the reason why that the lakers didnt win the finals in 2004 because the team was old kinda the same roster but with the additions of gary payton and karl malone but injuries hit them hard, kobe and shaq fued, kobe bryant case and the detriot pistons had more athleticism, defense, younger players and great players. but hey detroit played harder than LA

i think if the lakers werent as old and if they had a couple young guys to give them a boost they would have won i mean you're not gonna get it done when kobe and shaq are the only ones in double figures.  ill give the pistons credit they are a great defensive team but the lakers are used to that (raped san antonio in 2001). i think they just needed more firepower

At the time I was upset the Lakers lost this series. But the Pistons were the better team. As a Laker fan its been an incredible decade 7 Finals appearances and 5 NBA titles and they have a shot at a 3 peat this season a lot franchises would dream of that kind of success.

Bottom Line: The Lakers lost because the Pistons were the better team. Not because "it wasn't meant to be", or "their roster was flawed". Yeah I guess their roster was flawed, meaning their team was worse.

It is wrong to say the Lakers "should have won this series". The reason they didn't win it is because they were up against a superior defensive team (With the addition of Rasheed Wallace they eventually became one of the best defensive teams in NBA history in my opinion.) Also the fact that the Pistons had offensive weapons from many different players including some players on the bench. Not just 2 or 3. Pistons were the younger, more athletic and just better team.

@DepressedYoungMan Lakers were a much better team. They just didn't like each other. Watch as Kobe celebrates at the end of the game and how he sees Karl Malone and looks off. And how Shaq doesn't celebrate neither when Kobe hits the game winner nor at the end of the game. It was deeper than basketball. Malone was rumored to be trying to hit on Kobe's wife and Kobe told police during his rape case that Shaq was doing the same thing and Shaq would eventually get a divorce.They hated each other

@jonnyrisas exactly, the Lakers should have won this series, they had Gary Payton and Karl Malone even though they were washed up, it doesn't matter. They had too much talent which is why Shaq and Kobe split up....its a shame otherwise they would have stayed on the same team.
