I love this group,.but this song is only great by Dream Academy. They made it feel as if something within you was crying out for times long lost. This version is way too honky tonk.
Beautiful cover. Nicely done. And to sum up a lot of confusion about the origins of the song, it was written by the Dream Academy consisting of Nick Laird-Clowes, Gilbert Gabriel, and Kate St. John as an elegy (a mournful, melancholic or plaintive poem, especially a funeral song or a lament for the dead) for singer/songwriter Nick Drake. Beautiful Song.
@gwenny3080 holy cats I LOVE Nick Drake. I'm REALLY gonna have to Investigate Dream Academy, now. It's one of those haunting old songs of my childhood
whoever the guy is at1:25 is such a redneck douchebag... maybe God allowed the stadium to collapse on these guys because they do such a disservice to good music...
@flycentro123 my point is that what you like and what others like is not always the same thing...and you need to learn to accept it. publicly calling someone a 'redneck douchbag' because you personally don't happen to like him isn't really the way forward. think about it....
Seriously, girls....settle down. Way too all over the place, take your personal issues elsewhere. Girl up, name-calling, invoking God; really? Poster has no clue of life, obviously, just put all the crap in one bag. Seriously. Break it down. Redneck douchebag (?). God allowed (?) Disservice to good music (?). Yikes. Just throw all in about which one has no clue....
Much better than the original, has more soul and captures the spirit better. Just because its about a brittish town doesnt mean it doesnt apply to any other post war town.
@TheZaclight Respond to this video... characters remaining this song is actually about a British singer song writer Nick Drake who suffered frm depression & died very young, I actually like both the original version & this one. I think the harmonies are better in the original
I stand by my comments. Yes, you can draw a loose comparison to life in a northern eastern state...Penn, WVA comes to mind with the coal mines. But it was more than that. And certainly Miss Sugraland never heard of any of that. My point has been, and will be, when music is written beacuse of hardship and strife give it respect and due. OH and BTW.....I MISS YOU BUCKLEY'S ANGEL!

@robandrene I think Americans who live in the South know a little bit about having their factories shut down and holding on to their way of life with all they have. We're kind of known for it. Most of our country bands have touched on the subject a time or two.
Uhm, not to suggest you are just the slightest bit uninformed, but the genre of music they play has nothing to do with what they have experienced or understand, and neither does their nationality. Do you really think lack of sympathy from the government is limited tot he UK? Have you read a news paper in the last- say- 12 years? Look around the world a bit!
@VABkWrm Because theyre American and country pop singers? Because they never grew up in the North of England and lived through post-war Britain? Because they never saw communities collapse because of a government who didnt care??
I absolutely loved the Dream Academy original, but I simply adore this one more and more every time I hear it. The original was an 80s classic, and couldn't belong to any other time. You hear it, and you think of the 80s. This is different. This is timeless. The vocal harmonies are stunning. Sure, it has lost some of the link to the socioeconomic conditions that it was born from, but don't hold that against it - it's a different version of the song, for a different time, a different context.
folks dont like their memories messed around with...
the orginal was a stunning evocation of Britishness `The Beatles` and our bad winter of 63, set Margaret Thatchers bleak Britain , filmed in a real Northern Town sung by people who actually experienced it. Given our economic state, theirgibal would be agood rerelease this coming winter...
I heard Jeremy Vine interview Sugarland on BBC Radio 2 today, culminating in a live acoustic performance of this. I pulled over to listen, quite awestruck by what I heard. Very innovative adaptation of an already good song.
@lostincider You read my mind. I used to be in a band with my brother & cousins. There were six of us in the band with four lead vocalists. I could harmonize well with my bro and my cousin could harmonize well with her bro. In fact, I could harmonize well with the other three, but if we ever attempted to do a four-part, it would sound just like this.
A pretty good cover but when you cover somebody else's song then you need to give props to the group you covered. They FAILED to do so! That is total disrespect to the Dream Academy
i understand why people who were around back in the 80's may prefer the dream academy version, but i can't comprehend why anyone under the age of 30 would pick the 80's version over sugarland's take.
I can do without the tacky advertisement ('get the ringtone"...) on top, but I am a HUGE Dream Academy fan, I think this is a great 'tip of the hat' to the original... just "country-fied" =)
A learned, measured response...and I can argue with exactly none of it :)
The point, to my untrained ears, is that this many voices sound more like the community that these events happened to than a chorus of male voices, imho.
An adequate remake, you can recognize the tune. Version was antiseptic and showy with good voices but more an exercise in marketing than real collaboration. It is really pointless, and sounds disjointed, to have this many distinct voices shoved into one song.
I think Dream Academy's version had deeper and more dramatic base and more marked transitions and contrast, despite having fewer instruments / voices. As a pop song composition it made more sense.
@alycsch1515 Matter of opinion, I suppose.....Dream Academy's version sounds like the eunuchs at court in some awful 50's movie....but that's just my opinion ;-)
can you imagine being at a Live show with Sugarland and Lady Antebellum ? That would be CLASSIC!! and just might bump THE Outfield opening for Journey as my fav concert ever :P
