There is no "day" sound in the Japanese alphabet. The closest you come to that sound is "da-i", but then Hideo's name would be spelled as "Hidaio" instead.

@pokupokupoku This may be more of an English problem than a Japanese one. If I tried to pronounce Hideo's name using your suggestion (hit+deck+rot), I would fail with all three vowels. It may work with Australian pronunciation, but not so well with Americans. If you are from the US mid-Atlantic region: hi sounds like the word "he" (as in he/she/it), de sounds like the word "day", and o sounds like the word "oh": he-day-oh.
