I just got a nice TC-540 from the AWA spring meet complete with both factory mikes, AC cord and jacks in the cubby. Your speaker grilles are different than mine (Mine are the full bright mesh). The local library has the Sams photofact manual for it (TR-52), so I will be copying that for reference. If the speed is too fast, look for a slipping or raised pinch roller where it feeds the tape through past the heads. For muted or noisy channels, try cleaning the record/playback switch.
i hopw u can possible answer my question. i just got a sony tc-540 and everything works just for some reason it seems to be stuck in fast forward. i've had in the proper speed for the tape and its just fast fowrads the thing so any help u can give would be nice.
I have this same unit! I got it from E-Bay. It plays and records fine, but the left channel main amp needs an new transistor. It is fine with line out. This is an awesome and heavy machine. Mine also starts up slowly like yours does. Probably needs a new drive idler (mine is old and inflexible.) Thanks for the video.
I have an identical unit. My dad purchased it in Viet Nam, and I'm in the process of having it repaired. It plays, however, the speed selector knob is missing and plays fast at all speed selections. Perhaps the ff. button is stuck? Any tips? Thanks for posting the video!
How is the capstan bearing doing on that unit? I have the same model but it tends to loose speed because the bearings are bad. I can rock the capstan 1 mm back and forth.
Does it loose speed after running for a while and get real hot? Because it that's the case, then the motor-run capacitor is bad, an easy fix if you have the right capacitor.
It runs too slow from the start. But if I press a fingernail from above - the opposite direction as the pinch roller - it accelerates to allmost the right speed. By watching the stroboscobe effect in the fan on the backside I can see that the motor doesn't loose speed when the machine is playing. But the bearing is so worn that you can see clearly that nothing is parallel anymore.
It runs at 4,75cmps! That's really not a speed for quality.
And I can tell by the reel you're using old ampex tape. I haven't heard the sound yet (using my PC now to record an old tape to the HD), but I can tell you: This deck can do better :D
I have a Sony TC-600 Reel-to-Reel tape recorder and it has 2 speeds instead of three. The sad part was there was no 1 7/8 IPS on that speed, just the 3 3/4 IPS and 7 1/2 IPS. I don't have the TC-530.
What's the name of the song that starts on 1:22?
Awesome machine!

Funny, I've always been a sucker for Sony products as they've always exceeded my expectations. Built to last and made in Japan!

Maybe it's at the wrong frequency setting? Or is the pinch roller engaging the capstan?

Great quality!
