack a shaq is..
whenever this takes place, does shaq get the foul called on him?
Murlescent 6 months ago
@Murlescent Basically the other team purposely fouls Shaq ( A notoriously bad FT shooter) in order to send him to the line to prevent the Suns from being able to run their offense. It's a very cheap strategy, but really everybody in the NBA should be able to make their free throws. If they were able to, it would eliminate this cheap ass strategy.
comedynitegard 6 months ago
how many FT's did he get? and important: How many did he make?

Someone please explain to me in detail what a Hack-a-Shack is please
IWHBYF 6 months ago
@IWHBYF Usually done in late game situations. You intentionally foul the worst free throw shooter on the other team (Shaq) and that person has to shoot 2 free throws and you get the ball. Since they are a bad free throw shooter, they'll miss both shots causing them to virtually have a wasted possession. Hack-a-Shaq is no longer used because rules have changed to make it to where if you foul someone who doesn't have the ball, they shoot free throws and get the ball back.

@orr4eva13 Thanks man

@orr4eva13 no entendi lo ultimo sobre las reglas explicame porfavor si?
lalolara 6 months ago
@IWHBYF People foul Shaq on purpose so that he shoots free throws. They do this intentionally because Shaq's free throw percentage is very low, so the odds are, they will get the ball.

alteast shaqs retire now. worst freethrow ever.

Really good video! It shows many weaknesses of these "great" players. It also shows how the "great" players actually get their "great" points. LOL!
dwil2002 7 months ago
well when you have the opportunity to stop the other teams possesion legally, you guys would have done it too if you were professional bball players. just shut up, the spurs didnt just win 4 championships because of hack a shaq, they won it because of teamwork and tough defense.
HKISfreak1 7 months ago
frankly i think it does slow the game down and its not as fun to watch, but its called strategy. i definitely dont think the nba should change it.
JuggaloDuke505 7 months ago
@Beicon55 But the team is not losing because it's not better than the other team. And with this we would never know who's the better team was. Some strategies actually make some games more entertaining to see how the player would overcome it. But with this, what's entertaining about Shaq making a free throw? Without it actually happening. We don't watch the games to see if Shaq would make a free throw.
culedz29 7 months ago
the hack a shaq is genius: strategy to stop a behemoth from conquering the game, attack his achilles heel, make him shoot free throws. if Shaq was a 90% free throw shooter, dont you think the hack a shaq would be obsolete?

Notice they only tried that shit when he was in arizona....In LA hed fuckin murder the spurs
DTHMRCHNT 7 months ago
this is the same thing as fouling before a team has a chance to hit a three pointer... it's the way the game is played. i don't like it, but you win with whatever you can.
jamchew1982 7 months ago
Since he hits about 50% on average, they score 1 point for every possession. This is equivalent to shooting 50% from the field, i.e. 2 points every other possession with the exception of 3 point shots. Thus, by fouling shaq, the Spurs guarantee that the Suns will score at least one point. Nothing cheap about that in my opinion.
