Bill Meirer is real, heavily attacked by naysayers because it was such a good case. The better the case, the heavier the attack. Who says he faked photos, I'm sure he didn't say that. Probably planted. Not only that, most of his stuff was stolen, he wasn't keeping things under lock and key. It's easy to screw someone up and make them look bad, all you have to do is send in a disinformation specialist, Billy was a piece of cake to discredit, he trusted people.
