i was having a coffee with mike last week, i was bass player with the shevells

till 1964 when i joined london band "the riot squad" with drummer mitch mitchell

mac mcarthy went on bass then,who has sadly died,after the shevells split, mike

joined tom jones, squires and was offered, by gorden mills, to record a new written

song, which mike refused (did,nt like it) the song was recorded by someone else

the song was "pround mary"----oh well

Shevells - one of the best unsung bands from the mid-sixties. Mike Stevens, great soul voice and showman. My band worked through the same agency and counted the "Boys" as drinking buddies in 1965/6/7 in west London and Flamingo Club. Mike going on to do great things in Welsh, of course, and still does...

It may suprise some people, but I know Mike. I have known him for about a year now and it was by chance a couple of months back that I found out about this song and Mike's little career! A really nice guy and I love hearing his stories although I have to prise the out of him as he's quite shy about who he knows from the circuit. Top man Mike!
