Why do people talk of MMA here? boxing is better, it has more style and technique, MMA fighters dont have the technique in boxing like a boxer and even dont have technique in kicks like taekwondo fighters. they are half in everything ( Tyson would have knocked out in 10 seconds the MMA fighter that you want ). @rugby2413 Well, I think Toney is a bad example. The dude's pretty washed up and we're talking a prime Ali or Tyson. Plus, we're talking two years, not nine months. It's true that boxing/karate/etc have to change to succeed in mma, but not because of the rules. You could enter the cage and fight pure boxing. You'd just lose because cross-style fighting is better than boxing. However an mma man in a boxing ring has to toss out 80% of his stuff because the actual rules insist it.
@rugby2413 See, I disagree. Boxing doesn't have to change for mma. It should, but it doesn't have to. If you don't want to get taken down, you'll change your game a bit, but that just shows an advantage grppling has over striking. I think two years would be enough for some signifficant success. I'm pretty sure that's more than Cro Cop had when he started mma. Obviously he kept training it and got better as Ali or Tyson would have to, but two years should be plenty for those guys to have success.

See, in mma Ali would be allowed to use his full arsenal, whereas in boxing Cain Velasquez (for example) would only be able to use about 20% of his arsenal. Hence you could say the mma man is the better fighter because in a venue where both are allowed to use their full arsenals, the mma man wins. However, give a prime Ali two years to work on his bjj and wrestling and you'd see him wreck in mma.

Also if you check his record, these defeats came after Muhammad Ali was banned from boxing for 3 years for not wanting to kill innocent people in Vietnam. Also, the other two people who defeated Ali were Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick, Ali was 38 years old when he faced them, clearly passed his prime.

@akosihelbert Ali never was beaten in his prime. Lee didn't fight in pro tourneys, so we don't know how good he was.Maybe he did win all his street fights, maybe he hardly had any at all? Who knows? I do know that Lee once said: the fastest hands I have ever seen belong to a black man. I think he was referring to Ali, because he saw him. Lee's fastest punch was in 0.05 seconds, Ali's was in 0.04 (phantom punch) but I think Lee wins in MMA.
@seblasian I only heard that Lee knew about Ali, not robinson, because Lee watched and studied Ali's William fight over and over. And According to Jim Jacobs, Ali was faster than Robinson, according to an analysis of the tapes.
@carmodifire Oh no question about it, especially since Robinson was already a legend at that time while Ali was still in the middle of his carreer- and like I said, Robinson's style was really the blueprint for Ali's. Very interesting about that tape analysis though, I'll look it up sometime.
Wouldnt surprise me very much though, Ali was all about speed and agility while Robinson was a more balanced fighter in the sense that he had KO power in either hand.

Dundee said that Ali's speed remained the same, but his power and skill was improving at an incredible rate. I think that, even though SRR is #1, Ali would have been the best. Ali-Frazier in 69-70 would have been the best ever.
@carmodifire Muhammad Ali is the greatest heavyweight ever, however, what we see of SRR, are his fights in his late 20's we never got to see what he was in his prime, only little clips, Muhammad Ali was a great boxer, and he had a stiff jab, but he didn't have the same power with both hands that SRR had, he could knock you out with both hands, Sugar Ray Robinson is the best, but Muhammad Ali is definitely up there.

Why do people talk of MMA here? boxing is better, it has more style and technique, MMA fighters dont have the technique in boxing like a boxer and even dont have technique in kicks like taekwondo fighters. they are half in everything ( Tyson would have knocked out in 10 seconds the MMA fighter that you want ). @rugby2413 Well, I think Toney is a bad example. The dude's pretty washed up and we're talking a prime Ali or Tyson. Plus, we're talking two years, not nine months. It's true that boxing/karate/etc have to change to succeed in mma, but not because of the rules. You could enter the cage and fight pure boxing. You'd just lose because cross-style fighting is better than boxing. However an mma man in a boxing ring has to toss out 80% of his stuff because the actual rules insist it.

@rugby2413 See, I disagree. Boxing doesn't have to change for mma. It should, but it doesn't have to. If you don't want to get taken down, you'll change your game a bit, but that just shows an advantage grppling has over striking. I think two years would be enough for some signifficant success. I'm pretty sure that's more than Cro Cop had when he started mma. Obviously he kept training it and got better as Ali or Tyson would have to, but two years should be plenty for those guys to have success.

@rugby2413 True, except there is something to be said for the fact that Ali would lose in the UFC. See, in mma Ali would be allowed to use his full arsenal, whereas in boxing Cain Velasquez (for example) would only be able to use about 20% of his arsenal. Hence you could say the mma man is the better fighter because in a venue where both are allowed to use their full arsenals, the mma man wins. However, give a prime Ali two years to work on his bjj and wrestling and you'd see him wreck in mma.

Also if you check his record, these defeats came after Muhammad Ali was banned from boxing for 3 years for not wanting to kill innocent people in Vietnam. Also, the other two people who defeated Ali were Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick, Ali was 38 years old when he faced them, clearly passed his prime.

@akosihelbert Ali never was beaten in his prime. Lee didn't fight in pro tourneys, so we don't know how good he was.Maybe he did win all his street fights, maybe he hardly had any at all? Who knows? I do know that Lee once said: the fastest hands I have ever seen belong to a black man. I think he was referring to Ali, because he saw him. Lee's fastest punch was in 0.05 seconds, Ali's was in 0.04 (phantom punch) but I think Lee wins in MMA.

@carmodifire Oh no question about it, especially since Robinson was already a legend at that time while Ali was still in the middle of his carreer- and like I said, Robinson's style was really the blueprint for Ali's. Very interesting about that tape analysis though, I'll look it up sometime.
Wouldnt surprise me very much though, Ali was all about speed and agility while Robinson was a more balanced fighter in the sense that he had KO power in either hand.

Dundee said that Ali's speed remained the same, but his power and skill was improving at an incredible rate. I think that, even though SRR is #1, Ali would have been the best. Ali-Frazier in 69-70 would have been the best ever.

@carmodifire Muhammad Ali is the greatest heavyweight ever, however, what we see of SRR, are his fights in his late 20's we never got to see what he was in his prime, only little clips, Muhammad Ali was a great boxer, and he had a stiff jab, but he didn't have the same power with both hands that SRR had, he could knock you out with both hands, Sugar Ray Robinson is the best, but Muhammad Ali is definitely up there.

@laxxxxxxen The reason why I say that no-one will be greater than Ali or Lee is because it's almost sacrilegious to compare these two fighters to anyone else in the fighting world today. You don't touch the legends. I still believe that Ali and Bruce lee would kick Anderson Silvas ass any day of the week.

And what they saw was, white people, acting like animals, in fact, even animals act better than they did. And Muhammad Ali did both, he inspired the young, of any race, and he was a leader. Yes, he did preach negativity, but he was young. When he matured, his opinion changed. And he didnt want to fight for the "white people" who enlslaved black people, beat them,raped them.

@oldschoolpomp And would you fight, if those same people asked you too. Did you know what they did at Vietnam? They raped, killed civilians. Dropped bombs which humanily mutated their genetics. I saw disturbing images in my history class last year. Muhammad Ali didnt want to fight for the people who treated his race with such hate, he didnt want to help them to enslave yet another country. And yea, he did get paid for fighting, but he didnt murder them, rape them, and treated them as subhumans.
