The train at 3:00 is doing about 58 kph at the beginning dropping to 46 kph at the end of the scene, according to the exhaust beat (200 to 160 rpm engine speed).
With a total of 1327 tons (engine plus train) the tractive effort at the wheels is about 16,59 tons without considering the rolling resistance of the train and locomotive. At 50 kph this works out to 3072 Horsepower at the wheel rim for lifting the train up the gradient.
@MrDorfmann Thanks for that info with regards to HP. After 3488 was withdrawn we were given 3501 as our regular loco and she was much more powerful and would just play with the loads up that bank. We had 3488 for years and thought it was normal to struggle up that bank but once we got 3501 we realised just how underpower 3488 really was and it was all due to her worn driving wheels.
Superb. What a wonderful railway and a great reminder of what real working steam was all about. Loved listening to your Driver controlling that wheelslip, a master craftsman. Thanks for posting.
@Reggyrail That driver with who I worked with was one of the best steam drivers I ever knew. He could get any steam loco to work and when it came to driving he was as you say a master craftsman. He, just like I had steam in his blood. Most drivers would have simply put on the brake and called for assistance.
