  • wow! love it!

  • Question: at what point, after graduating from Estes kits and designing bigger units, does the rocket need an actively self-adjusting guidance system to keep it flying vertically?

  • @logicbranch It never does, if it's built right, it will fly vertically just fine.

  • @logicbranch

Now on the other hand, if you want a rocket that will fly perfectly straight horizontally, then a heading hold gyro and fast digital servo for each control axis would be a start.

  • Excellent stuff - love it !

I've just ordered a 25 kilo sack of KNO3, I've been reading up on the mixing of the 'rocket candy' and have some previous experience with smaller home made rockets. We don't have big areas of desert like this here in the UK but there are some wide open spaces - wish me luck !

  • @BaddaBigBoom Good luck!

  • why not building a liquid fueled rocket? im working on an liquid engine right now..

  • a lot of crazy things happen to a rocket when it aprouches super sonic speeds or goes though the sound bearea frist theres a ring of pressure around the rocket just as it goes thru sound, if the tube is not strong enough it crushes the tube and that little wobble as its going up is caused by it hiting the sound beara its like its bumping into it if the motors fast enough it will pop thru the bearea if not it bounces off it a so call stall, but when you see that little wiggle its hit the breara

  • are you puting your rocket kno3 mix in a reloadable motor like areo tech? i was thinking of doing this will it work?

  • actually if you read carefully you will see that i didnt say you supported anything

i was sugesting terrorists were watching the video thats totally different then verbaly emplying that someone supports terrorism you are accusing me of a false statment

it was a joke anyway relax my man

  • wow 50,000 terrorists just learned how to dick us over one more way

  • @youngmoneycash10 so ignorant

  • @solidskateboards no actually not even close to recognizing my charactor buddy please

before you go judging anyone from now on i suggest you get your facts straight it was a joke

you took way too seriousely i love the rockets my self but dont fuckin brand a person on a single comment

it only marks you as a steriotypical ass hole if i didnt say anything about you dont say shit about me

  • @youngmoneycash10 You did say something about me, you said I was supporting terrorism. That's a joke to you?

  • @youngmoneycash,a couple of notes. Don't speak from ignorance. The BATFE recently lost a lawsuit in Federal court to the National Association of Rocketry and the Tripoli rocketry association for arbitrarily restricting high powered rocketry fuels. The fact is, Ammonium Perchlorate Composite Propellant (APCP) is much more powerful and legally purchased for this purpose.

Another bit of info, Hamas has been making their own rockets for many years now. Don't be ignorant.

  • where are these launches done?

  • @knifemakejake California

  • That sounded pretty kick arse! Seemed to have a radical flight path change half way. Im a science teacher and managed to burn my right hand with this stuff once. Luckily I didn't need the skin from my butt grafted to my hand, but it was a close call.

  • what r u mean by a sugar ? it is a normal sugar that we put inthe food ?

  • @johnmhmd Yes, normal sugar.

  • did you just use KN03 and house hold sugar ???? awesome video by the way

  • @243bolt Thanks, yes.

  • I wasted all my pottasium on a bunch of mini rockets, fuses, smoke bombs, and just testing a bunch of crap together like magnessium flakes.

  • Are you supposed to compress kno3 sugar together hard enough for it to be one substance or do you just pour the kno3 in?

  • so this was a homemade motor?

  • @szelle63 Yes it was. All my engines are made in my garage.

  • @solidskateboards whats the legality of homebuilt rocket motors? Is there a weight limit i'm guessing?

  • @szelle63 There is and it's a Federal one but the engine would have to be HUGE, almost capable of reaching space. Anything you can make in your garage is legal.

  • @solidskateboards not meth.....

  • awesome...one of the best i've ever seen

  • @SIRanimationMANIAC Thanks!

  • Building Pop bottle rockets in Science this week... This... Is my Inspiration!

  • Thanks dude! Good luck with your project at school!

  • Dude, sweet!

  • 0:33

  • that was fast, nice job dude

  • Thanks! I think it was too fast

  • Put a warhead with a proximity fuze and a guidance system on that and you can shoot down aircraft.. for fun.

  • bad ass rocket dude! only a question, what speed those things reach as they are climbing?

    sorry for my english

  • The one in this video....no idea, but with the K500 engine about 400 mph.

  • NASA called.. They want their rocket back

  • makes my small scale potassium nitrate rocket look like crap

  • nice lounch guys i love the desert lots of room, i only have the AMA here to louch my rockets and there limited in size, is the out side of your rockey body PVC or card board caseing or alumunum, and how many pouns or grams of rocket fuel did you use in what size casting? thank you for posting the great video, David*

  • The rocket body is made from ABS drainage tube 3" diameter. The K450 has 4.83 lbs of fuel in it and the L950 had almost 10.

  • Just got the book, can't wait to get started, this was an awesome launch!

  • Great! Good luck! Post a video when you do!

  • KNO3, sugar and cornsyrup, just grinded together?

  • You'd never want to grind the oxidizer and the fuel together, they might ignite. It's simple, the kno3, sugar and corn syrup are heated together to lower the viscosity and then poured into the engine casing to cool. I wrote a book on how to make the engine, it's available on amazon, it's called K450 PVC Rocket Engine. Good luck.

  • @solidskateboards Okay thanks, I'll have a look.

  • @solidskateboards As an owner of this book I must say it is a must have. great instruction. Do you have instructions on your parachute piston design?

    thanks for your work.... cool.

  • Thanks! That's awesome, I'm glad you like the book. I'm currently writing one on the entire rocket construction, not just the engine. It will have instructions on the parachute piston, the apogee detector, fins, nosecone, engine....all of it. Should be finished in the next few months.

  • At first it was straight as an arrow and then it went bill clinton like (crooked).

  • Too funny.

  • @solidskateboards I was rather surprised that a rocket this powerful was made with potassium nitrate. have you ever thought of making a PVC grenade launcher that fires missiles? THAT WOULD BE SWEET.

  • Don't really know.

  • next time put a camera on it

  • what about the filming FROM the rocket ?

  • did you add a ferric oxide to the mixture of the rocket s fuel?

  • No, just Kno3, sugar and corn syrup.

  • how do you make it >?

  • I wrote a book on how to make the engine step by step, "Build it Yourself PVC Rocket Engine" available on my site or through Amazon. Hope that helps.

  • Look likes Kassam Rockets haha

  • Awsome

  • Awesome :))

  • Wow, that one hell of a rocket. GOOD JOB GUYS

  • VERY UNSTABLE FLIGHT

  • It was stable until it went supersonic and the fins ripped off. Oh well.

  • @solidskateboards supersonic? you wish

  • Hi, please tell me. If I add corn syrup to the KNO3&sugar mixture and mix it all together, would it make the fuel as flammable as it was? And what if I can't find corn syrup, what can I use instead? I want to be able to make fuel cells to add from one to three, depending on my needs. I appreciate your help!

  • Well it's a little more complicated than that. You need to mix them in the right ratio or your fuel won't burn. You can use Lyle's Golden Syrup if you're in the UK or you can Google how to make corn syrup on your own. It's pretty simple. You can also purchase the book "K450 PVC Rocket Engine" on Amazon or inverseengineering and it will explain exactly how to do it step by step.

  • lloks a bit like quassam :D

  • Wow, that was beautiful, you have some great stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks!

  • how high did it get?

  • No idea. It didn't have an altimeter on it.

  • steve lookin for the rocket,,,

  • next time make a bigger one ride it up then parachute down

  • nice sound of rocket

  • only if it had a longer burn time

  • hamas!

  • ocotillo?

  • Yes, Ocitillo.

  • what desert are you guys in?

  • We drive to a desert 90 miles east of San Diego, CA.

  • Why use the corn syrup?

  • The corn syrup makes the fuel flexible and protects it from cracking under stress.

  • @solidskateboards is this only for the bigger ones?

  • Smaller ones can crack too. It's good all around.

  • @solidskateboards How much should be used??

  • 65% Kno3, 18% sugar, 17% corn syrup.

  • @solidskateboards will the corn syrup make it more or less powerful, or just make it so it doesn't crack??

  • It makes it a little less powerful since corn syrup consists of dextrose not sucrose but power is useless if the engine blows up.

  • @solidskateboards is the corn syrup a binder or is it for a different molecular structure, because i assume you use rcandy because powder at that size is suicidal...anyways yeah...but when you melt and then crystallize again it shouldn't need a binder

  • The corn syrup is not a binder, the sugar is the binder. The corn syrup makes the fuel flexible so it won't crack and over-pressurize. The fuel is not rcandy, it's flex fuel and made completely differently.

  • Holy cow. I just don't get how Rcandy can get that kind of instantaneous thrust... I mean, it takes a second to ignite and reach its max output. Are you lining the core with something?

  • This isn't Rcandy, it's flex fuel. It's a different formula and preparation method than Jimmy Yawn's method. It's a single case bonded grain and there is nothing lining the core. The fuel is powdered sugar, corn syrup and Kno3. There is a book on amazon showing how to make it. It's called K450 PVC Rocket Engine Design and Construction by Dan Pollino.

  • @solidskateboards Well that explains a few things, thanks.

  • Amazing! Bravo!

  • omggggg nice i wanna made that thing 100/100

  • that def is supersonic

  • Holy Shit man that was insanium in the cranium.

  • I doubt it went super-sonic.....no offense! but non-the less this is amazing!!!

  • hi

you can help me make a rocket? or give me a web steering to help me? Because an experiment in order to pass college physics class.

Also I am trying to make a rocket with Potassium nitrate and sugar, but I do not know if it's with PVC cylinders.

And pardon if I write bad, because I do not speak English, I only translate into google.

    thank you very much

  • Get the K450 PVC Rocket Engine Manual at amazon.

  • /watch?v=hmi0Sf_-BmQ

  • from where can i get Kno3

  • From a product called Green Lantern Stump remover, which can be found at any lawn and garden store.

The chunks will need to be milled in a rock polisher before mixing your fuel.

Mill the ingredients separately or else you'll wind up with an explosion.

  • @MRshaqrawi

    Ebay

  • awesone!! can i have it?dam that was fast!

  • Beautiful!

  • thats a beautiful sound =p

  • happy festivus!

  • verry niceee!!!!

  • how did they know that it almost went supersonic??? something inside rocket?

  • Just a guess.

  • @JVC7400 Becasue it was LOUD!!!!!! haha

  • Brother, do yourself a favor... Buy an accelerometer. A GWiz LCx would be an excellent choice, or an HCx will record and report data from your flight.

With this much impulse, you're going to approach Mach, if not transition it. Learn about doing composite lay-ups on the fins and fin/airframe joints. Stiffen the fins to keep them from fluttering, and improve the a/f to fin joint. Fin flutter and sonic transitions kill airframes dead without it.

I AM qualified to speak to this... 8^)

  • Thanks for the suggestions! My building strategy is to put together high power rockets with off the shelf inexpensive parts that perform the same or better than commercially made rocket kits. My goal is to have the entire rocket cost less than $100 including the engine so accelerometers and composite materials are out of the question. I agree with you, they do work well, they just don't fit into my design strategy.

  • Good luck with it, bro.

  • Nice

  • Nice

  • this is all fine and dandy when you have a desert to fire rockets around. Where is this wonderful place?

The best ive got is a cliff where its so windy it near on sucks your eyes out your face. GOOD JOB YOU GUY!

  • California.

  • can u create a FULL tutorial plz ?

  • haha very nice, but after 2 seconds in the air, it went to the right, quite weird:P

  • I'm stoke for next summer cause I think I might be able to set the record for Kno3. I'm working on a 2 stage right now that should perform quite handsomely. The only problem is getting to a good launch site. It's hard to play with rockets in the suburbs, but hopefully I can get down to a place like this to launch before I'm 18 and I lose my legal innocence for launching stuff into military atmosphere.

  • my god. HOW AWESOME

  • that was fucking ace

  • that was BADASS

  • Can this explode. I wanted to make and shoot at the helicopters flying at the border. Im joking. Does it explode?

  • All rockets, amateur and professional have the potential to explode or not work correctly. That's part of the fun of this hobby is learning about all the forces involved in a rocket's complex flight.

  • TOP NOTCH LADS!!!

  • @Leny1777 PSSST AIM FOR THE PROPELLER IN THE REAR.

  • Is rocket-launching prohibited in certain areas of the US?

  • @OmniPhun if you shoot it parallel to the ground then they can't moan about it and will make a really cool missile.

  • i ownder what would happen if that pvc hits some1 in the head when its coming down you guys should try it!

  • Are you volunteering?

  • no but i can give you my brother!

  • and that was KNO3 and sugar? nothing else?

  • Some corn syrup to make the fuel flexible.

  • how much fuel did you used?

  • 9 pounds

  • THIS IS INSANE¬!!

  • Where can you get ignition rope or can you make it at home

  • i saw that in another video...you need some electrical wires , a switch and electric conection

  • where do you put the stuff

  • how do you lunch it, I mean how do you lunch it if you are not close (with a burning rope or what)

  • Instructions on making the engine can be found in a link in the "more info" section near the "subscribe" button.

  • How much does the book cost??

  • well i have constructed pvc rockets shoes but havin tryed them yet but i will be 2make a video wen i do

  • holy shit wait kno3 was this rocket candy or just the kno3 plus sugar and kitty litter or something else completely? i couldnt believe that thing...

  • Read the video description, there's information there on how it's made.

  • sorry i actually did read it, i came back to the video after a while and 4got about the link.

  • what was that at 1:11.

  • Mother of god! I need to make one.

  • obviously u havnt seen the video on how to make it on a smaller scale. that should explain alot. search rocket motor then fing the one that ses kno3 or sumat. should be the first 1 anyway

  • Why would i want to make it on a smaller scale?

  • not u, i was replying to seldian. i was trying to answer a question for u and its on another video on how to make them on a smaller scale.

  • oh cool

  • no small.....big scale!

    cabeman want big!

  • How many pounds of fuel did you have in there?

  • 7 pounds

  • so you just put 7 pound motor inside a pvc pipe rocket and let it go?

  • I'm sorry I don't understand the question.

  • You made a motor using seven pounds of KnO3 and then light it and this is what happened? whats the diamiter of the pipe you used and how did you make the nozzle at the bottom if you dont mind explaining

  • The nozzle was made out of concrete and the engine was made from PVC. The nosecone was a plastic wine glass and the fins were wood.

  • you can find more information on the construction of the engine at inverseengineering

  • But u have to pay for that!

Can u tell me how to make it?

  • Mix 65% Kno3, 18% powdered sugar and 17% corn syrup in an electric wok to 210 degrees. Pour it in an engine casing and put in a coring rod. Make sure the nozzle throat is sized so that the engine does not exceed 300 KN. Add an igniter and a smoke element then put on an end cap and seal it.

  • this rocket kick aSSES!!

  • the first time the noise reminds me the new transformers misils sound

  • that was one strong rocket.

  • What quantity of fuel did you use? What was the size of the thrust hole? How did you fill the engine with the powder?

  • solidskateboards you say if you add rust its more powerful did u make your own rust or did you get something more spesial?

    Thanks i love your work

  • Thanks! Iron oxide will increase the burn rate of the fuel and cause the engine to explode. You can purchase it at most home stores as a concrete colorant.

  • how much rust? well to what ratio would u say?

  • 3% will do the trick

  • That's amazing!

  • how much kno3/sugar in each rocket? O_O
