What bugged me about this film (and 300), was the Slowdown -speedup bullshit. Someone walking down the street, SLOWMO! Silk Spectre II Walks down stairs, SLOWMO!
Fighting scene with asian gang, slowmo-SPEED UP.
Christ...
I am also happy they left out the black Freighter story, they would have messed it up. People wouldnt really understand how it mirrors the main storyline.
Thanks Matt + Nat for your suggestion to go out and read Watchmen, before seeing the film.
What an amazing work! It's so richly complex and rewarding in its original medium - it's a totally fulfilling experience. As every aspect falls into place, you gain a watchmaker's appreciation for how complete and precise it is, like the atomic checkerboard-structure of gold. But you know the joy is in the telling.
Thanks. I think the film experience will be much richer for me now.
Artists never quite bring to life what exists in their imaginations, which is why I totally understand Gibbons delight at seeing his vision bought to life so vividly.
Once a creative vision is out in the open it is open to interpretation by other artists and interpretation into different mediums.
I'm glad that they changed the ending. You can't have a serious take on American super hero culture with a giant fucking space squid, ya just can't do it!
You're absolutely right... and even though a good story is a good story, translation can be a bitch. I'm mostly worried about the absence of the Black Freighter and the Appendices. Those were crucial to my enjoyment in the Graphic Novel.
DotD wasn't very good that's true, but it was his first film, probably didn't have as much control on that one as he did in 300 (producer hand holding/interference) if you haven't seen 300 though, I can understand the apprehension, but yeah rent 300 and you'll see the talent the guy has (or him and his team however you want to say it)
i never like comic books but i had to pick watchmen up and well i loved it ! love the artwork in it. also Zack said the DVD copy will have more in it than in theater.
I'm sorry to state this, Matt and Nat, but I'm not going to see this film in theater. I can never forgive Zach Snyder for his dirt poor, bang up job of remaking "Dawn of the Dead". I'll watch "Watchmen" on HBO, or even on TNT or USA, but I will not watch it in theaters because of Snyder's poor storytelling for the DotD remake.
Actually, I'm not a fanboy. In fact I haven't read "Watchmen" yet (I got a copy from the nearby Target, haven't started it). But Zack Snyder failed with the DotD remake, and I'm not going to waste money at the theater on someone who claimed that his films were "true to the source material", and chose style over substance, sacrificing a solid story for a zombie baby and unrealistic character actions (namely, the "let's all leave the mall for no reason" bit).
Granted, some people like it, but it lacks a solid story to me (and I'm a person who cares about a solid story a majority of the time). There was no valid reason for them to leave the mall, except out of petty fear because of stupid people within their group. And there was no one, in the whole group, that opposed the idea, they were all on board (which is the most unrealistic thing ever). At least "28 Days Later" had a solid story and characters whowse actions made sense. Just me, of course.
*cabin fever*, that was the reason. The time in the mall surrounded by so many undead was continuously unnerving, and the bus idea seemed like a good one at the time.
Anyway, my point was just that not seeing a movie because a previous movie by the same guy wasn't like the other movie from decades ago that it was based on, is a pretty lame reason. I would just reccomend not seeing it when it first comes out, asking friends things about it, and if it sounds good then go - but don't just condemn a film before it comes out unless it is SUPERDUPER clear it will be lame... like the Dragonball movie :P
Swoby- If that were true, they failed to convey it in the film. There wasn't even a true sense of passing time between the shooting the father guy and the event with the zombie baby. From what I've read, it was suppose to be a month, but it only came off as being a couple of days. At least the original had a good sense of the passing time and the emptiness of the mall.

Moore is being a bit pompous IMHO.

Moore has had a bit of a bad run when it comes to adaptations of his work, but it should also be noted he's a bit mad.

DotD != Watchmen
Though, I actually *liked* the DotD remake (as in, it's the only zombie-type movie I can stand outside of 28 Days Later).

And its not the fact that it wasn't like the original film. It's the fact that it didn't have a solid story like the original.
