Love this song and Rock Bottom. What a shame to hear that Jo Baker died already. I loved her voice too. Too bad this band wasn't more recognized. The last time I say him was at Slims in SF. He and Boz Scaggs are old friends. Good memories...thanks for sharing.
November 1966 : Jo Baker, a popular Bay Area rock 'n' roll singer, died Monday at Highland Hospital in Oakland after a long bout with liver disease. She was 48 and had been seriously ill for about two years.
In the states I was "jailbait". A man in his twenties caught with an underage girl could mean jailtime. I am sure he was wanting a woman who might be interested in a little action. Still true in many states, esp if the relationship ends in pregnancy. Utah is one of the few states that is lax on this--(go figure). This was in Montana.
I used to hitch into SF to see Elvin Bishop Band in my wild and wasted youth. Wow! What energy and talent! I did love Jo Baker. I don't know the name of the song but the words were "I used to sit on my bed and worry, in the dark hours of the night..."
Love this tune.....Burned a few with Elvin back in the early 70's... DeAnza College, Cupertino CA back in the day... Fond memories.......Was so sorry to hear about his daughters passing a few years back,,,, no parent should ever have to experience losing a child.....
It was seven years before this concert that I was asked to "meet" Elvin backstage in Missoula, MT--my girlfriend and I went--of course! I sat next to him and we talked a lot. Suddenly he looked at me and said, "How old are ya?" "Sixteen"--ABRUPTLY he got up and told his roadies to get us --the ladies-- outta here! LOL! Now that is a musician with some scruples or real fear of the law..... we left--starstruck and completely happy! That time he was not foolin--I remember Jo Baker, Classy!
Is Elvin one of the Marx Brothers? I thought for a second in the beginning that this was one of those corrupted U-Tube vids and this guy on stage was Photoshopped from a Chico Marx image ?!?! But Chico was great on the piano. Seriously though folks, Elvin has great stage presence. -M 2010
Cool. A phase shifter. I thought it must've been either a flanger or phaser or combination of chorus and flanger. Never thought it'd be a phase shifter. I'll have to go try one now. You wouldn't happen to know the opening chords he uses? lol Thanks. Keep them weeds growing (ear hairs). They got a cure for that too, "just turn the music on and let it soothe you"
@musicfox28 That's a flanger. It splits the signal into two and delays one. It was the first effect that was popular as a stomp box after wah & distortion had been around a while. Very different and exciting for the time. Chorusing was a refinement of the basic idea. Flanging got its name because the original manual way to do it is send one signal to tape and press your thumb against the flange of the tape reel to slow it thereby delaying and it then combining it with the dry signal.
@musicfox28 That's a flanger. Very new and exciting for its time. A little orange box. The first popular stomp box after wah & distortion had been around a while. It splits the signal into two and delays one. Chorusing was a refinement of the concept. It's name comes from the original manual way to do it. You split the signal, send it to a tape machine, drag your thumb against the flange of the tape reel to slow it a little, causing the delay, and mix it back with the dry signal.
@musicfox28 Fuck me, I'm wrong. It's a phase shifter. I'm such an ass. I was there for chrissake! What I said about the first new stomp box was right, tho, except it was the phase shifter, not flanger. Flanger boxes came later & then chorus effects. Brain cells are falling out my ears. That's why you start to grow hair in your ear holes as you get older-to help keep the brain cells octagon mairgold hi mom, batteries. I want some eggs. Do you have my medicine?
One of the most under rated musicians to come out of the 60's. Greatest guy in the world. Some of the guys in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and Elvin isn't one of them . It's a crime. Seen him jam with the best and put them to shame, including Hendrix, Clapton, Steve Miller , Alvin Lee. Need I go on . Whats he got to do die.
Elvin Bishop is one cool act, saw him in te late 70"s at the uptown theater in Kansas City, He opened for reo-speedwagon and had Micky Thomas with him at the time (KILLER SHOW) Elvin! call Frank Hicks at Knuckleheads and book a show! come back to KC, brother
Elvin is such a rare gem in that he can play blues, country, R&B, rock, whatever moves him. More versatile than Eric Clapton and probably a better band leader too, I think.
It does make cold chills run thru ya. The warmest guy I ever had the pleasure to see. And dont forget the background singers, theres a whole choir there even if its just four voices.
I think this video is awesome. I remember him , he played at the fillmore east!
PLEASE go to my favs and click on SUBURBAN GUY ROCKIN OUT
he doesnt read music, really feels what he plays and improvises his songs as he goes along. the other 2 favs are him also ARIEL (awesome shredding) and ARIEL SIMANTOV (awesome sweeping) pls view comment and rate them as we think he deserves recognition .thanks everyone!
You're thinking of Jo Baker and she was more than a background vocalist. She actually sang lead for Elvin back in the 70's. I hung with them for a while and she was one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, plus an amazing vocalist. There is a Bishop video that features her on youtube.

Awesome vid. Does anybody know what pedal or what effect that is that he's using for this song? I just can seem to figure it out.

Whatever happened to Jo Baker? She was one of the most amazing singers I ever saw. Rock My Soul is still one of my all-time favorite albums.
Thank You for posting, MoondogMayne! You've brought back some great memories.
