I'm glad I know who is responsible for this nice piece of work. Good ole Ed Zerati. Thanks for your contribution. Folks, here is the man who brought the Beatles to the world. ED ZERATI!
great find - nice cover of classic by The Isley Brothers - includes Pete Best, original drummer, canned for being too popular, got more fan mail than the other blokes, but way better drummer than Ringo, who Paul had to cover for in the studio from time to time - have to admit, still like the Isley's version better - also found Top Notes - songwriters: Bert Russell, Phil Medley - nobody cares about composers
@ALDancers Delusional? George and Paul said in interviews that they needed a good drummer and Pete Best did not cut it, they all asked Brian to fire him, and it was George I believe who asked Ringo to be a drummer for them and they all liked him and said he filled the hole and made the 4 the Beatles. Did they all lie over and over? Doubt it.
Bunch of ignorant youtubers goes to show you. Given the chance to watch a video from the beatles & appreciate it instead, they focus on the name on the screen of the guy who uploaded it. I loved the video btw
That voice! That fucking voice!! They didn't even write this one and yet you'll never hear another version that comes close to the magnatude of this! Did i mention Lennon's voice? Ok. Merry christmas then.
Wow! We are indebted to the late Ed Zerati (surely he must be dead by now?). Hope he got the cred he deserves when The Beatles Anthology aired on international TV!
When I was in the U.S. Navy, I saw The Beatles in Hamburg, Germany, and then again in 1963 in Liverpool. This vid was indeed 1963. And...my last name is McCartney. M. P. McCartney. I am now 66, play guitar, left handed, but...can't sing a lick. :D)
@coyotesong Yes...the kids went wild! Beatlemania was not in full swing, but most of the German kids back then knew who they were. I saw them at the The Star Club, and the place was packed! They had improved a 1000 percent from their beginnings. A year later, when I saw them again in '63 in Liverpool, they were just months away from becoming a household name in the U.S. I was at sea when they played live on the Ed Sullivan show in New York City February 1964 else I would have been there. :)
This CANNOT be a video/film of The Beatles from 1962. Ringo is playing his trademark Black Oyster Pearl Ludwig drumkit with The Beatles drumhead logo, which as any Beatles Hair Splitting Society member knows, he did not buy until 1963 from Drum City in London. QED! You right whack!
By ed zerati? did you have anything to do with the making of this classic video? no, thought not, you just posted it on you tube. well done. what do you want, a medal. maybe next time you can make your name a bit bigger, maybe have it in the middle of the screen
@DeJarreVu - Ah, nice song. Don't be to hard on the poster. Brazilans can't help help how they are. They have always been such pirates of art and intellectual property.
@MAGNETGRUNT (ps- "to" in this case is spelled too.) Good humor though, it really is ridiculous that this guy put his name up there so prominently. He probably wasn't even born when this was filmed!
Buenisimo indeed! I think it's so great that these four "scousers" have such a unifying influence, from Spanish speaking countries to the former Soviet Union to little isolated towns in Appalachia like where I grew up. Enormous talent and energy and they didn't even have to take their shirts off and wear head bands!
I can understand the frustration of the detailed inaccuracy, but I've also read so many extremely incorrect comments about the year, about John playing lead on Nowhere Man, and just so many ridiculous remarks from people who weren't born then, or people who just don't think about what they say. I've never left a negative comment so I will just say thanks for posting this. It defines rock and roll!
No offense but all this arguing reminds me of listening to my 4 year niece and 5 year old nephew fighting. Can't we compromise and just say it was from the early 60's. I'm all for nailing down the facts of an old Beatles performance but enough is enough. By the way, great performance by the boys. Thanks for posting.
This is from their appearance on the TV show "Scene at 6:30" on August 14, 1963. Twist and Shout would not be recorded until February 11, 1963. It was included on the album Please Please Me, which was released in the UK on March 22, 1963.
This is the 1968 rehearsal before the premiere of Yellowed Submarine. Having taken a month off after their first European tour, John suggested they get together and come up with fresh material to play at the premiere. He and Rings came up with the idea of Twist and Shout from all the shouting they did as young boys growing up in the Merseyland neighborhood. This was Rings most prolific writing period.
are you a fucking retard. twist and shout was writen by medley and russel and this is before 65 cos look at their hair is started short and ended long dickface
@wjbn5 please refrain from refering to people that you have a disagreement with as retard - asshole or putz or jerkoff is far more accurate - thank you -Beatles Rock
anyone that suggests this is late 64 or early 65 has never seen pictures of the beatles. it's 1963, and their guitars give it away. john lennon is playing his first rickenbacker 325, with the gold pickguard and the bigsby.
He's not taking credit for the footage. He's taking credit for getting the year wrong and mistakenly driving many people to this video who otherwise would not have clicked on it. And I think Ed is from Africa, as his writing style sounds like those advance-fee fraud emails I get from Nigeria.

Thanks. At the time I had no idea John was playing the lead. It has always been one of my fave lead breaks. Never knew John was such a good lead guitar.
Thanks. John also did the solo on the German Concert 1966 for 'Nowhere Man'--you can see him cranking up his volume just before the solo starts..George did the solo on the Japan Concert clip and others. Not sure why they did that, but it is nice.

People today look at videos from the 60s thinking it is lipsync and not recordings. Back then the sound crew hung mikes from the ceiling out of view of the camera.
If this was recorded and performed live without overdubs, what are the guitars plugged into? Hmmmmm?????? Notice there are no patch cords leading out of their guitars, and wireless transmitters weren't invented untill the late 1970's.
Yep, this is most DEFINITELY 1963 - On promo from the Please Please Me album, which was released in '63...... in '62 the guys had yet to sign with EMI, and they didn't record Twist and Shout untill they recorded the Please Please Me album.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They look like a bunch of beatnick virgins that they were--well at least in front of a camera. I can understand why OASIS was so inspired by them. In fact, the lead singer looks like George. Unfortunately when they finished the Beatle covers, George didn't mix words, he straight out called them "trite" . Needless to say George was in a verbal feud w/ OASIS and of course the critics agreed w/George and panned the album.
This film was made in the fall of 63 and for you own bit of historical info, Ringo didn't officially join them until the fall of 62 and actually right before they recorded Love Me Do on September 11, 1962.
wtf? Twist and Shout was written by Medley & Russell and was released by the Isley Bros in 1962 (UK Stateside SS112) as a follow up to their 1959 hit Shout (UK RCA 1149)
a friend of mine really admired the 'originality' of the Beatles, so i went thru my record collection and made up a tape of about 30 tracks by the original artists of songs that the Beatles played in their early days (including all 12 cover tracks on their first 2 albums + numbers they performed on Saturday Club etc)
The Beatles' early music was mostly covers. The double CD "Star Club Tapes" only seems to have one song written by The Beatles, as far as I can tell. The BBC recordings double CD was again mostly covers. They're also listed as covering some of Jackie Lee's songs (such as White Horses) but I can't find any recordings of those. They probably did some other original stuff early on - the Quarrymen can't have played only covers - but they only hit their pace with Hard Day's Night.
ww2 ours communication was better than Germany now it's 1960 and we will test market this generation of young boys with gitars and attitude right thru Germany . of course the germans hate the beatles
Germany was the Beatles together. the boys played all night in slum bars just to get it tight na the beatles started in Germany, believe that Seriously in like 1960 15 years after ww2 the Germans are impressed by a bunch of punks from England toting gitars ?
Quick add: The song, mimed here, was recorded in the famous Feb. 11, 1963 session at EMI -- where the boys recorded their debut album, "Please Please Me," in one day, 585 minutes to be precise. The recording of "Twist And Shout" concluded the session.
The exact date is Aug. 14, 1963. The Beatles were appearing on a show called "Scene At 6:30." This was recorded at the Granada TV Centre in Manchester.
Yes this is from 63 I'm sure. The earliest on record I know of is "Some Other Guy" which might be '62 at the Cavern Club after they did Hamburg for the second or third time. Yayyy, I'm a Beatle-geek, LOL

To answer the question of when this was filmed, identify the drummer. The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan in February of 1963 and Ringo was the drummer.

1962?????
This film was made in the fall of 63 and for you own bit of historical info, Ringo didn't officially join them until the fall of 62 and actually right before they recorded Love Me Do on September 11, 1962.

I was gonna say! I didn't think they'd even written Twist & Shout yet. I mean John does 22 but I suppose he would've been.
God Julian was born in 1962! John was only 22! Look at John, he looks real young to be a dad! But I love that John Lennon!
BEATLESCRAZY13 3 years ago
wtf? Twist and Shout was written by Medley & Russell and was released by the Isley Bros in 1962 (UK Stateside SS112) as a follow up to their 1959 hit Shout (UK RCA 1149)
a friend of mine really admired the 'originality' of the Beatles, so i went thru my record collection and made up a tape of about 30 tracks by the original artists of songs that the Beatles played in their early days (including all 12 cover tracks on their first 2 albums + numbers they performed on Saturday Club etc)
utzuckz 2 years ago 2
The Beatles' early music was mostly covers. The double CD "Star Club Tapes" only seems to have one song written by The Beatles, as far as I can tell. The BBC recordings double CD was again mostly covers. They're also listed as covering some of Jackie Lee's songs (such as White Horses) but I can't find any recordings of those. They probably did some other original stuff early on - the Quarrymen can't have played only covers - but they only hit their pace with Hard Day's Night.
fishcat42 2 years ago
The Quarrymen did play mostly covers, in those days it was rare for an artist to write his (or her) own songs anyway.
They did start their writing together, but rarely performed the songs. Of course there are exeptions, "In spite of all the danger" being one of them.

ww2 ours communication was better than Germany now it's 1960 and we will test market this generation of young boys with gitars and attitude right thru Germany . of course the germans hate the beatles
onewayinn 3 years ago
Germany was the Beatles together. the boys played all night in slum bars just to get it tight na the beatles started in Germany, believe that Seriously in like 1960 15 years after ww2 the Germans are impressed by a bunch of punks from England toting gitars ?

It's rather 1963 than 1962, you can see it from their hair.
timotastic 3 years ago
Quick add: The song, mimed here, was recorded in the famous Feb. 11, 1963 session at EMI -- where the boys recorded their debut album, "Please Please Me," in one day, 585 minutes to be precise. The recording of "Twist And Shout" concluded the session.
laretrac 3 years ago
The exact date is Aug. 14, 1963. The Beatles were appearing on a show called "Scene At 6:30." This was recorded at the Granada TV Centre in Manchester.

Yes this is from 63 I'm sure. The earliest on record I know of is "Some Other Guy" which might be '62 at the Cavern Club after they did Hamburg for the second or third time. Yayyy, I'm a Beatle-geek, LOL
