  • EPIC. WIN.

  • Damn I've missed out... oh well

  • bunch of nerds! but heck without nerds who would we work for ! and all the greatest hacks

  • knowing bushing(the guy you see on the video) since i talk to him once in a while he's not THAT much of a nerd ;)

    he's smart, thats true :D

  • Is there a full audio/video recording of this?

I couldn't find a thing about this on the CCC resources..

  • Awesome job guys! Would be nice to run some media apps on the Wii. I'm less excited by homebrew games though because, frankly, I've never played a console homebrew game that was worth a damn. At least not one in 3D. Homebrew coders generally don't have the time or expertise to make a quality console game.

  • Hey you're right...

  • Never known anything about the Wii's hardware, thanks for the de-mystifying.

  • Took em long enough. Theres also apperently some "save" exploit for zelda now. Theres some screen shots around of the game being crashed with it. and 4 lines of code can be ran too from it. 2008 is looking great for the hacking scene

  • Yeah, this is what Bushing and Segher (and perhaps others of the group who did this hack) are working on now. It sounds as though it's progressing nicely, though there isn't much more to say than that since it isn't released yet, not ready yet.

  • 8 lines. Jebus.

  • Custom firmwares anyone? it would be a great idea just like the psp.

  • The Wii is roughly twice as fast on a whole than the Gamecube and it has more RAM available to it. But yeah, it's essentially a Gamecube. WIth that little extra horsepower though, it should prove to be the perfect console for multimedia and emulators up to the N64.

  • And gamecube.

Ahaha, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! XD I had to say it.

I was kidding around, but either way, it's cool that we might see some cool things finally.

  • There is already up to N64 emulators for GameCube, but yes, they will run better on Wii :)

  • Dude, there are N64 games on the PSP. :)

  • but they run like shit

  • Actualy daedalus runs great on psp, try latest revision with mario 64 you will be suprised.

Basically open source = dynarec, which was handy

  • Yeah! finally i can start programming for the wii!

  • I think anybody that didnt know that the Wii is a Gamecube advance. When Nintendo decided to make this they stated on G4TV that they only had so much to make the system so they couldnt go overboard like the 360 or PS3. If you compare both systems they are just alike except for the bonus features the Wii have. Anybody that cant believe that is extremely naive. On top of that the cube wasnt a bad system it just didnt get no air play because of the PS2 and Xbox.

  • Erm, 3 things

1)"I think anybody that didnt know that the Wii is a Gamecube advance." is what? You never finished that sentence

2)The GC got loads of airplay, it was a better console overall than the PS2, graphics wise, game wise, fun wise.

3)Thw wii is the same as a GC? What? It has more RAM, internal memory and its fully online!

You obivously don't know what you are talking about...

  • He is at a hacker convention, and he also (with his team) formulated this one hour before the presentation. Don't worry, he knows leagues more than you ever will

  • this is very good news, really need to get into some wii hacking myself

  • This means that these guys can produce a linux distribution for Wii, since the Wii is based on a PowerPC CPU. When they discover which WiFi drivers are required in order to activate them, you should be able to use your Wii as a full desktop PC. With all the hardware available now in kernel mode, homecooked firmware could be fast available so the ("safety screen") could be removed, and non-commercial software (like emulators) can be released.

  • during the beta wii development stage, a dev was shown on youtube playing half life 2 on the wii online

    it is certainly very possbile

  • INCREDIBLE!!!

but whats this with "improved gamecube"? I find that offensive, but the rest was pretty cool!

  • Thats all it is really, like Gamecube 1.5

Still thats fine with me as it still plays fine.

  • It is though, look at the hardware specs. The thing is basically the same with a wiimote

  • Kick ass!

  • what was projected on that big screen there could be easily faked, but I'm pretty sure that was for real :)

  • not trying to attack you, TiagoTiagoT, or anything but why do you think the guys from c3 want to fake that? and if they would want to fake it wouldn't they do it in last years c3? (since they already found one backdoor for the wii (sort of)) :)

  • So hot! Really, BB!

  • brillant, brillant work!

  • Wow, that's really good!

  • awesome video guys, made me want to play the wii so bad hahaha

  • This pretty much opens a lot of doors for homebrew developers, as it is now possible for them to access the Wii hardware (Wii-mote). Check back in about 6 months, there will probably be a lot of freeware games floating around for the Wii.

  • Just smaller than the 360?

    I DON'T THINK SO!

They did a good job on this...

  • i understand what he is talking about, but what will this lead to?

  • have a fun of the wii

    nice movie very good

  • very nice, though it would be funny to see XBMC on wii. how bout WiiMC

  • kool very nice good vid

  • Eh ben Nintendo a du souci à se faire....

  • very cool.

probrably the next action will be run Linux. =P

  • that is amazing, I can't wait to see the finished product...haha i wish i could pull something like that off :)

  • the Wii is just BEAGGING port of XBMC.... nice work guys

  • Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

  • //word!! (well that was corny of me)

no but seriouisly gotta hand it to them

  • UP THE SCENE ON WII !! GREAT JOB

  • well done :)

  • so what does this mean? They didnt show anything amazing, did they?

PS where was this event held at?

  • They finally got full access to all Wii hardware with their own software, so in long term that might mean we could install Linux on Wii, for example.

The congress was held in Berlin, Germany.

  • Crediar, I remember you by releasing sometime ago the GameCube homebrew game Ascii Fighters. I'm wrong?

Nice to see Wii fully exploited!! :)

  • yep that's right ;)

  • i love and have THE WII

  • Keep up the good work :) I will be supporting you over at my site.

  • besides th fact that the wii was looked as a upscale model of the game cube really disappointed me, and to compare it to 360 is just an insult, but good job on the break though

  • I've seen these graphica card it's as small as a prossesor. The one in pc's is like a sun and the one in wii's is like the earth.

  • Very interesting...can't wait to see what they do next with it.

  • Does anyone have a link to the website owned by the people who performed his hack?

  • thx man :DDD

    we wait on hack PS3

  • would this help play DVDs

  • i thought the wii could play gamecube games i mean like useing the ninjuck and wiimote

  • Cute trick with the address lines. Similar to how A20M# was used to break Xbox 1.1.

  • I hope that at least 7 months we can look the beautiful *Ubuntu Splash screen on a Wii, long live to *Ubuntu from Colombia¡¡

  • The ds emultion scene must be trilled with this, i'm not sure how they're going last time i checked just a few comersial games worked.

Now that they have full acces to the wii-mote they'll be able to use it as the stylus

Guess it wont be soon but i'm looking forward playing elite beat agents on the wii

  • Amazing, kudos to you!

  • I must say, that is pimptastic. Keep up the good work.

  • By using the method they said, you would have to move the wires yourself to get it to work. A chip or a disc wouldn't work. But if they can go deep enough in the memory to find the encryption key a chip might be possible.

  • ryan, the chaos computing congress is a hacker convention that happens in Germany. It's more in depth than defcon and more fun than blackhat. One of the best cons.

  • Is this a hackers version of E3?

  • I officially have no idea what he is talking about 82% of the time. I want to be a geek.

(Truly. No sarcasm intended -- only respect for those who understand all this.)

  • Basically, they messed about with the innards of the Wii and found the magic number that lets them do what they want. This basically means people will be able to make their own Wii software (and potentially allow pirate games) , and people will be able to use it without having to buy a "mod chip" and soldering it to the systems insides. Very groovy; Linux on Wii has been hoped for a while, and this was the breakthrough they needed.

  • You made that much too n00b friendly... gives a bit of a false impression imo. Btw, pirating games has been happening since the ability to run bakcups with the mod chip.

It's great they have a lead, coming from the PSP development scene, I bought a Wii because I can't wait to make use of the Wiimote in my homebrew. Much to my dismay, only GC homebrew was available, even after a year of being released. Hopefully a softmod comes out of this, but id take an SDK over a softmod anyday.

  • THANKS for that great response. Now I get it!

Now here is another question proving my non-geek-status: Where will someone be able to find the no-doubt obviously cool games these guys will create? Ebay? Bittorrent and then save to DVD? Thanks again!

  • This is going to be good, amnd i dont think updates would mess with it.

  • Your right, an update to fix this problem would make any older games not function.

  • Amazing, i hope you can finish your work! :3

  • Fantastic, now the Wii's at the same stage the psp was at a few years ago, so roll on the homebrew(in a month or two of course)

  • wii is now worth getting for.

  • Where did this take place? HackConf 2007? :)

  • it took place on the 24c3. It's a big german hacker meeting (organized by the CCC)

  • Can anyone explain the importance of this? Does this development mean anything for region unlocking, playing backups, emulation? I have Japanese Wii and don't want to install an expensive and risky mod to play US games, and I can only buy Japanese VC games. I HATE region locking.

  • It definitely has importance for at least 2 and probably all 3 things you mention. I'm not sure about region locking.

Essentially they are saying that they are now able to run their own software on the Wii. They were able to do this before, but only with very restricted access to the Wii's "fun hardware" like wireless and bluetooth. Now they have learned how to access the full power of the Wii and use it in their programs.

  • The mod chips are neither risky nor expensive. I had my Wii mod-chipped the day I bought it and haven't looked back.

  • k, i understand that they had to hard-mod their wii to get the encryption/decryption keys, but now that they have those codes, will ppl need a hardware modded wii to play homebrew? is it as simple as wii linux releasing a distribution and we burn it and run it or do we still need a mod chip?

  • no need a modchip, like PSP did having homebrew games.

  • he needed to use openwii mod chip on his wii.

I talked with bushing other day.

  • does bushing or his friends have a blog/website about their research?

  • Imagine it wind waker with the wiimote and nunchuck....coool

  • wow real talented speaker. :)

    wii kicks butt.

  • linux wii build is almost done.

    i cant wait!

  • Where do you see this?

  • Why would he be afraid? Now he has shown what he's capable of and i think Nintendo would rather like to employ him than chasing him.

  • Indeed, there are far too many lazy bums and way too few people like him that get the good jobs :D

  • Point missed here is that even WITHOUT a drivechip, the people that DO have them are now able to dump the shit out of the Wii.

If they can mod Lego Starwars to run any piece of software, I'm pretty sure they can find out where the Wii Channels are stored, add more and have them run, perhaps with no drive modifications

  • awesome,

    \m/

  • well u know what this means!!! dont update your wii if any updates come out soon xD

i have to say i was very impressed and cant wait to see what 2008 holds for the modding world! :D

    Happy new years!

  • You don't understand. BigN can't fix this without making every Game out there unplayable.

  • I would like to know if he is using latest wii with d2c with lateset firmware? or older wii with latest firmware?

what mod chip do he use?

  • He has the latest update because you can see the Wii clock.

  • what drive chip did he use on his wii?

    wiikey or D2CKey?

  • wii's future is about to skyrocket due to the fact that brawl is going to be out soon.

  • I agree with haapsari, would anybody be so kind as to dumb this down a bit and tell me why it was so cool that they managed to do that? I have a wii myself and would def like to understand more about it.

  • So far developers had only been able to write Gamecube homebrew, that means no Wii hardware support (including the Wiimote) and limited access to system resources.

This right here is the first software that they are able to run in Wii mode. Meaning they have access to full hardware, including wiimote, Wifi, Bluetooth, etc.

This means we could soon see a DVD/video player compatible with the wiimote and with no disc swapping, and that would be only the beginning.

  • The future looks bright I can't wait to see what programmers will come up with

  • im more interested to see what the hombrew scene will come up with on the xbox 360.

  • Before you couldn't run Wii homebrew, only Gamecube homebrew, now you should be able to homebrew that can use the Wii Remote.

  • This guy gets the records for the most on-topic tangents in 5 minutes that I have ever seen in my life.

  • LOL!!!!! Everyone below me has geeky comments like "Actually, that's nearly impossible... by the ned of 2008, Nintendo will have grown thrice the corporation's of Sony and XBOX combined. The Wii sells at around a $50 a sale....." Everyone who has had a geeky comment about this clip should go kill themselves.

  • Those "geeks" will probably make more money in a week than you can make your entire life.

  • awsome. very interesting!

  • Aww man, why didn't this news come out earlier, damnit I just modded my wii. Oh well I will just unmodded it or buy a new wii ^_^

  • AFAIK this will work with any existing drivechip.

  • I have no idea what he was talking about, he totally confused me there.

  • Dito!

  • Huzzah!

  • i agree

  • Poor guy is so nervous. You'd think he'd have more confidence after what he accomplished. Oh well

  • Yeah its true, pretty nervous, but I think it was also mixed in with the excitement. I think I'd be nervous myself.

    Nervous speech but good accomplishment.

  • Dude its a pretty good system, i have one and the games are fun,the only bad thing is deciding where the sencor bar is gonna go

  • YES my seond Wii remote goes spaz if its not with in 1 1/2m of and direct in front of sensor but my main one is fine.

  • Nice vid hopefully there will be a mainstream hack soon so everybody can enjoy the joys of homebrew. Imagine playing SMB on NES with the remote or stuff like that. Possibilities are endless.

  • You can already use Wii remotes on the computer limitlessly. Theres almost no point to this.

  • I had a feeling this would be possible but nearly as fast as it has been..

    thx for the vid!

  • Jeez, what is with all the negative people throwing insults at each other in these comments? Get a grip folks, fight privately if you want to flame each other.

  • the guy seems really nervous..

    but great vid.

  • I'm glad to see this. =D

i wonder if they'll release their .iso to the world once they've gotten the Star Wars LEGO disc channel screen. (To bypass intellectual property stuffs, i think) But then again, to get rid of that screen will take a great deal more work...

To my understanding... this acts for wii as the Passme3 / Superpass work for DS, correct?

  • I don't think so...it seems that what has been done is: They hacked into the Wii and got the encryption keys, decrypted Lego Starwars, and then hacked their own code into it. There is no reason that in the future folks won't be able to make a totally original disc. As for piracy, that's already possible (this has nothing to do with piracy). If anything this will give having a modchip a more legit function (seeing that homebrew could be run).

  • great!

  • So the Starlet chip is why I have to turn the damn Wii off and back on to get to the main menu when I'm done playing Gamecube games? Lame.

  • wow... congratulations to the people working on it! homebrew is gonna be awesome on the wii.

  • thank you for getting the ball rolling. the scene will be growing soon now.

  • Nice!

  • Nice work.

I've always wondered if Wii could pull out 720p trough component if programmed to do so. Hopefully we'll see some real homebrew soon.

  • Hello World!

  • Great job, guys!

  • So that's it? They just jumped to a memory address that a Gamecube game shouldn't access in Gamecube mode and was able to inject code?

  • Don't think so. Sounds like by shorting pins on the chips they were able to access memory outside the bit that GameCube-mode can access. In this memory they tracked down the encryption keys and stuff, then used these to correctly encrypt their own demo software, this would presumably then run on a bog-standard, off-the-shelf, unmodded Wii.

  • Not quite. They ran a test program in GC mode which dumped the system memory. Usually that wouldn't achieve much, but they did a small hardware hack which allowed access to the FULL memory of the Wii (which is usually protected in GC mode). When they sifted through the memory they found the encryption key.

  • Can anyone explain to me the significance of this 'Encryption Key' :S

  • There's a big significance of this Encryption Key. Without any encryption keys, the hardware will essentially ignore your commands of wanting Wii access, and possibly bump you to GameCube mode. That or the system will not work. Encryption keys have been used in many consoles like Playstation 2/3 and XBOX (360)

  • wii love it I watched it live unlike you noobs who arent there to see it streamed, next year im going in person!

anyone who says were nerds are right buy wrong in doing so. please dont hate us, were do these things for free, unless were doing a job for one person.

  • I have been waitimg on this day since before I got my wii!

  • I didnt know that homebrew scene have conferences :)

  • honestly? where was the power point to help this guy out for the first 3 and a half minutes? i know what he was saying but that's only because i'm already familiar with the wii...

  • does this mean we can play imports now?

  • Hope this means that we can get a Wii Swap magic.

  • The future is coming!

    Total awsome.

    Good work!

  • No, fair enough question.. not everyone on youtube is hyper aggressiv idiot.

ZeldaDD is pretty much right. Pretty much anything that isn't created with intentions or permission from the parent company (Nintendo in this case)

  • This is great.

  • What a accomplishment! Imagine all the possibilities now....Wifi Super Mario War Anyone?

  • could someone explain to me what this does exactly? (im not a hacker)

  • So people who have a wii could play there gamecube games with the wiimote....thats kool...and this is coming from someone who only has a 360.

  • YAY! They finally made it! :'D

  • you think if you were presenting something you'd want to look a little more professional...like wearing a suit, or doing your hair?

  • Hackers don't do the suit thing, lol

They let the work speak for itself and this certainly did!

  • This is very good news.

  • From a completely ignorant standpoint, what the heck does this exactly mean?

  • Wow, +57?!

    You won the + prize!

  • yes indeed

  • hahaha. I love how at the beginning he corrects himself and says "a FIEND OF MINE has been playing with the wii", and then at the end they can't wait to get the hell away from there.. nintendo was probably firing up the party v& before they got off the stage.

    awesome

  • He actually says "I" then "actually I and some friends" ....

  • So we would be talking about a firmware modifikation like the 360??, so nintendo would know when we have our console modiffied and ban us like MS? xD

  • well that would need a unifiied online enviroment for them to do that and the Wii has none

  • Games could very easily check the firmware (and disallow access)...I doubt they would do this however as they haven't done anything of the sort to DS units with modded firmware.

  • on top of that, unlike the xbox 360 I don't think too many people will care weather they get banned and cant download video games from 1988 anymore. Only reason I haven't modded my 360 is cause I love Live too much to get banned.

  • U can still play on the net with ur modded xbox360 if you get banned off microsoft's network. You just need a cable to connect ur xbox360 to ur computer.

  • If that's an honest question, then it's software that has been custom made (at 'home'), to do something specific.

  • fuking fantastic i cant wait to code

  • So wait, we don't need any modchips to do this?

  • That is what it seems.

Apparently, they found some way to bypass/access the IO bridge device, by either not enabling the IO processor bridge protection code, or by somehow bypassing it.

In the future, you may be able to put in a disk first, and play pirated games(But a patch may be required).

Initially though, it will allow custom programmers to access/create homebrew (user created) games.

  • It seems that's exactly what it means. They have accessed the Wii Memory (all Wii code which allows the games to play).

Modchips just turned that code off but you couldn't use games which weren't from your region. This, however, means you can change the codes of the game so you can actually trick the Wii into thinking you have a PAL game when you're actually using a japanese NTSC game.

I'm no expert in this but that's how I understand this.

  • A modchip is needed to run the code. Unlike GC discs, Wii discs are encrypted, meaning that you cannot just burn your own "homebrew" code and run it in Wii mode. Now the encryption key is known and custom code can be encrypted, it can be run from a DVD-R BUT the disc copy protection still needs to be bypassed. THIS IS NOT A SOFTMOD!

  • But, hopefully, it can lead to one. =]

  • I want to say to the people that are afraid of a firmware update breaking this...I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to do anything without changing the encryption key used on the discs (from the one these guys have discovered), thus breaking older games, or at least making it so new games couldn't be run on older systems, neither of which they would ever do.

  • I can't tell if he's really nervous or really excited :D Maybe a little bit of column A, little bit of column B :P

  • xbmc wii?

  • That would be sweet. I love XBMC.
