A minor exception to this is that most of the horse slaughtered for pet or human consumption, are NOT sick, old or crippled! And they are fattened up at a feedlot before slaughter, like cattle. Most of the horses, horrifyingly, are young and healthy, throwaways from the big & small breeders, families losing interest or their jobs, stolen horses, etc. Your horse has a high probability of ending up as food if you auction your horse!! Always ask for a vet reference and check facilities to sell.
Well the difference between slaughter and euthanasia is simple. Slaughter is directly tied to the marketability of other horses. This is why the horse market tanked so badly after the U.S banned horse slaughter. The base level was gone and that just put more horses into the hands of kill buyers. The horses that did not get picked up by the kill buyers the first time. Endure some abuse that made the "conceived" abuse that was "supposedly" happening in the states look like Sunday church
The slaughter horses you show probably went to pet food or by-product use, for human consumption, they are usually fat & sleek from being feedlotted, like cattle. Which makes it even more horrible, as they are usually sound & young!!
Regardless, though, this is a wonderful vid, and horses are out pets and should be treated as a beloved pet at the end, same compassion as for a dog or a cat.
Well done, do more like this please, educate people!!!!
Hate to tell you guys but euthansia is actually not that humane. Its a chemical released into the animals body that painfully stops the vitals. That takes minutes to react. Where actually a bullet to the head is the humanest, quickest way.A few seconds. They barely hear the shot and drop as soon as it enters the cranium. Now tell me which is more human, minutes or seconds?
@appyluv actually, the correct way to euthanize a horse is by sedating first. nothing about slaughter is humane and if it weren't for the text limit on comments, I would go into detail.
@whitestarline08 Sedation doesn't do much. My horses get a sedation once(twice depending how bad their teeth get) they still know whats going on and are fully aware, Which is better- a death thats quick and painless and you barely know,or one that takes longer and you are fully aware? Also I never said it was humane, just that a bullet is...Read more carefully I suggest.

Have any of you ever been present when a horse is put down by so called humane euthanasia? I have and I didn't think it was so humane. I watched my horse as she struggled for her final breaths. I am not saying that suffering is good just pointing out my own observations. The last horse we had to put down we used a shot gun and there was no suffering it was fast no fighting for a last breath I realize that this will probably make some people angry.

Good editing and great pic of the horse with the phone and flag at the end. Please fix the many typos and misspellings though, they are distracting from the content and message.
Explaining that the average cost of euthanasia is about the same as for a dog in most states, and that the average price an owner gets is so low that the "swing" is about $400. Few non-commercial horse owners are that broke.
Horribly depressing, but this is really what people need to see. We definately need to find a way to end lives of horses that are suffering, or will suffer from abandonment. However, slaughter is NOT the way to go.
I Britain we have two horse slaughterhouses;in both the horse is treated individualy;it is led into a pen similar to a loose box and shot with a modified rifle [it has an "upside down trigger mechanism" so that the horse cannot see it].It is not "stunned" but killed outright..if the horses owner has deliverd the horse then after it has been killed the "owner" can sit with its body to say "goodbye"!.
Im pro slaughter and Im not trying to hide that the methods are inhumane. The methods are inhumane but that doesnt mean slaughter needs to be stopped, not right now. If slaughter is stopped the effects from that will be far worse.
whats worse than killing a horse with a stun gun without even doing it correctly after starving it and causing it unecessary suffering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only because owners starve them before they send there horses to slaughter.
Why would slaughter houses starve there horses? that doesnt even make sence! A skinny horse isnt gonna bring very much money they have no meat on there bones!
If you want to know my point of view.. like i said.. watch my vid!
I do understand what your thinking but you have to admit the slaughter houses dont exactly do much in the way of caring for the horses on the way to the house, they cram them in cattle trucks with no stops, food or water....i shall watch your video only at your request, i still think its barbaric and horrible, no matter what...horses have helped me so much i could never hurt them like that.
Some euthanasias are not that simple. That was unusual that the horse kept standing. If it is done right, they usually tense up and slam over on their side.
wait wait wait do people who drive the trucks get a choice to drive those truck because if I was driving one of those I would just drive far away and then let all of the horses free
OMG thats the sweetest thing I have ever heard. I would do the same. Go to montana in the wild and let them run free. The drivers could probably do that but they are getting paid big bucks so thats all they care about.
And let them fend for themselves??? Some slaughter horses are formerly domesticated and wouldn't have a clue on where to find better grass or water unlike wild horses. Death from starvation and disease is much worse than a quick death in a slaughter house. Just fix the practices. That's all you gotta do...
That was awful to see, even though I know it exists. I adopted 2 PMU foals a while back. Never really new what an awful ending they could have faced. I'm going to the barn now to watch they play in their field.
In regards the over horse population in the United states, that is a MYTH.
Only 1% of the total American Horse Population is sent to slaughter. About 100,000 annually.
ALSO, people are simply breeding their horses for slaughter now as well, to make a buck.
Anyone who thinks that Horse Slaughter is necessary I invite to TRULY study & discuss the issue with me. I welcome you with open arms & a clear state of mind. I have studied this issue inside & out.
Anyone that slaughters or euthanizes any animal is a sick mother fucker. This includes but it not limited to animal shelter euthanasia technicians at animal shelters. They are the sickest of the sick.
who would have put down our pony of 14 years when he was kicked in the paddock then and broke a leg? are we sick for calling him out to end our ponies life? get a grip, they are neccessary to prevent a lot of suffering to horses
What are you saying the vet out the pony down or you sent it to slaughter? We are for humane euthanasia it is slaughter for human consumption that we are against not putting an animals out of it's pain.
Great Job!I read some of the comments. and some I like others I think are trush . I know for a fact that Mexico slaughter horses in just that way. and it is sick. Horses are beautiful animals and were not put on the Earth to be eaten thay areto be ridien and loved and to work in fields .and work horses love to do there job. I loved your video keep up the Great work
But it is necessary. We dont need to ban slaughter we just need to make it more humane for the animal. The horse is overpopulated in our country and no slaughter leads to horses dying in back yards because the owners cant afford euthinasia. To rid the US of excess horses we need to dispose of those who are too old, too wild and just useless. Castration needs to be less exspensive to prevent more unwanted/low quality foals maybe the gov needs to step in.
We need the back yard breeders and the careless owners to step up to the plate and not take the cheap route.Horses have always come into the auctions starved and neglected only they got paid for it.We intend to take away that insentive for them:)
You'll still have all the horses starving in peoples back yards because they wont be able to afford that route. The US needs to have large scale euthinasia and fixing, euth the horses that arent going to make anything and castrate all those not worthy of being bred. All mares and stallions should have to be approved to be bred.
Due to the prevention of USA slaughter, horses are now suffering a much longer ride and unhumane slaughter. We can't fix slaughter unless we reinstate it. Captive bolts are used in CA and the USA, not stabbing. However, if the horses got hay, water and didn't travel for 8 days. Slaughter may not be such a touchy subject for me. Think about it, more slaughter houses, less travel! Feel free to message me. Watch my 'beauty of equines' video. It's a video on ways to prevent slaughter.
do you know how big the u.s. is? how many days do you think it takes to travel from texas to mexico? how about michigan to texas? the u.s. didn't regulate it when it was here. that is past. captive bolts were often not just one to the head either. in slaughter houses and on transport within the u.s. back then, horses were often abused. the double decker trailers were not whipped out especially for mexico and canada.
What a magnficent job you did to demonstrate so beautifully the difference between slaughter and euthanasia. You have done a great service for our horses in dispelling the myth that the slaughter of horses is humane. Bravo!
What a magnficent job you did to demonstrate so beautifully the difference between slaughter and euthanasia. You have done a great service for our horses in dispelling the myth that the slaughter of horses is humane. Bravo!
Did you really think the slaughter industry would take the ban in the U.S lying down? These horses are travelling miles because YOU stopped it in the U.S, you didnt do horses any favors. A matter where thinking with your head and not your heart would have been smarter, and perhaps banning live export FIRST. I do not support slaughter, but surely you had an idea what would happen when it was banned!
everyone some can kill a horse can kill a person. Becuse they know that horses have feelings, and so do people have. I live in swe and i dont know how horse slagther is but i hope its better becuse ww have more harder laws...Hope you understad what im whriting becuse im not good at it haha
Sadly we can improve conditions at slaughter houses, and ban Live Export, but it would be stupud to end horse slaughter because where do all the 150,000 horses go? I would rather them be destroyed, then suffer from ragwort poisoning, or completley neglected, as that is a far more lingering death.
banning it in one country will only mean the horses have to travel further to the next slaughter house, its already happened in the US
When HR503 passes they will no longer be shipped into Mexico and Canada. We must stiffen cruelty laws so people can not get paid for abuse and neglect of their horses
Im afraid they are not 'stabbed in the back' at all. They are knocked out with a stun gun, which then allows only 45 seconds for them to be blooded. It would be pointless 'stabbing them in the back' as it would spoil the meat
Before the American horse slaughter houses closed they used the captive bolt gun but now they are shipped to Mexico and Canada.Canada shoots them,Mexico severs the spinal cord
I hope that this video segment shows people the difference between the humane death that chemical euthanization represents as compared to what happens at the slaughter houses (anything but humane). I've seen the full video on the Mexican slaughter house and it's truly horrible, barbaric. Please support HR 503 and S 311 to ban horse slaughter!
Should horses be thrown away, incinerated, what? Respectfully, what should be do with horses when they are not suitable to use in some other way. Stopping all slaughter is a good idea, but it remains that we raise horses to use, we eat horses, use their hide and bones for food, glue, clothing, etc. Their hair for violin bows--take your excellent argument a bit further. You're not suggesting what we should do with these humanely slaughtered livestock.
Shelter them - home them - don't breed and throw away LIFE ! Pretty simple in the long term isn't it - people must become responsible and stop being so selfish and greedy with these lives - and humanely slaughtered ? My how you DON'T KNOW - from the time they are ' thrown out ' to the slaughter house there is nothing HUMANE going on ! The reason we have this problem is because they are bred and then THROWN AWAY !
With all due respect, horses bodies can be disposed of in many ways, they can be buried using a backhoe in their own pasture, they can be sent on to a rendering company where the dead body will be rendered into things such as fertilizer, they can be creamated and have their ashes spread or contained in a container or a cardboard box whichever the owner chooses, and last but not least, they can be composted. Depends on the law in the owner's area. It's not the dilemma that they make it out to be
I'm not sure how realistic this hospice for livestock system is, however. It sounds nice, that we should give our farm animals pine box funerals, geriatric care, etc. Your suggestion for rendering is very realistic--the animals become bone meal for other animals, fertilizer and various by-products. Livestock are raised for food and by-products--and some for service or pets. I agree that seeing the slaughter raises our awareness and thus causes us to confront our way of doing things.
For animals who are here not by their own choice but because they were at most, brought into this world for personal and selfish gains - this talk is very undignified - this is how we say thank you for the years - for the money you made us - for the pleasure you have given our children !! ?? I will consider this subject when my rescued pony's have died from OLD AGE !
Your horse has a high probability of ending up as food if you auction your horse!! do you know how big the u.s. is? how many days do you think it takes to travel from texas to mexico? how about michigan to texas? the u.s. didn't regulate it when it was here. that is past. captive bolts were often not just one to the head either. in slaughter houses and on transport within the u.s. back then, horses were often abused. the double decker trailers were not whipped out especially for mexico and canada.

What a magnficent job you did to demonstrate so beautifully the difference between slaughter and euthanasia. You have done a great service for our horses in dispelling the myth that the slaughter of horses is humane.

It would be pointless 'stabbing them in the back' as it would spoil the meat
nimrodty 4 years ago
I am afraid you do not know how they kill them in Mexico.Type in horse slaughter severing the spines in Mexico and you will see how they do it
dougsgirl63 4 years ago
Before the American horse slaughter houses closed they used the captive bolt gun but now they are shipped to Mexico and Canada.Canada shoots them,Mexico severs the spinal cord

The above images of slaughter are from the US, not Mexico, Claiming that the US uses such method of slaugher is incorrect.

Very well done! Now we just need the right people to see this. The people who don't care! Keep up the excellent work!

True!

Thank you for all the time you put into trying to stop this horrible way to kill the American horses.
