Free health care certainly is excellent for those who can not afford medical aid. And that is fine. But to out-law personally paying for health care is foolish. What benefit DO they get from it? They pay more, and the people they need and represent wait longer. What is the point? As "dmf41" said, allowing people to pay would shorten the waiting time, potentially saving lives.
WIth private opportunites, the rich pay for faster care FREEING up the queue for socialized care. Everyone does better, but the resentment of the poor for the rich who can pay out of pocket trumps medical well-being. And the politicians here have always taken advantage of it.
I went to doctor because I was having headaches, doctor sends me to ct scan.I waited 3 weeks. There were unclear spot and the doctor send me to mri and I waited under a week for that. I was there yesterday. Oh and I payed for all this 27 €. I live in Finland :)
This is interesting because I'm totally for a national healthcare because I have poor friends that have trouble with paying for healthcare. HOWEVER this is proof on how that system is also inefficient so we need to change our system however I am not so sure national healthcare is the answer. Thanks for the information.
@GeneralHasslehoff There is a non-"government take over" option. Allow medical companies to sell insurance plans across state lines. Currently, this is prevented by the US government. By opening this up many companies can compete and if understand economics quality of care will rise as cost decrease :)

Those who would attempt to prevent us from buying our own health care or insurance from willing sellers are violating our most basic and important rights.
How is that any different than an insurance company or HMO? Even at ti's worst, it's BETTER than the nothing that the poor uninsured get right now. The thing that people always leave out of this equation is that it sucks to get sick no matter what kind of insurance/money you have, so the best thing is to not get sick at all. Having the ability to see a doctor regularly and not have to worry about where the payment money is going to come from is the first step in that direction.
The government denies more claims and is more severe in its rationing than any private insurance, as verified by government statistics. Private insurance and private healthcare is always better than government-controlled insurance and government-controlled care.

You are right, mortgaging one's home is only an option for the 70% of Americans who are home owners, and most of them already have health insurance.
I have no problem with a taxpayer subsidy to buy poor people health insurance on the free market. This would cover the 20% of people who can not afford health insurance. But I object to throwing the rest of us in to a socialized system that will reduce our choices, be more inefficient, and result in lower quality care like the VA hospitals.

Well im 22 and on the last wednesday of july i was diagnosed with a tumor. this was on my free visit to the doctor. I live an hour from this guy!. I went to the same hospital he would have. St Michaels Hospital in Toronto. In one week i was diagnosed, had surgery and walked out of the hospital. no charge!! I love canadian Healthcare Our Private system is there too. Those dr's are called specialists.
Having been to MD Anderson for breast cancer treatment and seeing and meeting the huge number of Canadian AND Europeans there for treatment, you MUST question the viability of this plan Obama and the Democratic congress want to literally shove down our throats! If a person without insurance has these symptoms in America, they can walk into the ER and have the necessary tests made for diagnosis immediately, regardless of ability to pay. If they need the surgery, it will be done at a county or University hospital, regardless of ability to pay.

ERs stabilize immediately life threatening conditions, like traffic accidents, violent crime victims, etc. As soon as the person won't bleed to death they're out the door and with a bill that might bankrupt them. If you think the insurance companies are tough, just try and appeal a government mandate on the services considered 'free' under this basic plan. No doctor wants his treatments or pay mandated by government. There is a shortage of doctors in Canada now because many have gotten out of the business. It doesn't go to tax-payers actually. A portion does, which is balanced by the medicaid system that all tax-payers pay into. But it usually doesn't pay the entire bill, a cost the provider absorbs. THIS is what raises the cost of medical care. along with some greed, I'm sure we can all agree. If the government had control over a plan that was more like insurance than Medicaid is that everyone payed into, it would greatly mitigate this cost while providing health care for the currently uninsured.

This is a heartwrenching story. However, if a person has no insurance in the US, how fast would he/she receive medical care in a case such as this? Having friends who have lost their jobs over the past few months, I see what they are up against in regards to healthcare services in the US without insurance. The system is so bogged down. So if the government does not intervene for these Americanswho have no ability to pay for private insurance, who will step up to help them?
Even if you have insurance, your insurer may just deny coverage. They'll find something you omitted on your application or just say whatever you want is "experimental" and let you die while appealing their BS.

I have Canadian cousins and I know that what they say in this video is absolutely true. My Canadian cousin had breast cancer and had to come to Detroit for treatment. Her mother was having severe headaches and had to wait months for an appointment.

Single-payer seems to be a stupid idea. I think that's pretty safe to say. But so is total free market health care. Why can't we just have a public option to compete with free market health care? You cannot compete with an entity that does not have to show a profit. Employers will dump their insurance plans to save money which means many people will lose their CHOICE of health coverage. Look at car insurance! You can buy across state lines for the best deals. You can't with health insurance.

I went to doctor because I was having headaches, doctor sends me to ct scan.I waited 3 weeks. There were unclear spot and the doctor send me to mri and I waited under a week for that. I was there yesterday. Oh and I payed for all this 27 €. I live in Finland :)

This is interesting because I'm totally for a national healthcare because I have poor friends that have trouble with paying for healthcare. HOWEVER this is proof on how that system is also inefficient so we need to change our system however I am not so sure national healthcare is the answer. Thanks for the information.

@GeneralHasslehoff There is a non-"government take over" option. Allow medical companies to sell insurance plans across state lines. Currently, this is prevented by the US government. By opening this up many companies can compete and if understand economics quality of care will rise as cost decrease :)

Here's an idea, how about actually curing some of these diseases instead of "treating" them indefinitely, an approach which is going to backfire on the U.S. healthcare system. This IS possible and I know just what needs to be done. If you want to learn how a new healthcare system could work, for REAL, visit my channel. Weird.... Here in BC My wife and I got into an ultrasound within three days of needing one... just to check up on the baby... and yeah, it was still free.
I was there in the waiting room and I started to talk to an old man, he'd been there for an hour and already had his CAT scan... I mean... its all about the area I guess. In my city there's about 50,000 people, but New Market has 80,00 or so... so its not the size of the city that matters. Maybe they should move to BC.

Anyone who wants Obamacare should go to ANY VA facility and just sit for one day with your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open. Those who get care from the VA receive excellent medical care. However, the clerical staff are all civil servants and most come with a builrt-in attitude from hell. How is that any different than an insurance company or HMO? Even at ti's worst, it's BETTER than the nothing that the poor uninsured get right now. The thing that people always leave out of this equation is that it sucks to get sick no matter what kind of insurance/money you have, so the best thing is to not get sick at all. Having the ability to see a doctor regularly and not have to worry about where the payment money is going to come from is the first step in that direction.

Rubbish. Even if treatment cost $100K, many could mortgage a home to pay for it. Private charities could organize themselves to help the indigent.
I personally had a Canadian relative ask me to house a Canadian friend who wanted to come to the US for treatment for leukemia. She died before she could get here, and may have been saved if not for the delays in the Canadian system.
Anecdotal? Possibly, but I hear that about 12,500 Canadians come to the US each year for treatment.

You are right, mortgaging one's home is only an option for the 70% of Americans who are home owners, and most of them already have health insurance.
I have no problem with a taxpayer subsidy to buy poor people health insurance on the free market. This would cover the 20% of people who can not afford health insurance. But I object to throwing the rest of us in to a socialized system that will reduce our choices, be more inefficient, and result in lower quality care like the VA hospitals.

Well im 22 and on the last wednesday of july i was diagnosed with a tumor. this was on my free visit to the doctor. I live an hour from this guy!. I went to the same hospital he would have. St Michaels Hospital in Toronto. In one week i was diagnosed, had surgery and walked out of the hospital. no charge!! I love canadian Healthcare Our Private system is there too. Those dr's are called specialists.

It doesn't go to tax-payers actually. A portion does, which is balanced by the medicaid system that all tax-payers pay into. But it usually doesn't pay the entire bill, a cost the provider absorbs. THIS is what raises the cost of medical care. along with some greed, I'm sure we can all agree. If the government had control over a plan that was more like insurance than Medicaid is that everyone payed into, it would greatly mitigate this cost while providing health care for the currently uninsured.

Just waiting for you to cite a source than states the United States has a superior standard of living. So far you cannot provide a single source that backs that statement up. Perhaps it because over 1/5 of your population live in poverty, or the fact that only 60%+ own their own homes, whereas we beat you in these areas. What is funny and yet sad is that we have charities here where we get to donate to American impovershied areas. America is so rich then why are there so many poor every where?

This is a heartwrenching story. However, if a person has no insurance in the US, how fast would he/she receive medical care in a case such as this? Having friends who have lost their jobs over the past few months, I see what they are up against in regards to healthcare services in the US without insurance. The system is so bogged down. So if the government does not intervene for these Americanswho have no ability to pay for private insurance, who will step up to help them?

Even if you have insurance, your insurer may just deny coverage. They'll find something you omitted on your application or just say whatever you want is "experimental" and let you die while appealing their BS.

How about making insurance more affordable by expanding coverage options across state lines? How about tort reform? How fast do you think your friends would receive healthcare under a system that the GOVERNMENT runs? Every system they run is broke! Why do you think the government has to 'step up' to help? Their pitiful track record is most likely why your friends have lost their jobs.

I mean, in order to make your point, you have to spout incredible BS, so obvious, it undercuts your screed. Fact: There are currently 30-40 million who use the ER for their care, plus tens of millions who are underinsured. The care given to those who have insurance is substandard now. So what's your point? Do you have one?

I have Canadian cousins and I know that what they say in this video is absolutely true. My Canadian cousin had breast cancer and had to come to Detroit for treatment. Her mother was having severe headaches and had to wait months for an appointment.

What a selective view of the Canadian Health System (any conservative influence here?). What in the world does it have to do with America's health care reform? NOTHING!

Why do people think this has anything to do with what is proposed in America. Not only do we not have anything banning someone from paying for an MRI on their own, but we don't even have anything saying you cant have some other insurance than the public OPTION. WTF? So Canada is screwed. Who cares. That's not what is being proposed.

You have no idea what is being proposed! Currently it says you can 'keep your insurance" (gee thanks!)...UNLESS something about that plan has changed...like a fee increase, or change in benefits,then you're automatically put on public option. And employers who carry insurance will more than likely want to discard the burden of fees that will be tacked on and let their employees go to public option. WHERE IS THE CHOICE? Try reading the thousand page document! Congress hasn't.

Single-payer seems to be a stupid idea. I think that's pretty safe to say. But so is total free market health care. Why can't we just have a public option to compete with free market health care? If there are any legitimate reasons why this cannot be, please inform me, because I fail to see anything wrong with it.

You cannot compete with an entity that does not have to show a profit. Employers will dump their insurance plans to save money which means many people will lose their CHOICE of health coverage. You must have an insurance plan by the time this takes place, or you will not have the option to buy one elsewhere and be FORCED to be on the public option. TRUE free market competition works. Look at car insurance! You can buy across state lines for the best deals. You can't with health insurance.

Carmijok1 is spouting slogans, sans-facts. Most employees DON'T have a choice of insurance plans. They are locked into whatever plan their employer provides for them. In many cases this is only one plan. Take it or leave it. You have NO choice. What's more, at any time, for any reason, this superior US healthcare system you are so proud of, could drop your coverage and consider you "uninsurable" at their whim. Wow. And that's how the "Free Market" works? Try buying insurance on your own, moron.

That's NOT the free market. Decouple ins from employment and allow us to buy health ins across state lines and we are a bit closer to a free market.
Then we would have hundreds of insurance choices. More competition would prevent ins cos from charging too much or providing lousy service. But state govts conspire to reduce competition, and create near monopoly situations in each state. Ins cos provide big campaign contributions in thanks.
I have private, non-employer health ins.

Democrats need to get real, and Republicans need to stop this fatalistic attitude about the end of America as we know it and accusing Obama of being a Communist and such. Everybody wants this country to do well, disagreeing on how doesn't make somebody a Communist.
