  • not as good as poison but it's o.k for a German oompa band.

  • This is the New Order sound that I love. Hooky dominating, Barney's beautiful riffs. I never could dig on the goofy kraut-rock keyboards or the real dancey stuff. "Movement" is my favorite album by New Order.

  • not as good as def lepperd but it's o.k. for a u.k. hip hop christian band.

  • @ludmillaroman their not hip hop or christian rock

  • The sign of a beautiful song - it never dates.

  • the greatest rock song ever ugh

  • cymbal and guitar sound like an wafting cloud

  • yes the best version.. :)

  • master piece.

  • I think this is indeed the best version of this song, having listened to the other ones.

  • My number one song of all time

  • Best song of all time

  • Honestly, this is not very good unless you like listening to music that sounds a little uneven tempo wise.

  • this song is so much better with Ian Curtis on vocals for full impact , what an amazing guy he was R.I.P. Ian

  • Bloody love this band.

  • This is fuckin' great! Thanks for posting. Peace!

  • This version is far better then joy division!!!

  • @HELLZORBLADE Woah woah, i do agree the New Order version is a lot better recorded but this is trully a Joy Division classic. But overall it's Ceremony, quite possibly the greatest song played through speakers but i commend you on your opinions =]

  • @HELLZORBLADE it's the same band, just Bernard Sumner singing instead of Ian Curtis

  • this song is timeless, never get tired of listening to this great song

  • this is THE version. it's nothing crazy. it's just th eoriginal 12". period!!!! you try to make it sound like it is sthg we ve never heard. it's THE 12" of "ceremony", the one i bought in 1981. there is no other original. except the one by Joy Division in rehearsal available on Heart & Soul. and the live on Still is poorly recorded.

you think you found sthg rare????? why stupid people post obvious stuff an dtry to make it sound like they found sthg crazy........

  • @gillesnewwave hahaha. why are you so angry? go away.

  • @musicjunkie2891 haha! angry people can fuck off :)

  • @gillesnewwave oh, and learn how to spell. it makes YOU look like the stupid one. :)

  • @gillesnewwave lol okay. see yaaa.

  • @gillesnewwave You do realize that you are the one that comes off like a stupid asshole in this exchange, right? He says its the original version--and you argue that it's just the original 12". No shit, Sherlock. He didn't say anything to the contrary. He didn't say there was "another original." He didn't say it was rare. Man, what a dick.

  • @pieceustogether blah blah blah

  • @gillesnewwave Nope. It's the 7" single.

  • @rcbrayshaw well. that is what i say. it's the only version that counts. all the re-recordings of this songs for compilations, we don t care. this is "Ceremony". period.

  • @gillesnewwave their are two versions of the song. The one recorded before Gillian joined the band (this video) and a slightly different one which is more common which was recorded with Gillian on guitar, which is the one on the compilation album substance. Facepalm

  • @gillesnewwave this is 7 version (ok maybe early 12 too)

  • @gillesnewwave hey guy, the uploader never said this was a rare or unusual version. however, pointing out the version is actually helpful. I wanted to specifically hear this one rather than the re-recording, so I searched for "original" and this came up. as it turns out, you're a fantastic dickhead. might want to rethink your attitude.

  • @gillesnewwave this is version without gillian gilbert. it is original joy division "sound" :) i have 7 inch vinyl of that. :) but it was re-recorder later..and released as FAC33 too. :) more new order sound, and faster :)

  • @gillesnewwave Great version, but not as intense as the Birmingham version about 2 weeks before Ian killed himself, no? Was a JD demo, then became a New Order single....RIP Ian Curtis!

  • @gillesnewwave i was gonna say, wasn't the original version joy division anyways? lol yep this is the version lol

  • I love this version, so raw and dark!!!!

  • 6 people can't identify good music when they hear it.

    New Order RULES

  • This is the best version of this song, too bad Ian never recorded a quality version, and by quality i mean barely audible, marginally in tune, and with at least a half retarded monkey occuping the sound levels.

I'd settle for that over the versions that were barely recorded.

  • The first time I heard this song in 1981 I thought it was magical. Now, thirty years later, I know why. Forever, watching love grow. I love you Danielle.

  • when i listen to this i feel so alive, music like this sinks into my soul and it gives me a feeling so raw and so real. i can understand now why a certain song can save your life.

  • I kind of like the 1987 version, and I'm not sure why.

    Jordan, is this you? ;-)

  • I loved it when I was 14 and I love it equally now I am old and grey...

  • seriously, people. can we keep these comments about the song? i don't like going to videos and seeing a bunch of arguments, ESPECIALLY on my videos. keep it cool, friends.

  • the instruments sound like machinery, its pretty cool. i like this version better also.

  • Hip hop isn't the problem. The problem is the commercialization of it, which can happen to any genre. On that note, I seem to remember punk having a poppy radio run throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, so drop the attitude.

  • I hate those people who say "good music isnt around these days" your not digging deep enough. There is good rap its all stuck underground, and there is other music like this you just need to find it instead of complaining about todays mainstream music.

  • Seminal and Orgasmic!!!!!!

  • Don't agree with the rap bashing, but I do agree this is the best version of this song

  • nice !

  • This is CLASSIC ORDER at its finest... and i do agree that a new punk-ish revival is in 'order', but in the true classical sense.. exploring the root of music, whether dark or light. the neo-punk fadsters should take heed and try to come out with something that has presence and lasting power... or they can continue to wail like babies for all i care... just say'n ;)

  • I´m In NW since 1984. all my life brought me here!

  • the only good song of new order are joy division covers

  • prefer the joy division version purely because of the pain in his voice but they are pretty equal, fucking love it

  • welcome to the new order!

  • thumbs up if marie antoinette brang you here :)

  • this version is better

  • Great song, and it's great to read in these comments that young people are still getting into New Order. I personally prefer the other version of Ceremony, as I really like Hooky's nice little bass riff in the quiet part near the end, and he doesn't play it like that on this version. But this is still good.

  • I love this slower version

  • I'll take them down, no mercy shown

  • en chile tambien se escucha

  • I dunno if it's my mind playing tricks but was this an original JD track?....I seem to remember Ian C singing this before Bernard's version

  • @amaranth7777 yeah there was a live version on Still, which i guess is the first time most of us heard it. i was lucky got Hessian cloth cover for my 21st birthday (Still LP). Bloody hell that was 27 years ago. And where i go it goes!

  • @1980deadsouls

Yeah...that's where I heard it...glad I wasn't going crazy so tyvm for that

I seem to remember my version of Still was a double cassette thingy which got melted one balmy sunny afternoon...was gutted :(

Time does fly...I was about 15 when Ian died and tbh it still feels like yesterday.

  • @amaranth7777 yeah it was written by ian curtis but was never recorded by joy division cause of ian curtis's death

  • nu order is the most underrated band the last 25 years.

  • It warms my heart to see so many young ones liking this music!

  • Hey, where did you find the digital version of this song? Or did you just re-record it from the vinyl? Love it btw. Thanks!

  • @devorah66 Its available as an .mp3 from Amazon.co.uk as "Ceremony [Original 7" Single Version] (Remastered)"

  • @alangiff Thanks!

  • It's time we saw the back of rap crap and that pathetic bling shit and get back to the core of music, we need another punk movement so blow the shit out of the industry

  • @TalkToTheBody agreed.

  • @musicjunkie2891 i listen to hip hop and joy division, new order etc . its not about a specific music genre its about what you feel when you listen to music. and if you got this attitude that any other music styles are shit you will never discover other great music ;)

  • @goofular2 i listen to a wide variety of music, including hip hop and rap. however, it's my opinion that most rap (especially mainstream rap) is absolute shit. being degrading toward women, the excessive mentioning of gang violence and the constant need to mention how great they are isn't appealing to me. i'm not missing out on anything i'll miss, thanks.

  • @musicjunkie2891 A-men! I'm wondering why you don't have any thumbs up for your comment, fuck rap shit.

  • @musicjunkie2891 AGREE

  • @TalkToTheBody TRUE THAT!!! 'I' know because I 'was' there through it and was blessed at times to have gotten European 'vinyl' records we never even heard a hint of over 'here'. Will 'never' forget when got WARSAW(pre Joy Div. name change) and fell in love with Ian Curtis right then and there, plus still listen to him weekly to this day. Ohhhhh the good 'ol days!!!

  • @thatCanadiangrrrl Yes Joy Division was a fine band and saw them twice at Manchester Apollo supporting the Buzzcocks, both bands originating from my hometown. I'm glad to hear you got the punk movement over in Canada.

  • @TalkToTheBody there are some postpunk revival groups that are quite good. you just gotta search a bit :)

  • @stukahen yeah i have been made aware of one or two....the Sugar Bullets being one of them, they can be found on you tube.

  • @TalkToTheBody You`re ignorant.

  • @SX1995able and you are a person who issues such comments with nothing to back it up. Explain why I am ignorant

  • @TalkToTheBody I said you are ignorant because you call rap "crap", and claim that it is all "bling shit". Which goes too show that you know nothing about rap, other than the mainstream shit that`s out there. There IS good rap out there. If you were just signifying mainstream rap, then I apologize.

  • @SX1995able Rap has been around since Blondie brought it to the shores of the UK when she used it in the Tied Is High, not long after Neneh Cherry gave us the Buffalo Stance, a catchy song I feel. Punk was a movement, the music was immensely varied unlike rap and the punk movement was around for no more than 3 years...rap has been around for way too long. Rap is predominantly a bunch of talentless fat black guys with reversed baseball caps baggy jeans and all talking in the same tone, boring!

  • @TalkToTheBody Believe what you want, dude. If you actually search there are great "original" rappers out there, who talk about different things other than gangsterism, money, violence etc. Eyedea is an example.

  • @TalkToTheBody If anything, rap is a lot like punk, in that both have had periods of politically influential artists, and both rebel against "The Man". Public Enemy, Immortal Technique, Cypress Hill, NWA, Brother Ali, The Coup, (early) Dead Prez etc. are perfect examples.

  • @SX1995able How many more rap artists do we need to see and hear who churn up the same shit year in year out. Punk bands were recognised for being individualistic unlike rappers where the majority look and sound te same. Punk bands often played different styles and vocals were very varied, this reflects on the fact that punk was not a music genre per se but a movement. Rappers have this annoying need to "tawk cool y'nah wot a meen", why the fuck can't they be themselves

  • @TalkToTheBody Maybe commercial rap artists. look beyond what you see on tv man, if people did the same for punk they'd only know american pop punk link blink 182, which would be an utter travesty. There's more to rap than eminem and lil wayne, just as theres more to punk than the shit you see on tv these days.

  • @jtowen06 The thing that really irritates me is the vast majority of black rap artists who do exactly the same, they all have to talk "y'nah wot am mean" and it pisses me off when so-called British kids (especially white kids) are emulating the voices, they wear the same reversed baseball caps, fuck all individuality. I am all for keeping my ears open and my taste varies widely but if you can tell me a good rap band that can actually create great music then let me have a few links please

  • @TalkToTheBody You could try some tribe called quest, early nas i really enjoy, along with a lot of wu tang stuff, again as with a lot of music, most of it is a far few years old, The origins of hip hop when it was all old soul samples, and great lyricists gave us some really great songs, i just think its harsh to dismiss something from the bad imitation of itself it all became.

  • @jtowen06 ...thanks for the tips but don't you think that all this fat arsed black rap artist covered in bling driving in super cars, wearing baseball caps, hoodies and baggy jeans and speaking in a common cringeworthy dialect is a big yawn? They are painting a very negative image of themselves in my opinion, a kind of "look how successful I am kind of thing".

  • @TalkToTheBody yeah but then there are the rednecks and their country music and their "get off my preperty or il shoot ye with ma rifle" image, so white people get a negative image too

  • @TalkToTheBody i agree completely, certain people have made careers out of that type of shite.. i find with a lot of hip hop that artists tend to make great music when they have nothing and then it tails off into commercial self important shit. early nas, illmatic and the demo's prior to it are exceptional, have a listen to big l as well, even though his subject matter is very violence orientated his flow and rhyming are insanely good.

  • @jtowen06 and there lies another problem with rap etc., it's very connected to gangs and gun crime, particular;y amongst the black communities.

  • @jtowen06 The dutch singer Anouk has kicked out some great rock/pop albums and her new album To Get Her Together features some rap influenced stuff. If you search on you tube you can see "the making of" and there's some of her co-producers in there

  • @TalkToTheBody Well Indie is doing something similar tho not as powerful as punk

  • @ninjaxhayabusa Indie has been around for decades, it was essentially the new name given for what was once called New Wave. Punk was only around for 3-4 years at most then it spilled over into New Wave and got more commercial. I have a lot of interested in many genres especially Indie. Punk was powerful not so much musically but as a movement and it did a good job.

  • Beautiful song. It always makes me fresh and alive, regardless of how bad I might feel.

  • fucking ace

  • I like both New Order versions, and wish they'd release this one on CD.

  • @leshawnkincey Ahh, thank you, I feel ridiculously dumb for not knowing that now, lol. thanks. :)

  • Me gusta mucho este tema!! me traen muchos recuerdos cuando estube fuera de mi pais, mis tristezas y mis alegrias también..

  • I never used to know that Joy Division were those guys who did 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', I'm in a band now and I'm 17 and I'm being introduced to so much music that I never would of liked before but I love this song, it's so emotional in the best way!!

  • I LOVE THIS SON FOREVER PERFECT IS MY LIVE

  • I was surprised to learn that U2 was strongly influenced by Joy Division/early New Order's work. But when you listen to U2's early stuff, you can definitely feel the influence in the style they developed.

  • Comment removed

  • @TalkToTheBody You Know U2 started 2 years before Joy Division right and U2 were in the studio with Joy Division when they recorded Closer

  • @jacobbeahm I am not sure how old you are, but I do believe both bands started in 1976, with Joy Division using the name Warsaw at the start and I do believe U2 had a different name in their early days. U2's first single (EP) was released in Sept 79, whereas Joy Division released their first single (also an EP) the summer before in 1978.

  • @TalkToTheBody U2 and Joy Division started at the same time but both are still before Nevermind the Bollocks so they both started before the punk explosion in the UK so i was wrong

  • @jacobbeahm As U2's Boy recording sessions started in Dublin in March 80 I doubt very much that U2 were in the London studio with Joy Division, as Closer was also being recorded in Mar 80. No one had really heard of U2 until they relased I Will Follow. I was a very big punk fan and I had never heard of U2 until that single came out. Anyway, I am not quite sure what your original point was? Maybe you can explain why you said what you said?

  • @TalkToTheBody U2 were at one of the sessions for Closer Peter Hook says so in a video but i cant send you it by comment for some reason

  • @TalkToTheBody U2 relased ''11'o clock tick tock'' in May 1980 ,which was produced by Martin Hannet. They first met him, while Joy Division was recording ''Love will tear us apart''.

  • @kocots1991 yeah i was aware martin hannet worked with U2 in the early days, I guess that's why they went to Islington to see him when Joy Division was in the studio. Like Peter Hook said U2 were just a bunch of little boys back then. But contrary to what you said in your original message U2 did not start 2 years before Joy Division, they both started in 1976. Contrary to popular belief 11'o clock tick tock was not U2's first pressing

  • @TalkToTheBody That wasn't my comment. :D

  • @kocots1991 :D oh i'm getting too old for this ha. I do apologise

  • I'm thinkin' this is a live drummer.. right? As opposed to the LINN drum, as on

    Blue Mon.)

  • @timjmoran It is a live drummer

  • MARC JOHNSON

  • Perfection.

  • Love it...

  • Watching forever, forever

    Watching love grow, forever

    Let it be known, forever

  • I used this in my Science Project (on my channel) and my teacher gave me an 100% haha I think I'm the only New Order/Joy Division fan that's 14. Hell, I'm proud of it.

  • @Gamer606 that really is something to be proud of. kids your age listen to the most ridiculous music. kudos to you and congrats on your project!

  • @musicjunkie2891 Thanks!!

  • @musicjunkie2891 You mean MOST kids our age.. My parents pretty much raised me on good music. Like New Order/ Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Neil Young, and a bunch more. Anything up to about 1999 really... And I'm pretty damn happy that they raised me on it and every time someone plays "current" music I think, "Wow, they can broadcast shit through radios now". :)

  • @gabeyoung12345

you should check out Section 25 if you don't already know them. At first i thought they were too close to JD for comfort, but they really grew on me. Producet by Martin Hannet and Bernard Sumner.

  • @Gamer606 It's definitely cool not to live in a vacuum.

  • @Gamer606 I am glad someone else has good music taste

  • @Gamer606 When I was 14 I thought the same thing. At the time it was difficult to find their stuff here in Brazil but thank god I managed to find some stuff. Getting to know New Order is one thing I'm really proud of. If only there were more people like us.

  • @Gamer606 same here but im twelve!!!!!

  • @Gamer606 No you aren't mate

  • @Gamer606 I totally agree, I'm 13 and all of my teachers love me because I listen to Joy Division, New Order, The Cure ect.

  • @Gamer606 You should be!

  • @Gamer606 i'm 14 and love them!

  • @Gamer606 AUH UH :P It's awesome to see (thank God) somebody else that's the same age and likes them. Lol, I thought I was the only 14 yr old who liked them too :)

  • @Gamer606 I'm a big Joy DivisionNew Order fan. I'm two years old than you though...but it's not like it's that big of a difference in age.

  • @Gamer606

its good to know im not alone.

man, fuck our generation, they cant comprehend what good music is.

  • @Gamer606 You're not the only Joy Division fan your age, trust me, there's thousands of us!

  • @Gamer606 you're not the only one , but it is rare. Respect

  • @Gamer606 im 12

  • @Gamer606 There is hope for the young generation today!!. Nice one. I wish I had known of this tune when i was 14. 21 years ago.... :-(

  • @Gamer606 You are not special or cool because you listen to this. You simply have good tase in music like many other kids your age. You are by far not the only one.

  • Man, I'd love to hear a studio version of this song with Ian Curtis. The other versions are just too low quality.

  • Agree. This is the BEST version of Ceremony. The sound of the vocals is far superior more emotive and the music is less poppy sounding. This version is reminiscent of the Joy Division sound.

  • Marie Antoinette brought me here :)

  • @Pedrofrombrazil one of my favorite movies. has suchhh an amazing soundtrack.

  • @Pedrofrombrazil Never seen it...but I've heard it has a great soundtrack with great post-punk songs like New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc.

  • Comment removed

  • Incredible to think that this is 30 years old... the pics a bit misleading as Gillian wasn't in the band at this time...... IMO this is one of the most complete songs ever .... and generated from just 3 musicians ......I'm torn between this and Atmosphere by Joy Division as my all time fave tune ........

  • JOY DIVISION changed music forever

  • @anunknownbeatle It's on the remastered version of "Movement", under the title "Ceremony (Alternate Version)"

  • My favourite song of all-time and DEFINITELY the better version (this is the green cover single). It's a brilliant, dark, moody piece IMHO. I agree with your version of the lyrics but I keep seing them mis-quoted. Great song!

  • buyers, beware:

for some reason, many downloadable versions of this song titled with something like "original 7" version" are not in fact the March 1981 recording, but the September 1981 re-recording.

the Amazon MP3 version linked here appears to be the truly original March 1981 version (while the iTunes link is not)

note that the original is 10 seconds longer, cymbals more pronounced. you can really hear the difference on the transition out of the line "too frail to wake this time"

  • LOVE IT THE BEST MUSIC NEXT TO THE CURE!!!!!!!

  • im only 18 but i love this kind of music. post punk truly appels to me. i dont get todays music (save for postpunk revival) i wan to start a band like this one day.

  • What a lovely tune!

  • AWESOME SONG! Can't stop listening to it...my kinda music;)

  • great song :)

  • taking me back.... love it... thc

  • New Order were and will always be the best!!!

  • I remember when I first heard this as a kid. I rushed out and got the 7" inch in Birmingham and played it over and over. It just sounded as though it came from another planet, distant and threatening, even the cover was odd. I was truly hooked from that time on. Now I'm older it's just such a great song, but the production on this version, is truly wonderful.

  • try going through your teens with them...and Joy D....

  • My favourite thing about this is how it sounds like it came off an old 4-track portastudio, and the tape has seen better days. Adds character, and shows how nothing can dampen the spirit of this amazing track.

  • love new order, loved joy division more, but this is my favorite version, for sure.

  • Reminds me of Manchester every time......great version, you're right, i always liked this one too.......

  • So if I missed something 30 years ago would it be a bad thing, ,Not likely as I am now finding that i like Joy Division more then any other music I her now, No matter if it is New Order so lets remember that there are always memories of the pat that will live on,,, God Speed Ian!!!

  • @anunknownbeatle I have the 7", I also have the demo version , and the Ian studio version, that was on the Heart and Soul JD box set. There is a demo of this, with Ian singing probably vocal overdubbed, cause barney was trying to sing on top of it. REALLY cool if you ask me.
