Imagine what Eammon Couglan's 3:49 at the Wannamaker would have been on a modern outdoor track (3:44??). So many great races have been wasted on indoor tracks..in Europe the best guys train through winter to peak outdoors.
Coughlan never ran 3:49 at Millrose I am pretty sure -- he did run an indoor 3:39 in New Jersey I think. He was always faster indoors - unlike virtually everyone else
NYS record, his acceleration is out of this world, so tactical, if he had just run this for the time not for the place, def cudda gone like 4:07ish....
I can't believe stahr fought off each challenge like that. that kind of tactic is usually suicidal but somehow it worked for him

when he finished he wasn't even breathing hard or anything! if i ran somewhere around 10 seconds behind my PR, I would still be pretty tired...
it's amazing how fast these great runners can recover. i'm going to be like that one day.
