If you pick up new born's, your scent is on them, a scent that the mother knows isn't her babies scent, a different scene, and because of the scent on her babies, she eats them. I don't know how long you are supposed to leave it until you can touch them, but never touch them when they are just born

They arnt born with quills aka spikes, they surface the skin a few hours after birth. Ive had 2 litters, but i dont play with them till at least a week depending on the temperment of the mother.

I did not actually know this until very last night but hedgehog babies are born with a protective membrane covering their quills, the membrane dries and shrinks in the hours following their birth, when they have been cleaned by their mommy their quills which sit beneath the skin pop out.
