Yes this is the one and only La-9 flying in the world . I saw this beautiful aircraft at Wanaka NZ at Easter 2008. Along with the Hawker Fury/Seafury series these were among the last piston engined fighters in production. The jets had taken over.
The advice not to attack russian fighters below 5 000 m referred to the Jak3, not the La7. When Koshedub was in action, the Soviet planes already outnumbered the few Luftwaffe fighter groups by far.
@stomatophylax The interesting fact in the end of war Koshedub on Lа-7 has had time to bring down two planes R-51 (an authentic victory) and three more American planes
The russian's really made some great planes in ww2, I've always heard the optics were poor on them however, allowing German pilots to maintain the edge. I remember Erich Hartmann(350+kills) said that he was more afraid of fighting russians in American planes, even though they were inferior. The superior American optics meant they had a better chance of shooting him down.
It is actually La-9. This is the only airworthy Lavochkin in the world! Although quite similar externally to the La-7, this is, in fact , an entirely new aircraft. It is an all-metal construction with a laminar-flow wing, as opposed to a previous wooden Lavochkins.
Ive said it many times the La-7 was probably the best dogfighter of WWII below 7k. This amazing aircraft was fast, had a high rate of climb, superior roll rate. Not to mention all of which is behind a radial engine. It wasnt perfect. The 3 20mm's only had 450 rounds I think, power dropped quickly with altitude, and range wasnt the greatest. Other aircraft may have gotten more glory, but this powerfull little girl was an engineering marvel.
@jtflyer indeed, glory to the herous of the great patriottic war...
thank u all , we ll never forget our allies ..

What's with the weird music? Nice looking plane though. I can never decide whether the Yak or the Lavochkin were my favorite VVS fighters! Although the I-15 and I-16 have a special place in my heart, just for being so cool. ;)
It is a Lavochkin La-9. Only airworthy example in the world. Previously owned and operated by the Old Flying Machine Company at Duxford, U.K. Now based in New Zealand it is soon to head off to Jerry Yagen's fighter factory in the U.S.A.
Anyone have contact with employees at Lavochkin? I'm looking for old friends from that company, who worked at a museum exhibit back in 1991-1992 in Fort Worth, TX, USA.
@bevanid Making it even more special. All this arguing in the comments section of any warbird. It can do this, no your full of shit, it can't do that. Big deal. They all have their place, regardless of country. None of them were perfect by a long shot.
Facts speak for themselves. All fighter pilots deserve respect and gratitude for their service. Highest scoring US ace was Dick Bong=40 planes. It's not the airplane- it's the pilot. Bad pilot in a good airplane will lose to the good pilot in a bad plane. It's like anything. Not what, but HOW! German pilots amassed huge scores- Erich Hartman 352. But they started early in war when Russian airplanes were still not advances. Erich crash landed 14 times! He claims he wasn't shot down. Aha...sure
Russian planes were not as refined as the US planes but YAK 3 and LA-5 and La-7 were better for other reasons. Easy to build and maintain. Both had tighter turning radious of any other fighter of WWII. LA-7 took only 19 seconds to make a 360 degree turn. German pilots were advised not to engage Russian aircraft below 5,000 meters. Highest scoring Russian ace Kozhedub had 62 victories. 14 of them were in La-7. He was never wounded or shot down and never used his parachute.
@AtomicShield The real score was more 100 wins. They didn't score "group fight' where he actually took down an enemy but scored his wingman in order to encourage the rookie.
Actually the Yak 3 was the best, it was faster, more maneuverable, and longer range. A lot of people know about the La-7 from a PC game called the IL-2 Sturmovik, its funny because the Yak 3 is also in the game and is clearly superior.
@GerbilEssences Both the La-7 and the Yak-3 were not known to absorb damage, they were both lightly built, as stated before the Yak-3 was the premier fighter.
But the Yak was pretty lightly built in comparison, no? I recall it being a much less armoured plane than Yak-1 and 9. When you have manouvrability like that it probably didn't matter though.
@GerbilEssences Again, as stated already, both the Yak-3 and La-7 were both very lightly constructed and armored and would suffer structural failure due to there limited over speed and wing loading characteristics. The Yak-3 was superior on almost every account, even some prototypes reaching speeds in excess of 460 mph. Remember were talking about Soviet aircraft, most lacked high altitude performance making them extremely vulnerable to Me 109s.
This is La-9 (Not La-7!) La-9 was a post-war Lavichkin fighter. It is externally similar to La-7, but is all-metal with much better instrumentation and much greater firepower (4*23mm synchronous NS-23 cannons).
Apparently it is the most heavily armed single-engine piston fighter!

Well American planes in the game are.. well a lot worse than they were in real life.
I knew a real P-51 pilot(who is dead now) he tried flying in the game at a low altitude and high altitude. I asked him if it was "accurate"? He laughed and said " know way kid, not even close". Also the game implies that the Russians single handed defeated Germany. It never thanks the U.S. . I don't think that the Russian planes are as good as modelled in the game. I am not biased I just want the facts.
@TheRealHawkeye Say that models are inaccurate to the Oleg Maddox, the project creator. He'll drown you in proofs that everything is accurate as possible on a PC.
Also, not Russia, but USSR defeated Nazis. Single handed, as US were busy at Pacific, but Lend-Lease helped. Not so much as a second front would help, but substantially.
Seeing that your from Russia, your comments are honestly going to be biased. Who is going to know more about fighter planes a game designer or a veteran fighter pilot. Facts are facts, the nazi's wiped out the Russian's in the hundreds if not the thousands.
@TheRealHawkeye Heh! My own comments are nothing to do with Oleg Maddox's proofs. His team worked over flight models along with hundreds of real pilots, who flew warbirds and fly originals and replicas now. He made several flights on P-51D himself. Tell him your opinion and he'll demand the documents and real proofs or he'll make you to take your words back. :)
The russian virtual pilots know his way of arguing well and call it "WDER" (We Did Everything Right). :)
@TheRealHawkeye About nazis - the total military losses was just 1:1,3. Eight millions of german soldiers and nine millions of soviet ones. Plus twelve millions of civilians. Nazis were very effective against civilians.
@VirpilTV I am done argueing with you, for you are talking about something you have no idea about. Your saying opinions not facts. According to all three past high school history books, Germany's military losses were 7.5 million. Russia's were 11.5 million. Russia only went against Germany, Germany went against the world. America and Britian killed by far more German solders than Russia did. As for the game, I do not believe what you said, there is no such thing as a perfect simulator. Cheers:)
@TheRealHawkeye Beyond your school history books there are some scientific studies, based on archive documents, not on estimations. Try to find, for instance, Krivosheev's studies. It's in Russian, so you'll have to learn it a bit, just to understand military terms and acronyms.
Or you may choose to believe your school books, it's no matter for me. You're free to believe in anything you like. :)
For the sim, it does not need your belief. :) It is widely used for pilots' primary training.
Maybe I am not done... This is so much fun arguing.
With the P-51D The pilot I mentioned earlier took off, flew his plane for 30 seconds at full speed, and then went a mile and a half straight up finishing with a loop. Can you do that in IL2? No. Are all the planes accurate? Lerche? I-250? BI-6? Huckebein? He-162C or D? and who trains with this? The russian air force?:)
@TheRealHawkeye I won't argue with you on this matter. I don't fly P-51 in "IL-2", my plane is IL-2 itself. Also I have no real life experience with P-51. Tell your opinion to the one who flew both real and simulated P-51 and fond of this aircraft - to Oleg Maddox. He has the power to correct the incorrect. Argue with him, not with me.
Yeah, but the plane was too far away to hear the engine and the sound was marred by music from loudspeakers directly over my head.
The engine sound you're hearing is actually not from the Lavochkin, but rather from other passing planes. The sound of the Lavochkin engines can be heard ever so slightly when it's near the end of the taxi circuit.
cant you read? your so stupid my name is "Vasiliy" not vaseline it looks like americans cant read and are you saying that after you guys are done with Iraq and Afghanistan you guys are goin to defeat "Russia"? haha good night pal keep dreaming cuz you guys could not even defeat vietnam and would never defeat OSAMA BINLADEN cuz you guys are shit fucking bastards!
Comrade Vaseline-I will make an American "capitalist" pig out of your countrymen yet! We will bring the "disease" called "FREEDOM"..believe me it is quite contagious!
look dude RUSSIA has more FREEDOM than america cuz you guys kill children at Iraq,Afghanistan and many other places but russia doesnt it looks like a little 11 year old russian boy (which is me) is smarter than an american dumb pig like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
humor is ok in Russia too! cuz its a free country you are so unmature and stupid Russia actually has more freedom than america so this is the deal Tommy give up and admit the true that russia is better than america your just to mad that im right and you are wrong and someday youlle get so mad that you will kill yourself and a couple of weeks ago a man from the USA killed his own friends 12 AMERICAN soldiers died so shut up you pig
Saw it at it's first flight in NZ at Ardmore. The P51 and La were side by side coming along the strip at about 200 knots and they both firewalled it - the La just left the 'stang for dead! Quite spectacular!
Top speed probably about the same..about 420-430 mph at altitude, but the La is smaller, lighter and more powerful - hence accelerates and climbs better. The P51H would probably give it a run for it's money, though.
This is the LA-9 which is currently the only flying LA-9 in the world. It is stationed in New Zealand at Wananka. It is currently wearing the Breitling fighter Logo on the cowl, and is in Russian livery. It was previously in Chinese markings when at the Old Flying Machine Company in UK.

I'd rather hear the engine instead of the IL2 music :(

Very nice with one of the best (and most beautifull :] ) russian World War II fighter with nice music from the best IL-2 Sturmovik simulator. :)

It is - out drags a P51 easily - left it for dead!

hahaha fighter drag racing LOL
phonix032 2 years ago
Saw it at it's first flight in NZ at Ardmore. The P51 and La were side by side coming along the strip at about 200 knots and they both firewalled it - the La just left the 'stang for dead! Quite spectacular!
spercepolnes21 2 years ago
impressive though it can be different in the air do u know both planes top speed in the air?
phonix032 2 years ago
Top speed probably about the same..about 420-430 mph at altitude, but the La is smaller, lighter and more powerful - hence accelerates and climbs better. The P51H would probably give it a run for it's money, though.

smart man sperce id still ride in a 51 im a american of course LOL

This is the LA-9 which is currently the only flying LA-9 in the world. It is stationed in New Zealand at Wananka. It is currently wearing the Breitling fighter Logo on the cowl, and is in Russian livery. It was previously in Chinese markings when at the Old Flying Machine Company in UK.

Is it, or isn't it a Lavochkin?
knightsafc2 3 years ago
It definately is! A late model (9 or 11) because of the altered shape of fin, and the 4 cannons ;)
