I met Sensei Mijailovic when I went to a seminar with Master Tak Kubota. He has trained with Master Kubota for a long time and it is not Shotokan Karate Do they teach any longer. But they both are excellnet individuals and excellent teachers.
he's lucky cause he has strong arms and can do effective long rage punches, I'm not that strong and I have to use the body when I strike that means only short rage for me
He seems like a great competitor, but Kubota's Gosokuryu is not quite Shotokan,it is his own system with components of shotokan and other styles mixed in. Obviously a solid system.
Shotokan is of Japanese origin, after the father of modern karate as usually reffered to, Gichin Funakoshi moved from Okinawa to Japan to teach the art. He was also a calligrapher, with the pen name of "Shoto". "Kan" meaning "house", Shotokan means: The House of Shoto.
Kara Te - the original meaning was Chinese Hand. Later on Funakoshi changed the meaning, since the Japanese sign "Kara" that meant "Chinese" also meant "empty" and 'Kara-Te-Do', 'The Way Of The Empty Hand' was a much better way to express the real meaning. Thus the influence came from Chinese Martial Arts masters that went to Okinawa, there Karate developed as a mixture of lokal martial arts and Chinese boxing influences. As for Shotokan Karate, it is like djangelopepe said. Shoto = "pine waves"
I do Chinese martial arts. From the similarities of kung fu (Chinese martial arts as they're nowadays referred to) with okinawan and shotokan karate, I can safely say that Vaeinamoeinen is right.

This is the Karate Do pre-WKF until this organization distroyed what real Karate Do is!!
Now you see all those guys doing massive Tae Kwon Do kicking and cowards when they get hit.
This is one of the many reasons my style Renbukai Karate Do does not and refuse to prostitute itself by being a member of this organization.
Master Mijailovic is a perfect example of what real Karate Do was, is and will always be. All of my respect to him and master Kubota. OSU

"According to WKF now Shotokan karate Became Sports"
Because WKF is a sports federation. But traditional Shotokan schools still exist. Non-sport karate is the real thing. Osu.
