  • Damn I love the syncopation. That's what made Helmet so great.

  • Stanier is awesome!

  • "This is totally kick ass!" Need's to be more music like this man!

  • When I hear Page and guitar in the same sentence, I think Page Hamilton not Jimmy.

    Kick ass guitarist.

  • Just saw them last night...they still rock just as hard!!!!!

  • pissed off rock from the 90's = good

  • Love how Page looks like a random dad picked up in the neighbourhood and thrown on stage

  • @XJohnny91X omg hahahahahahah youre right

  • Sorry for the typo..

  • why has everything got be fucking pigeon-holed?

  • in 1992 I saw Helmet and Quicksand one night and Jesus Lizard and Laughing Hyenas the next at Metro in Chicago. Both sold out, both amazing shows with out of control pits from wall to wall, for $10 each.

1992 was pretty fun that weekend.

  • The lead singer looks like Bryan Cranston!

  • drummer looks like michael keaton

  • HOLY BASS!! Was at the new england metal festival yesterday and not one band had that much low end going for them. Would love to see Helmet live!!

(Are they still good live with the new lineup? Do they play older stuff in the set?)

  • @nyrangers731 Yep, they still sound great and play their old stuff

  • Helmet rules and all, but the Jon Stewart show was the shit!!!

  • @DrunkenOJ Amen brother. Man 94 was a pretty good year, life kinda went down from there.

  • John used piccolo snares... big contribution to the "sound".

  • @witzerdog He never used a piccolo snare! Look at the video again, it´s a regular sized snare like 14"x6".

But he pitched it as high as possible with spezial coats and played his snare with hugh rimshots.

I never heard such a perfect snare sound again like the one on the "Betty" recordings...

  • @OliVentura Kevlar? Popular in that period. Wil Calhoun used Kevlar heads at that time too.

  • @pleaseutube its not punk :/

  • Page with hair!

  • They look like lovely college boys! I freakin love it. This song is a classic and they rip the place up live!

  • f'ing 17 years old, and still completely awesome. Helmet is the shit.

  • helmet is unique in their own groovy way.. they can be group in alt metal,,post hardcore to be specific..i dunno why some said nu metal... idiotic

  • Everybody, enough with the pathetic attempts at trying to label this amazing organized sound. How can one say it is a particular pre labelled style without having a decent argument that it sounds like another. It's not any one style but it's own. Helmet just simply is............and that's that. Pioneers of music. This line up was magic, they all bounce both together and off each other so effortlessly despite how much work they would have put in to be so tight. Enormous pounding groove, happy t

  • i notice "ian crall" still doing there acorn latch of a spy cam. i missed jon stewart 100th episode that also had helmet.

  • FODÁTICO O SOM !!!

  • HELMET fuck this song is amazing. they were really good when i saw them last month when they played here still amazing!!!!

  • @tache3 how the fuck did korn rip off helmet? lol

  • @grungefreak94

maybe some of the guitar hooks / rhythm techniques that defined helmet so well are taken over by korn. i kinda agree here but korn was original enough to take it further (at least on their first 2 albums, it went quite downhill after those (imo))

    influences aren't bad.

  • @vi54 very well stated, korn let themselves go after their self titled album and life is peachy

  • MORE DRUMS AND SNARE IN THE MIX THANKS YOUTUBE YOU CUNT

  • That whole album is a flat-out masterpiece from start to finish. Great band, great songwriter, great sound on the guitars, great drummer and FUCKING GREAT snare sound!! Helmet should've been A LOT bigger than they were.

  • This isn't nu metal at all....

  • Wow Page with hair >_<

  • Why the constant references to nu-metal? This is not nu-metal. This is 90's Alternative metal.

  • Page looks funny with hair ^.^

  • nu metal kids, watch this video and learn listening to good music.

  • Thank you Page

  • he had some good musical guests on that show. still waiting to see the white zombie one.

  • Well, Page doesn't like the band to be label anyway. But he has those metal riffs and punk rock feeling for sure. Everyone mostly knows Helmet as an alternative metal band but I guess everyone has their opinion. I, myself don't see them as a punk rock band but they just mix in different stuff so it's just called Helmet.

  • Comment removed

  • ditto to everything you said. that show was great. faith no more, helmet, manson WAY before they were famous.

  • great drummer with helmet , always got a great sound out of that snare he had

  • Personally, I love that the bass is more in your face, it's one of Helmet's signature sounds.

  • john stanier rules

  • I didn't see this when it aired...but when this show moved to syndicated TV, Helmet was on again. They did Rollo then In the Meantime during the credits. I recorded it at the time but lost the tape many many years ago. I sure hope it surfaces some day cause Rollo is such a rarely performed song...let alone a live TV version! I bet Bogdan has a copy.

  • i remember this. crazy

  • the last minute is progressive and powerful as only

Helmet can do ! Fucking amazing with Rob Echeverria !

  • Fucking Awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • don't think that there's pretty much to argue. though the earlier tracks might have been more rough in aspects of sound betty is still a masterpiece compared to most of the crap which has been released since the mid of the Nineties.

  • Fantastic! Ending....Spectacular solo by Hamilton. I was a sophomore when this album was released. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.......good times. Good music.

  • when jon stewart had a cool show.....check out quicksand when they did "thorn in my side"...very cool

  • Yeah, except its one of their best albums. dumbass

  • It's their top-40 pop album. Not saying it's bad, just liked them more when they were scarier. Cocknuts.

  • yeah you actually used to have to be good....now its all just pro tools

  • This sounds so close to the studio version. Damn... amazing. I feared for a moment that they were faking the playing.

    These dudes rock.

  • crappy mix bass way to loud. but this is a great tune

  • no ... bass is good treble sucks

  • yes bass is great, but when the bass is overriding 2 guitars its a crappy mix dude

  • It's not "overriding" them, it's the same volume. As it should be.

  • translation: bass is audible.

I think the mix is quite good, for that reason. All instruments can be clearly heard.

  • This was actually one of the cool things about Helmet...

They realized early (relative to a lot of their contemporary rock bands) that it would be cool to actually hear the bass...

  • Wow, I'm watching these clips of when Jon Stewart had an MTV show and it seems like it was awesome!

  • wonder if Jon was or is a fan of heavier music.

  • I was a teenager in the mid 90's and that lineup was one of my favorite bands of all time to see live and to listen to even today. such a solid band, the godfathers of dirverock

  • i remember seeing these guys in 96. They played this song and all hell broke loose, awsome show.

  • one cannot deny the awesomeness of the early 90's rock scene.

it was a renaissance of hard rock.

  • @squeedum I fucken love you too.

  • these guys fuckin rock

  • yeaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

  • when i grow up, i want to play drumms like stainer some day......

    helmetarmyofmexico

  • another mexican helmet fan !! HELMET MANDA

  • from what I remember Page Hamilton was a very well trained musician and most of his peers think he wasted his talent by playing hard rock.

  • HIs peers being who ... his friends that could solo but never put an outfit like HELMET together

He wasted his time creating a sound that influenced many a band and still loves playing it live 20 years after the fact ... That my friend is not a waste of time

  • I like him but I've read he was even better at improv jazz but never took it seriously.

  • Sometimes the best are the ones that don't take it to seriously... Some are just that talented .... and we should all remember .. just cause you're good at something doesn't mean that it's what "you" want to do for the rest of your life

    Anyways enough of that :)

  • I love his voice - so powerful and full of attitude.

  • I'm seeing them Saturday.Actually I'm seeing Paige Hamilton and 3 guys he brought in Saturday .They need to get the original cast back.

  • God i miss these guys...seen them three times in '96...in small venues too...Stanier is the shiate on the skins!

  • Stanier is absolutely incredible! Super cool dude to boot. Stanier and Paige really need to reunite, tour one more time and show todays pathetic excuses for "hard rock" how its done. Paige has been in no mans land without Stanier and Bogdan, not his fault though, you can't replace those two.

  • Youre right there!! Stanier is a thrashing machine on the drums. Can notice the difference with out him!

  • i love the 90's.

  • This is pretty atypical of the 90s, what with being good and all...

  • Bleach blond Stanier typically tight as hell.

  • Yeah, the original formula was a tight knit unit..powerhouse listening...one of my favourite bands for sure...

  • Fucken hell turquoiseavenger.Your right.Still sounds fresh eh!I wish they got more radio airplay.Either way their fanbaseis HUGE and LOYAL..this session sounds like the album..nice n clean..HELMET RULES

  • Exactly my thoughts! damnit they were good even back then! just saw him for the first time ever this yeah, AMAZING!

  • This footage is 14 years old... sounds as new as ever

  • Helmet has always been ahead of their time.

  • rockin'

  • "honestly, i fucking read once" ... went uncensored? sweeeeeet.

  • hehe...Its "Honestly, a book you read once"

  • Such a tight band live!!! Listen to the guitar tone!! This new shite can't even come close.

  • man, jon stewart had some awesome bands on his shows apparently

  • I worship at the throne of HELMET.

  • Great song from a great album by a great band. Though Helmet pretty much set the groundwork for all those nu-metal bands that came in the late 90's, there was one important difference between it and them: solos! Page totally rips man!

  • Yeah, they totally ripped this band off. I love nu-metal, but only the bands like this. Ones that really "get down". I'm so tired of today's cheesy nu-metal talking about "breaking down", or whatever. So fucking lame....

  • they also played meantime as the credits rolled, short but sweet

  • They played "Milquetoast" as the credits rolled

  • This Mid 90s Stewart show was awesome. It had retarded sketches were Stewart looked like he was stoned, cool interviews and just unbelievable bands. Stuff that would never fly nowadays on network TV. Basically Stewart booked bands that he liked and didn't give a fuck about record labels and network executives.

  • I saw HELMET a couple months ago in Malibu, CA. It was the first time I ever had a chance to seem them live but I've rocked out to them since the early 90's. This band is still one of my favorites(even if Page Hamilton is the only original band member left).

  • that band is one of the best that i ever see, its incredible. you re right tommythecat00, page s voice as changed...

  • compare this to recent concerts and you see how much page's voice has been wrecked.

still, i saw them last year and they still tore the place to shreds. love helmet.

  • mannnn page with hair. how awesome

  • guitarist rob echeverria used to play for new york hardcore bands Straight Ahead, and Rest In Pieces. also in those 2 bands were armand and craig from Sick Of It All. awesome guitarist

  • Rob Echeverria is my trainer and hes played at my house.

    He is really good!

  • Stanier - what a timekeeper.

  • Great performance, I agree. I think Page and the Meantime formation were just geniuses.

  • This wipes the floor with all the nu-metal bands that came after. Every single one of those bands like Korn and so on ripped this off totally. Page Hamilton is a genius. This lot never got their due.

  • I agree. I think the guy is brilliant. He an Stanier never got above the grunge noise (speaking as a Seattle native). This stuff is still brilliant 15 years later.

  • @tache3 I fucken love you.

  • @tache3 Nice to know that somebody notices that not all 90's alternative metal was that dull "I'm so hardcore and rebellious!!1" nu metal like Slipknot and Korn.

  • @tache3 he kinda reminds me of the sting of numetal

  • @tache3 You think Korn ripped off these guys? Page Hamilton a genius? Get your ears checked bud. Im no trying to argue opinions, but that dude is not a genius and Korn never sounded a thing like them.

  • @tache3 But Helmet isn't nu-metal.... :/

    They're stoner metal...

  • @Aztek92 stoner metal? as if. There may be rythum but it just doesn't have the groove of "stoner metal".

  • @ms1600 idk man, im pretty stoned and this is grooving like a mother fucker.

  • Nice. Love these guys.

  • wow, sik rhythm n bass!!

  • fucking sweet

  • Thanks for posting this. Sick performance
