@bloodmonk74 See the live version SUngha's part cant be heard properly its the nature of the duet. This is rehearsal actually but when don and andy play it was studio recording and you might find it hard to listen to Don's part too.. but i feel that it is important for it to be loud to a certain extent and sungha should reduce the volume of the beats which interferes with andy's tapping.

@hockeyray13 It does give a stronger sound and is very useful if you are speedpicking and fingerpicking in the same song. I didn't much care for it though as it is an entirely different way to play, just have to get used to it I guess. Also if you are to pick with your nails for somewhat the same effect, that too is an entirely different way to play than simply fingerpicking like normal.

@chosentonessournotes Andy said in his website FAQ that he just noodles around in alternate tunings and find whats good to him and make a song up. He doesent even involve theory in his songwriting. But this is where a good ear comes in. to be able to hear whats in your head and make it come out of your instrument.

By the way, Alternate tunings seem to confuse me with theory. You have to relearn ALL the scales. All the modern fingerstyle players seem to have something against standard tuning lol

My music teacher taught me, that it's best that both tabs and notes are on the same sheet so that those who know the notes but have not gotten used to the alternate tuning can play the song. Still standard notation can be flexible if one thinks about it.

@Trcls Thanks. I see alot of top musicians look down on tablature, they seem to think its a cheat way of learning a song. (I can see why, compared to notation). But because all the stuff I play is in alternate tunings, standard notation is going to be much more difficult for me.

I have combined TAB and notation above, but always end up looking at the tab because its easier.

I would also like to know if notation will help train my ear?, because if so, Ill ditch the tabs! I want a better ear.

@MrFaulconbridge Yes notation will help train your ear better. Since it gives you a standard position of where the notes are, no matter what tuning you use. Just like in violin and piano, they are great at sight reading, meaning when they see the note written down, they already know what sound to expect and even the time signature so that their playing is more consistent and precise. I think notation will also benefit guitarists as well. but Tabs must never totally replace notation.
