let's hear some price.... this thing is EXPENSIVE AS HELL...... that's why they didn't say anything about the price. part of engineering is not only the invention itself....but the price of the invention.... it's a great piece of engineering, but it will be even greater if it can be used for the benefit of many people. i hope they find a cheaper method to produce this material.... 100x cheaper :).
There is a vid that outlines it's entire manufacturing process in the lab at very small scale (and very high price). It is actually an extremely simple process using minimal specialized equipment, I can't see how this won't be mainstream within 15 years. I could probably make this in my university's lab (not that I know what I'd do with it). A WAY simpler process than carbon fiber (at least of an real quality), and WAY stronger. It's miraculous.
This stuff is great. I am surprised though that the SEM shows a very chaotic nanostructure of tubuals, instead of the more regular pattern we see in macro woven goods used nowadays for composites. I was thinking since it is engineered, that it would look more like an interesting 'plaid'?
@doceigen no, nano tubes are dispersed in aqueous suspension with Sodium dodecyl Sulfate and are compresed into a thin layer via micro porous vacuum filtration. Its a very simple process really, that is after the nano tubes themselves are synthesized.
Every single video on You Tube has people who just HAVE TO detract what ever is being shown and insult something, in someway. These are the least creative people in our society, proven by the fact that they have NOTHING important to ADD, so they TRY to SUBTRACT. I wish they would just be erased and banned already.
companies like bell can take this and make it into something, wow what a genius im so glad bell exist. let me guess its just like carbon fiber in use today except a whole lot more expensive. Sounds like mr woo has a solution to a problem that doesnt yet exist, maby in 60 years some one will remember this and say hey maby buckypaper will work. Maybe not.
