in 1992 I saw Helmet and Quicksand one night and Jesus Lizard and Laughing Hyenas the next at Metro in Chicago. Both sold out, both amazing shows with out of control pits from wall to wall, for $10 each.
Everybody, enough with the pathetic attempts at trying to label this amazing organized sound. How can one say it is a particular pre labelled style without having a decent argument that it sounds like another. It's not any one style but it's own. Helmet just simply is............and that's that. Pioneers of music. This line up was magic, they all bounce both together and off each other so effortlessly despite how much work they would have put in to be so tight. Enormous pounding groove, happy t
maybe some of the guitar hooks / rhythm techniques that defined helmet so well are taken over by korn. i kinda agree here but korn was original enough to take it further (at least on their first 2 albums, it went quite downhill after those (imo))
That whole album is a flat-out masterpiece from start to finish. Great band, great songwriter, great sound on the guitars, great drummer and FUCKING GREAT snare sound!! Helmet should've been A LOT bigger than they were.
Well, Page doesn't like the band to be label anyway. But he has those metal riffs and punk rock feeling for sure. Everyone mostly knows Helmet as an alternative metal band but I guess everyone has their opinion. I, myself don't see them as a punk rock band but they just mix in different stuff so it's just called Helmet.
I didn't see this when it aired...but when this show moved to syndicated TV, Helmet was on again. They did Rollo then In the Meantime during the credits. I recorded it at the time but lost the tape many many years ago. I sure hope it surfaces some day cause Rollo is such a rarely performed song...let alone a live TV version! I bet Bogdan has a copy.
don't think that there's pretty much to argue. though the earlier tracks might have been more rough in aspects of sound betty is still a masterpiece compared to most of the crap which has been released since the mid of the Nineties.

Helmet was (was) a great band, but they're also responsible for influencing some really, really embarrassing music. In retrospect, yeah, it kind of was a waste of time.
Stanier is absolutely incredible! Super cool dude to boot. Stanier and Paige really need to reunite, tour one more time and show todays pathetic excuses for "hard rock" how its done. Paige has been in no mans land without Stanier and Bogdan, not his fault though, you can't replace those two.

Great song from a great album by a great band. Though Helmet pretty much set the groundwork for all those nu-metal bands that came in the late 90's, there was one important difference between it and them: solos! Page totally rips man!
Yeah, they totally ripped this band off. I love nu-metal, but only the bands like this. Ones that really "get down". I'm so tired of today's cheesy nu-metal talking about "breaking down", or whatever. So fucking lame....
This Mid 90s Stewart show was awesome. It had retarded sketches were Stewart looked like he was stoned, cool interviews and just unbelievable bands. Stuff that would never fly nowadays on network TV. Basically Stewart booked bands that he liked and didn't give a fuck about record labels and network executives.
I saw HELMET a couple months ago in Malibu, CA. It was the first time I ever had a chance to seem them live but I've rocked out to them since the early 90's. This band is still one of my favorites(even if Page Hamilton is the only original band member left).
guitarist rob echeverria used to play for new york hardcore bands Straight Ahead, and Rest In Pieces. also in those 2 bands were armand and craig from Sick Of It All. awesome guitarist
This wipes the floor with all the nu-metal bands that came after. Every single one of those bands like Korn and so on ripped this off totally. Page Hamilton is a genius. This lot never got their due.
I agree. I think the guy is brilliant. He an Stanier never got above the grunge noise (speaking as a Seattle native). This stuff is still brilliant 15 years later.
@tache3 Nice to know that somebody notices that not all 90's alternative metal was that dull "I'm so hardcore and rebellious!!1" nu metal like Slipknot and Korn.
@tache3 You think Korn ripped off these guys? Page Hamilton a genius? Get your ears checked bud. Im no trying to argue opinions, but that dude is not a genius and Korn never sounded a thing like them.

John used piccolo snares... big contribution to the "sound".
witzerdog 11 months ago
@witzerdog He never used a piccolo snare! Look at the video again, it´s a regular sized snare like 14"x6".
But he pitched it as high as possible with spezial coats and played his snare with hugh rimshots.
I never heard such a perfect snare sound again like the one on the "Betty" recordings...
