I don't quite see what all of the fuss is about. The fact of the matter is that when hens are stressed, malnourished or unhealthy they don't actually lay eggs, which is counterproductive to the farmer's intentions in the first place. These hens look fine to me and I will continue to happily purchase and consume their eggs.
@pougate How can you say that? They have no room to move, their cages are less than a sheet of A4 paper, meaning they can never stretch their wings and are cramped through their whole lives. They live in artificial sunlight which is always on, how is that healthy? How you can 'happily purchase' eggs like these is disgusting. When they hatch some of the eggs if they are male, they get sent to be slaughtered. They go on a conveyor belt to their DEATH. Buy free range, help stop this monstrosity!
@pougate Did you see the bald patches on these hens?! this usually means they are UNHEALTHY and overcrowded, right now i have my three hens running about happily in the cold british weather and rain and they look 100% better than these poor birds do, even when a hen is unhealthy it keeps laying eggs (although they look a horribily pale yellow) ! eggs aren't there because we feed them and keep them healthy, the eggs are the hens babies in an unfertilised package!

Regarding their eggs, you are correct in that the eggs are unfertilised and that production of these eggs is part of the bird's ovulatory cycle. However, like humans and most other animals, when stressed or unhealthy they will not ovulate, hence, unhealthy hens won't produce eggs.
Say no to eggs. Make a difference. Remember if consumer demand is lowered, then these farms can be wiped out. Just think next time you eat an egg: it is full of cholestral and saturated fat. The chicken will thank you for not eating that egg.

Well people - I eat chicken myself - loads of it - but it's our choice - Cheap, mass produced KFC Style chicken or More expensive less - often - consumed free range chicken - our choice. Any way the farmer gets next to nothing for his hard work - big supermarkets get the bulk of the profits - or rather the shareholders do - I'm sure it's a similar story with cattle :(
God! It's as if someone dreamed up the worst possible way of rearing poultry, made it into a reality and everyone else followed suit. When I buy eggs, I make sure they're free range, but I went into a Carrefour in Madrid recently, and ALL the boxes said 'de gallinas criadas en jaulas' (eggs from caged hens). I didn't even have the OPTION of free-range eggs! I have to pay a significantly higher price, and also realise that 'free range' doesn't mean 'not cruel' at all :-(
we can blame the supermarkets for not paying enough money to the farmers. most farmers want to give a good happy life to their hens. but the supermarkets are taking all the profits.
the average farmer gets paid something horrendous like 30p per chicken. probably even less. you do the math. the average chicken breast in a supermarket is like, what ? £2.00 for the nasty stuff? .....
just make sure you buy the RSPCA stuff. or even better, none at all!

I rescued x3 Ex Battery hens from The Battery Hen Welfare Trust a few months ago, we have alway perchased free range eggs and Organic meat, but when I saw a video like this one and saw the conditions these girls were forced to live it I was outraged!!!

Allright , so i will agree with you guys on the space. We do have free range hens.. They are outside About 12 hours a day ! And yes, i really mean outside ! I did get upset with a battery cage farmer the other day , at a farm meeting we had... HE looked at me and said " The rougher the filty son-of-a-bitches look, the better they lay ! " I just cant take that. But as far as i can see the chickens are fine in this video !

I'm not sure why you would think farmers are heartless money grabbers, but they look out for their animals because this is their livelihood; poor conditions (including leaving dead animals in cages) can decrease layer performance and determine whether or not there will be a meal on the dinner table at night.

Thats just plain CRUEL. I keep 2 chickens and we r thinking about getting a rescued battery hen. Intensive farming is horrible. How would anyone feel to be squashed in a wire cage with the floor only the size of an A4 piece of paper with your claws growing uncomftably long with your feathers all falling out AND being nearly forced to lay eggs day in day out? Its not fair!!

It's our fault, not the farmers. If there was more demand for free range eggs they could change to a free range farm- I'm sure they'd love to! But if there is no demand for the product, they won't be able to live.
This is terrible. I am a vegetarian and dont believe in animals being bred just so we can eat them, but Im not naive to think that only I can stop it.....but I believe that they should be in better conditions. Those poor birds....I always buy Free Range eggs, but this has just reinforced the issue and how much we need to ensure that it doesnt keep happening.

If you don't want to buy the eggs that come from the battery hens, look for those labels!
I think by 2012 those types of cages will be outlawed.the newer ones will have slightly more room,a small perch and something for the birds to scratch and peck at.

I rescued 7 chickens who looked exactly like this when I first got them, now they have regrown all their feathers, and they all come running when they see me, i payed 3.50 each for them and it is all worth it, cause i know how they were treated in these horrible, dark places, where they die a horrible and painful death... Go vegetarianism!!! And vegans!!!

Well people - I eat chicken myself - loads of it - but it's our choice - Cheap, mass produced KFC Style chicken or More expensive less - often - consumed free range chicken - our choice. Any way the farmer gets next to nothing for his hard work - big supermarkets get the bulk of the profits - or rather the shareholders do - I'm sure it's a similar story with cattle :(

God! It's as if someone dreamed up the worst possible way of rearing poultry, made it into a reality and everyone else followed suit. When I buy eggs, I make sure they're free range, but I went into a Carrefour in Madrid recently, and ALL the boxes said 'de gallinas criadas en jaulas' (eggs from caged hens). I didn't even have the OPTION of free-range eggs! I have to pay a significantly higher price, and also realise that 'free range' doesn't mean 'not cruel' at all :-(

we can blame the supermarkets for not paying enough money to the farmers. most farmers want to give a good happy life to their hens. but the supermarkets are taking all the profits.
the average farmer gets paid something horrendous like 30p per chicken. probably even less. you do the math. the average chicken breast in a supermarket is like, what ? £2.00 for the nasty stuff? .....
just make sure you buy the RSPCA stuff. or even better, none at all!

This is absolutely disgusting . Those poor hens living in such small and stressful environments with no freedom. its unnatural. Its inhumane to what this people are doing. We ourselves have saved four battery chickens and they were great! In my opinion they taste better also.
Theres nothing natural to having animals that are meant to walk and breathe fresh air. I completely agree the Veganbutterfly

I have a backyard flock. Five sex links. They have a run, and are let loose around the bushes and yard. They are very friendly. We get five, big brown eggs a day.

I rescued x3 Ex Battery hens from The Battery Hen Welfare Trust a few months ago, we have alway perchased free range eggs and Organic meat, but when I saw a video like this one and saw the conditions these girls were forced to live it I was outraged!!!
What gives a human the right to treat hens or any other animals like this all for money! It makes me so cross!!!
Why don't we put the farmers and buyers of these eggs into the same conditions and see how long they could bare it!!!

Dont be so extreme!We have a flock of free range hens and we bend over backwards to make them happy!This video makes me so sad to see and you cant compare free range hens to battery hens.Ours hens fly, have chicks and eat well. They are protected from predators and have a comfortable nest every night and in return, we eat their eggs which would otherwise go to waste.When they are too old to lay eggs, they enjoy a nice retirement!All unlike these hens.Don't be so foolish please!

It's also natural to rape, steal, abuse/kill children, cannibalize, and abandon the weak, disabled, or elderly. But we have chose to evolve into a more civilized society that it supposed to value treating others as we would want to be treated, regardless of if nature is barbaric.
It would be natural for me to break into my neighbour's home and steal his food.

Allright , so i will agree with you guys on the space. We do have free range hens.. They are outside About 12 hours a day ! And yes, i really mean outside ! I did get upset with a battery cage farmer the other day , at a farm meeting we had... HE looked at me and said " The rougher the filty son-of-a-bitches look, the better they lay ! " I just cant take that. But as far as i can see the chickens are fine in this video !

Jesus if you think they are healthy think again!!! How would you like to live your life in a cage with no sunlight and no dirt to scratch in??? Many of them are covered in parasites, the ones that die are either just left there or ground up and mixed with the chicken meal the other chickens eat. WHAT IS GOOD HERE???? Nothing! This is awful.

I'm not sure why you would think farmers are heartless money grabbers, but they look out for their animals because this is their livelihood; poor conditions (including leaving dead animals in cages) can decrease layer performance and determine whether or not there will be a meal on the dinner table at night.

I think you need to watch this video again. A genuine farmer will care for the animals because they are trying to just earn a living and survive, but the commercial farmers don't give a lick about the chickens.

but they do get worse.
These hens can still peck and dont have their beaks hacked off.
and they havnt made nests out of the dead bodies of other chickens

Thats just plain CRUEL. I keep 2 chickens and we r thinking about getting a rescued battery hen. Intensive farming is horrible. How would anyone feel to be squashed in a wire cage with the floor only the size of an A4 piece of paper with your claws growing uncomftably long with your feathers all falling out AND being nearly forced to lay eggs day in day out? Its not fair!!

It's our fault, not the farmers. If there was more demand for free range eggs they could change to a free range farm- I'm sure they'd love to! But if there is no demand for the product, they won't be able to live.

This is terrible. I am a vegetarian and dont believe in animals being bred just so we can eat them, but Im not naive to think that only I can stop it.....but I believe that they should be in better conditions. Those poor birds....I always buy Free Range eggs, but this has just reinforced the issue and how much we need to ensure that it doesnt keep happening.

Ew, that dead one! Poor thing! The other chickens' eggs probably touched the corpse, and somehow these Battery Hen Farms can say on their labels, "Fresh!" Poor things. I rarely eat chicken and I gave my sister crap for grabbing the eggs that don't say "Free Run" or "Free Range" or "Organic". If you don't want to buy the eggs that come from the battery hens, look for those labels!

I think by 2012 those types of cages will be outlawed.the newer ones will have slightly more room,a small perch and something for the birds to scratch and peck at.

yes, you are right. However, this new "ban" will do nothing. It will simply wash the problem from the publics' mind. They do not have enough space! Chickens are outdoor creatures - not cage creatures. And a bit of astroturf is NOT a subsitute for a dust-bath

I rescued 7 chickens who looked exactly like this when I first got them, now they have regrown all their feathers, and they all come running when they see me, i payed 3.50 each for them and it is all worth it, cause i know how they were treated in these horrible, dark places, where they die a horrible and painful death... Go vegetarianism!!! And vegans!!!

only one way is to stop sooking eat nothing with eggs in it or takeaway buy organic free range bu t its to expensive and its a cheap meal egg is so versitile youd virtual have to go vegan to stop this if not dont cry cause its a natural cycle. as the world expands more demand for food this is the only cheap way of doing it so think next time you are enjoying a muffin its from these chooks i know u dont want to buts its the truth!
